We are indeed living in a period of ‘garbage’, a time when the nation’s condition is getting
worse from time to time. It is hard to imagine how this could get any worse than it is now.
Former Czechoslovakia president, Vaclav Havel, who has a good image among his people,
showed that politics is the will to make people happy. However, politicians nowadays only full of
energy when they talk about power, particularly when the issue brings benefits to them. One
scandal occurs and another follows, either by the same of different actors. Recently, for example,
several newspapers reveal the evidence that many candidates for the provincial legislative board
have falsified their academic degrees.
We should never retreat from the war against ‘black’ politicians. Therefore, we must say firmly
that there will be no compromise to politicians who build their careers on a cheat.

To improve comfort and cleanliness at our school, a number of dustbins should be increased.
When we look at classrooms, school corridors and schoolyard, there are papers, mineral water
cups, straws, and napkins here and there. The condition of uncleanliness and discomfort really
hinders learning and teaching environment. Litters thrown carelessly cause disease, especially
empty plastic cups or glasses. They can be placed for dangue mosquitoes to spread out. Besides,
this rubbish can deteriorate the scene. Well-painted wall and green schoolyard do not mean
anything if litters are scattered everywhere.
Anyway I notice that most of the students in our school have responsibilities for their school
environment. They put their litters on the proper places. But some are not diligent enough to find
the dustbins. The numbers of dustbins in our schools are not enough. More dustbins should be put
beside each of steps, outside of the classrooms, and some more along the corridors. Probably one
dustbin should be in every ten meters. So when students want to throw away their litters, they can
find the dustbins easily.
When school is equipped with sufficient dustbins, we do not have problems of filth and
discomfort anymore. Our school will be very clean and become a nice place to study.
What is the writer’s intention? To … readers do something good.

a. should be decorated
b. should be painted
c. should be placed
d. are unnecessary
e. are not required

a. They can prevent litters.
b. They can save janitor’s energy.
c. Students are asked to clean them.

24. What is the writer’s suggestion?

Building credit card debt is much like piling on the kilos. We put things in our mounth and
hope the kilojoules will magically disappear. Similarly, in this area of immediate gratification,

To Whom it may concern,
“Indonesian Idol” is an annual Indonesian televised singing competition which has been airing
on RCTI. Part of the Idol franchasie, it originated from the British reality program “Pop Idol”.
“Indonesian Idol” is a combination of a reality show and a talent search show. Unfortunately, in
spite of the fact that this show gives the opportunity to anyone who has talent and capable to be
promoted as an idol, I find some weaknesses in this program.
Sometimes, the winner is not guaranteed to have a quality of a good singer because the winner
is merely determined by public voting by phone and sms. Most of these voters do not consider the
jury’s comments on the contestant’s performance because they would prefer focusing on the
contestant’s physical appearance and personality rather that his/her singing quality.
As a consequence, after the competition is over, only few of the winners get the chance to be
professional singers. Furthermore, most of them only have little experience in the show business,
while being professional singers need a long process and time.
My suggestion is that “Indonesian Idol” should not determine the winner based on the
contestant’s popularity. The singing quality of each contestant should be the first priority.
Yours truly,
Pinky Baboe-Semarang

