Trouble shooting and correction

General information
This trouble shooting guide mainly lists possible errors of X-ray inspection units type HI-SCAN 10080 EDt S as well
as measures to correct such errors. Other errors that may probably be corrected by the operating personnel are de-
scribed in the respective operating instruction.

a scribed
Observe the Safety instructions at the beginning of this manual when undertaking any of the work de-
below!

a All work must be performed only by a qualified service technician!

i To do a successful trouble shooting it is essential that you correct the errors according to the order of er-
rors listed in this guide, i.e. errors in the power supply system have to be corrected before looking for er-
rors in the X-ray generating system.

i Switch off the communication among individual subsystems temporarily (service menu page 2) in order
to localize the error systematically (see section Test- and diagnosis programs).

i In section "System description" you find a survey on the functions of individual subsystems that are need-
ed for trouble shooting. Please find the valid circuit diagrams in the appendix of this manual.

i You should, in any case, check the status indicators on the system monitor. Here you find important infor-
mation on the current status of the unit.

i In the general plan Z 5507593-Z you find the positions of the individual electrical components.

Trouble shooting and correction

The trouble shooting guide is divided into five main groups:

• Mains switching system, power system

• Control-, light barrier-, conveyor system
• Pneumatic system
• X-ray generating system
• Image generating system
• Image evaluating system
• Untypical system behaviour
• Error messages

There are some test and diagnostic programs available for trouble shooting purposes. Such programs are detailed
in section Test and diagnosis programs.

Besides that, you should pay attention to the LEDs of the individual components which also give you some informa-
tion on possible causes of error. The function of the respective LEDs is partly described in the modules’ adjustment
instructions.

Trouble shooting and correction

Mains switching system, power system

Power-on impossible
In case of problems with switching on the X-ray inspection unit, first check if relay K4 (=S+001-K4, main distribu-
tion) switches. If it does, skip the following paragraph and proceed with the next one.

i When doing a trouble shooting, use the circuit diagram in the appendix of this manual.

Possible cause Test point Correction

Mains voltage missing input terminal e Check local mains voltage and connect mains

e Check primary and secondary voltage of power
supply -G1, switch off and replace defective con-
sumers.

e Replace fuse in 24 V circuit. If the fuse responds

several times, eliminate the cause (defective
consumer, short circuit etc.).

e Replace power supply if defective.

UPS deactivated =S+520-A1 e Check the power supply of the PI 4 board.

e Activate UPS manually.

e Check if a serial connection to the PI 4 board ex-

ists. For this, separate the connection to the PI 4
board and check the serial communication of the
UPS by means of the APC diagnostics software.

e Replace UPS if defective.

X-ray generating system

i Before starting the trouble shooting in the X-ray generating system, all errors of the power supply, the
control system and the pneumatic system must have been corrected!

a Ifhave
the X-ray inspection unit or the substitute generator has not been operated for more than 2 months, you
to carry out a regeneration. The corresponding information can be obtained from the Adjustment in-
structions of the generator control. The non-respect of this instruction may lead to the destruction of the
X-ray generator!

i Make sure that the DIP switches of the respective generator control have been correctly set.

i To quickly test or trace signals, use the I/O test in the diagnosis menu.

i Check the error report in the menu Diagnosis. If errors are listed in the report which led to a stop of the X-
ray generator, correct these errors (see paragraph "Error messages, (f 40).

Trouble shooting and correction

Untypical system behaviour

After software updates, reinstallation...
After updating the software, individual functions of the X-ray inspection unit may possibly show malfunctions. This
can have an impact e.g. on the calibration with the geometry body, or the communication with the UPS is not re-
established. In these cases, we recommend a dongle reset.
From software version ES-09-03-A on, you can load the current parameters on a storage media in the Hardware and
Software menu under Software configuration. Then remove the dongle from the Acquisition Controller and restart
the computer. The Acquisition Controller will be started as HS 6040. All data from the storage media are loaded into
the Acquisition Controller which will be restarted subsequently. Incorrect dongle information are thus deleted and
overwritten by the original values.

i After this procedure a complete calibration of the X-ray inspection unit must be run!

Failure of the HMS in the system

If the X-ray inspection unit in the automatic explosives detection system is controlled via an HMS/HMC a failure of
the HMS may cause operating troubles of the X-ray inspection unit.

Switch on the X-ray inspection unit

In case of an HMS/HMc failure, switching on the X-ray inspection unit cannot be executed via the BHS and the HMC.
To switch on the X-ray inspection unit externally again, the wire jumper X36;3,4 must be inserted on the PI 4 board.

Change detection characteristics

Changing the detection characteristics via the HMS/HMC is no longer possible. A change of the detection charac-
teristics can only be carried out if you log in to the X-ray inspection unit as "Supervisor (002)" and change it in the
Automatic detection menu.

Preselect the NO SCAN mode

If the X-ray inspection unit is switched into the NO SCAN mode via HMS/HMC it cannot be switched into the screen-
ing mode in case the HMS fails. In this case, you have to log in to the X-ray inspection unit as "Service (004)" to
switch the X-ray inspection unit into the screening mode again in the Internal/external menu.

Trouble shooting and correction

Internal errors

i If an internal or unknown error occurs, either the software is defective, corrupt or misconfigured or the Hi-
TraX electronics are defective.

Before continuing with the trouble shooting, you should try to reset the software configuration to the default status
by resetting the dongle (section "Software installation and configuration"). Then you have to adapt the settings to
the unit via the Hardware menu. This way you will avoid operating troubles caused by wrong software configuration.

If the error cannot be corrected by resetting the dongle to the default status, you have to re-install the software (sec-
tion "Software installation and configuration").

a Before re-installing the software you should, if possible, memorize the data of the hard disk (user data,
images etc.)! Use the ZIP disks (operating instructions) or a network connection.

a hard
If you carry out a re-installation of the software, the date of the last generator operation memorized on the
disk will, among other things, be lost! Warning messages can therefore not be automatically gener-
ated!
If you are not sure that the X-ray generator has been operated within the last 2 months (140kV genera-
tors), put the X-ray generator out of operation and carry out a regeneration after having installed the soft-
ware (see section "Hardware configuration")!

e If the error cannot be corrected by means of a re-installation of the software, exchange the HiTraX electronics.
