Let’s Explore and Discover

Unlocking of Difficulties

Search engine is a specialized website that searches for information across the Internet.

Introduction to searching online

The ability to search for information online is one of the most important digital literacy
skills you can possess. It allows you to quickly find what you're looking for without having to
sift through pages of irrelevant results.

The most important tool in this process is the search engine, which is a specialized
website that searches for information across the Internet. You've probably heard of the most
popular ones, including Google, Yahoo!, and Bing, and while each of them are useful, they
can also yield different results.

How to start searching

When it comes to starting a search, there are two common methods that are both easy
to find and user-friendly.

Option 1: The homepage. Go to the search engine's homepage, for example google.com,
and type your search terms into the text box. To see your results, you can press the Enter
key, or you can click an icon, such as the Google Search button or a magnifying glass.

Option 2: Your browser's address bar. Depending on your browser, you may be able to
conduct a search right from the browser's interface. For example, in Chrome, you can enter
your search term directly into the address bar. In Internet Explorer, you can use either the
address bar or the built-in search bar to start a search.

After you run a search, you'll see a list of relevant websites that match your search
terms. These are commonly known as search results. If you see a site that looks interesting,
you can click a link to open it. If the site doesn't have what you need, you can simply return
to the results page to look for more options.

2
Search suggestions
If you're having trouble thinking of new search terms, you can use search suggestions
instead. These will usually appear as you're typing, and they're a great way to find new
keywords you might not have tried otherwise. To use a search suggestion, you can click it
with your mouse, or select it with the arrow keys on your keyboard.

Overall, Google is the most popular search engine. It's so popular, in fact, that it's even
become a common verb, like when someone says, I'm googling the address right now.

Search strategies
With a few basic search strategies, you can usually find almost anything you want. It
doesn't matter if you're using Google or any other search engine because these techniques
are effective no matter where you search.
➢ Keep it simple: Make your searches brief by focusing on keywords, then keep the
number of these keywords to a minimum. This way, you're more likely to get
relevant results.
➢ Consider suggestions: As you enter your term, search engines will suggest the
most popular results involving the term so don't be afraid to select one, as they can
often give you plenty of new ideas.
➢ Use natural language: You don't have to use complicated words or phrases to get
results. Search engines can recognize the language you naturally use in your
everyday life, so feel free to try whatever comes to mind.

Advanced search
These days, search engines have become incredibly effective at getting you the results
you want. However, there are rare occasions when you may need to search for very specific
information that a normal search can't find. That's where Google's Advanced Search comes
in.

You can access it from the Google search results page by clicking Settings and
selecting Advanced Search. From there, you can search in a multitude of ways, from finding
results that contain an exact word or phrase to narrowing down your results by language or
reading level.

Using fast facts with Google

Fast facts are tricks you can use to get answers to common questions, like solving
math problems, looking up sports scores, or converting measurements. Simply type your
query in the search box, such as 5 miles to km or 79 + 481, and the answer will appear at
the top of the results page.

Utilize Autocomplete
As you type in the search bar, Google automatically uses a feature called
Autocomplete, which suggests the most popular results involving your search term. You can
pick one of these new ideas with the mouse or arrow keys, or you can keep typing to get
different suggestions.

BASIC BROWSING AND SEARCHING TECHNIQUES

To search for something on the internet, you can do the following:
1. Open the web browser and navigate to a search engine. Most web browsers generally allow
you to search directly from the address bar. However, some browsers might actually have
a separate search bar next to the address bar.
2. Type in one or more keywords (this is also known as the search term).
3. Press Enter on the keyboard.

3
4. After you have pressed Enter, you will see a list of all the relevant websites that match the
search words. If a site looks interesting or looks like what you are looking for, click on the
link to open it.
5. Skim through it.
6. If it is not exactly what you are looking for, return to the results and look at other websites.
REFINING YOUR SEARCH
If you still have problems finding the exact website, you can use the following special
characters to help refine your search:
▪ To exclude a word from the search, type in a hyphen (-) at the beginning of the word.
For example, if you want to find grey matter results without mention of the movie with
the same name, you could search for grey matter – movie.
▪ At the same time, if you use a (+) before the beginning of the word or phrase, the search
results will show results with just the movie mentioned e.g. grey matter + movie.
▪ You can also search for the exact words or phrases, which can give you much better
results. To do this, use quotation marks (“ ’’) before and after the search words. For
example, if you search for “grey matter songs”, the search results will only have songs
about grey matter.
The best results are usually shown on the top page, with the least popular or visited
results appearing on the second and third search pages. Since the first search results are
usually the best, if you do not find what you are looking for on the first page or two of the
results, you should try a different search phrase, or try to use an advanced search technique.

SEARCH TECHNIQUES
The following table highlights a few of the most useful search techniques.

These techniques can be very useful. However, because search engines have become
extremely efficient, you can even find information without using these “special” techniques.
