Day 2 Faculty Profile
Good evening all. Welcome to the second day of the online winter school. today ‘s all about climate
change. For the first session we have Prof. Anand Rao, H.O.D CTARA to talk about Concept of
Mitigation in climate change
Anand B. Rao is the Professor and Head of the department at the Centre for Technology Alternatives for
Rural Areas (CTARA) at IIT Bombay. He teaches courses related to Energy, Environment and Climate
Policy at CTARA, at Inter-Disciplinary Program (IDP) in Climate Studies and at the Department of
Energy Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay. He received his PhD from the Department of
Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA, focusing on the techno-
economic and environmental aspects of carbon capture systems for power plants. He holds a master’s
degree (M.Tech.) in Environmental Science and Engineering and a bachelor’s degree (B.Tech.) in
Chemical Engineering, both from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. Prof. Anand also serves as
a Lead Author for the “Mitigation pathways compatible with long term goals” in the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Assessment Report 6 (AR6) for the Working Group - III. His areas of
Research Interests include Energy and Environment, Technology Assessment, Climate Change
Mitigation, Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS), Renewables and Energy Efficiency, Waste
Management, Energy Policy and Planning, Rural Energy Consumption, Rural Livelihoods, NTFPs(Non-
timber forest products), Supply Chain Analysis.
Prof. Subhankar Karmakar, CESE and IDP for Climate Studies, IIT Bombay.
Prof Subhankar Karmakar works as Professor at Centre for Environmental Science and Engineering
(CESE) and as Associated Faculty at Inter-Disciplinary Program in Climate Studies and Centre for Urban
Science & Engineering (C-USE) at IIT Bombay. He received his PhD which was upgraded from master’s
degree from Water Resources and Environmental Engineering Department of Civil Engineering at Indian
Institute of Science, Bangalore on the topic “Grey optimization for uncertainty modeling in water
resources systems”. He holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Jalpaiguri Government
Engineering College, West Bengal, India. He is an Associate Member of the Institute of Engineers
(India), a Member of American Geophysical Union (AGU) and a Member of International Society of
Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety, Germany. He also serves as a Member of the Editorial
Advisory Board, Journal of Disaster Advances, India. Research interests include, Environmental and
Water Resources Systems, Uncertainty Modeling and Decision Science for Environmental Systems:
probabilistic, fuzzy and interval approaches; multi-attribute decision making, Hydro-climatic Extremes
and Flood Management: multivariate flood and drought frequency analyses, non-stationary modelling of
hydro-climatic extremes, mapping vulnerability to natural and human-induced hazards using GIS, flood
risk mapping, near-real-time flood forecasting, Environmetrics: multivariate statistical surface water
quality assessment, evaluation of trophic states, rationalization of water quality monitoring stations.