Although they are an inexpensive supplier of vitamin, mineral, and high-quality protein, eggs also
contain a high level of cholesterol, one of the major cause of heart disease. One egg yolk, in fact,
contains a little more than two-thirds of the suggested daily cholesterol limit. This knowledge has
caused egg sales to drop abruptly in recent years, which in turn has brought about the development of
several alternatives to eating regular eggs. One alternative is to eat substitute eggs. These eggs
substitutes are not really eggs, but they look somewhat like eggs when they are cooked. They have the
advantage of having lower cholesterol rates, and they can be scrambled or used in baking. One
disadvantage, however, is that they are not good for frying, poaching, or boiling. A second alternative
to regular eggs is a new type of eggs, sometimes called designer eggs. These eggs are produced by
hens that are fed low-fat diets consisting of ingredient such as canola oil, flax, and rice bran. In spite of
their diets, however, these hens produce eggs that contain the same amount of cholesterol as regular
eggs. Yet, the producers of these eggs claim that eating their eggs will not raise the blood cholesterol in
humans.
Egg producers claim that their pproduct has been portrayed unfairly. They cite scientific studies to
back up their claim. And, in fact, studies on the relationship between eggs and human cholesterol
levels have brought mixed results. It may be that it is not the type of eggs that is the main determinant
of cholesterol but the person who is eating the eggs. Some people may be more sensitive tocholesterol
derived from food than other people. In fact, there is evidence that certain dietary fast stimulate the
body’s production of blood cholesterol. Consequently, while it still makes sense to limit one’s intake
of eggs, even designer eggs, it seems that doing this without regulating dietary fat will probably not
help reduce the blood cholesterol level.
31. Eggs provide a lot of substances which are good for people’s health; however, they …
a. supply vitamins
b. contain minerals
c. are inexpensive
d. provide the need protein
e. contain a high level of cholesterol
32. The text concludes that in terms of eating eggs, human cholesterol levels are determined by …
a. the type of eggs consumed
b. the ingredients of the eggs
Wildlife is a forest resource. The forest provides food and shelter for large and varied population
of birds and animals. Millions of people look to the forests as wood supply for the chief fuel for
cooking, furniture, and as places of recreation. Work is still used everywhere, in old ways and new
ways.
Trees grow wherever there is enough moisture and a long enough growing season. During their
growing season, trees need much water. So forest growth is limited to region with ample rainfall, at
lease 380 to 500 millimeters a year. Forests do not grow about the timberline on high mountain, or in
the area where the growing season is too short.
A forest is a community of many living things. Trees are like apartment houses. Some bird and
insects, live high in the treetops, other lower down. Some animals live on the forest floor, other
underground among the roots. Every part of the tree is food for some animals. Birds eat fruit and seeds.
Deer browse on leaves and twigs. Squirrels eat nuts. Porcupines eat the inner bark. Some insect eat
roots, some drink sap, many eat green leaves and other chew tunnels under the dark. Many animals eat
insect or birds, lizards, snakes, toads, and larger insects. They in turn are eaten by other animals.
They supply of the trees should be limitless. Settlers should not cut burn forests to clear land for
farming. One way to assure growth is to plant new trees after harvesting.

Town ‘Contaminated’
Moscow (JP)- A Russian journalist has uncovered evidence at another Soviet nuclear catastrophe,
which killed 10 sailors and contaminated an entire town.
Yelena Vazrshavskya is the first journalist to speak to people who witnessed the explosion of a
nuclear submarine at the naval base of Shkotovo-22 near Vladivostock.
The accident, spread radio active fall-out over the Chernobyl disaster, spread radio active fall-out
over the then Soviet Union. Residents were told the explosion in the reactor of the Victor-class
submarine during a refit had been a ‘thermal’ and not nuclear explosion. And those involved in the

In the cave, Nyi (Mrs) Kamiyem and Ki (Mr) Padmo sit on a big stone. Nyi Kamiyem will sing a
song and Ki Padmo will beat the drum. Joining them are people called Wiyogo which are drummers
and other gamelan musicians.
What makes this unique is that they mix gamelan with the sound of nature. The visitors dance,
forgetting all problems.
Many tourists go to this cave. Maybe you are interested in going there too but you don’t know
where it is. Gua Tabuhan is located near Pacitan in East Java. It is situated in a lime hill called Tapan,
in Tabuhan, Wareng village. The route is easy. Along the road there is beautiful tropical scenery to
enjoy rice fields, coconut-palms and birds.
East of the cave peddlers sell souvenirs. The drink and food peddlers are on the north side. People
sell agates on the cave terraces. Somehow, it is like a fire.
It is said that the cave is the only place where nature produces sounds like the music of gamelan.
Nyi Kamiyem, a well-known Pesinden (traditional Javanese singer) from the village of Gabuhan, who
often sings in the cave, does not doubt anything.
Gua Tabuhan did not use to welcome visitors. According to Kartowiryo (90), village elder, Gua
Tabuhan used to be a hiding place for robbers. It was believed to believed to be a sacred place. No one
dared go inside. However, Wedana (chief of district) Kartodiprojo, went to the cave to find out what
was wrong. He found out that the cave was inhabited by the annoying evil spirits. The people chased
the spirits away.
The cave is dark, so people need lights, and a local guide will lead the way. Sometimes visitors
bump their heads against the sharp rocks on the ceiling.
Inside the cave there is a plain big stone which is believed to be the prayer mat of Pangeran
Diponogoro, one of the Indonesian heroes who fought against the Dutch. It is said that Pangeran
Diponegoro used to seclude himself in the cave. Some people now use the place for meditation.
There is a stream in the cave, in the east corner, which can only be seen outside. However, it can
be heard from inside. Bisedes the cave, Watukarang, a beach nearby, is good to visit. By the way, do
you want different souvenirs? You can find them in Donorodjo village where agate craftsman work.
So, have a nice journey.

Southeast Asia as unique odor, and a formidable thorn-convered husk. The fruit can grow up to 30
centimeters (12 in) long and 15 centimeters (6 in) in diameter, and typically weight one to three
kilograms (2 to 7 lb). Its shape range from oblong to round, the color of its husk green to brown and its
flesh pale-yellow to red, depending on species. The hard outer husk is covered with sharp, prickly
thorns, while the edible flesh within emits the distinctive odor, which is regarded as either fragrant or

husk of the fruits is still intact.
The flesh of durian, famously described by the British naturalis Alfred Russel Wallace as “a rich
custard highly flavored with almonds,” can be consumed at various stages of ripeness, and is uused
flavor a wide variety of edibles, both savory and sweet.
Durians from different species or clones can have significantly different aromas; for example,
red durian has a deep caramel flavor with a turpentine odor, while red degree of ripeness has a great
effect on the flavor as well. Three scientific analyses of the compositions of durian aroma-from
1972,1980 and 1995-each found a different mix of volatile compounds, including esters, ketones, and
many different organosulfur compounds, with no agreement on which may be primarily responsible for
the distinctive odor.

Sometimes we see chimpanzees doing human things. They drink from cups, or take photos.
Why? Chimpanzees belong to the same family of apes as the huge gorillas of Africa and the red
orangutan of Southeast Asia, but scientist think that chimpanzees are the most intelligent.
They come from the rain forest and grassland of Central and West Africa; they have got long
black hair and they haven’t got tails. An adult male is about 85 centimeters tall and weighs about forty
kilos.
Chimpanzees live in large groups of twenty-five to fifty animals, and one male chimpanzee is the
leader. They spend most of their time on the ground but they also climb trees to find food. They eat
mainly fruit and insects, and sometimes they eat meat such as monkeys. When they hunt, the males
work together. The they share the food with the whole family group.
But the greatest sign of the chimpanzee’s intelligence is that is makes and uses tools. It pokes a
stick into an ants’ nest, then pulls out the stick and eat the ants. It also uses stones to crack nuts, and it

Some of the most world’s finest roads make use of bodies of water. They are called canals.
Canals are man made waterways. They are usually straight and narrow. But they are filled with
water. They connect rivers and lakes, oceans so that boats and ships can go from one to the other.
Most canals are used for transportation. Barges, boats, and ships carry goods over canals. Some
are used also reduce the cost of shopping goods and offer travel short cuts.
Canals even go over hills and mountains. But you know that water can’t flow up a hill; so how can
the water and boats in a canal go up a hill?
Something called a lock is used. It is a giant tank. The tank is big enough to hold a long boat. The
boat floats into the tank, and the doors behind it are closed to lock the boat. The boat floats into the
tank, and the doors behind it are closed to lock the boat in there. Then more water is let into the tank.
When the tank is full of water is let into the tank. When the tank is full of water, the tank door in front
of the boat is opened and the boat floats out. The boat floats higher and higher part of the water rises. It
floats either out into a higher part of the canal or into another tank or lock, which will lift it still higher.
To go down the hill on the other side, the boat enters a lock that is full of water. As the water is
let out, the boat will float lower and lower. So locks make it possible for boats or ships to move from
one water level to another.

A mangrove is a tropical marine tree or shrub of the genus Rhizopora. Mangroves have special
aerial roots and salt-filtering tap roots that enable them to thrive in brackish water (brackish water is
salty, but not as salty as sea water).
There are several species of mangrove trees found all like to be very close to a large fresh water
source (such as a river). Some species have roots covered with sea water everyday during high tide.
Other species grow on dry land, but are still part of the ecosystem.
Mangroves need to keep their trunk and leaves above the surface of the water. Yet they also need to
be firmly attached to the ground so they are not moved by waves. There are three types of mangrove
roots that play an important role for it:
1) support roots which directly pierce the soil;
2) level-growing roots which twist upwards and downwards, with the upward twists emerging on the
water surface;
3) level-growing roots whose downward twist (sub-roots) appear on the water surface.
Any part of a root that appears above the water flows oxygen to the plant under water surface. As
the soil begins to build up, these roots produce additional roots that become embedded in the soil.

Petroleum pproducts, such as gasoline, kerosene, home heating oil, residual fuel oil and
lubricating oils, come from one source. Crude oil is found below the earth surface, as well as under
large bodies of water, from a few hundred feet below the surface to as deep as 25.000 feet into the
earth interior. Crude oil is obtained by drilling a hole through the earth, but sometimes more dry
holes are drilled than those producing oil. Pressure at the source, or pumping, forces the crude oil
to the surface.
Crude oil wells flow at varying rates, from ten to thousands of barrels per hour. Petroleum
products vary greatly in physical appearance: thin, thick, transparent, or opaque. Their chemical
compositions are made up of only two elements: carbon and hydrogen, which form compounds
called hydrocarbons. Other chemical elements found in the union classified as impurities. Trace
elements are also found, but these are of such minute quantities that they are disregarded.
The various petroleum products are refined from the crude oil by heating and condensing the
vapors of crude oil. These products are called light oils such gasoline, kerosene, and distillate oil.

These days, everybody buys computer software. Consumers purchase all kinds of software, from
games for the kids to highly sophisticate professional programs and everything in between. Computer
software has become part of everybody’s daily life, and this is just one more thing adding to an ever-
growing problem.
The excessive packaging on computer software is joining catchy wrappers, durable plastic and
cardboard boxes, plastic jugs, and other types of packaging in the trash. Everything we buy is packaged
in one way or another. When we get our purchases home, we unwrap them and throw the packaging in
the trash. It then ends up in the nation’s garbage dumps.
Communities all around the country are struggling with the problem of where to put all this waste.
Much of this excessive packaging serves only to make the products more attractive to consumers. It
catches the eye but does not really protect the goods from damage.
Environmentalists are asking consumers to say “No!” to wasteful packaging practices. Please
purchase only those products that come with a minimum of packaging or that are packaged in 100%
recycled materials.

Continued progress in advanced technology is not necessary. Already the technical progress in
our world has caused severe pollution in the air and in the water. Although the technical progress
in previous years has been helpful, recent technology has significantly increased pollution.
Another reason to stop technical progress is that many inventions which were developed for
good causes are now also used for powerful weapons or have been found to have serious side
effects. For example, pesticide put inside particle board to prevent termites has now been found to
be toxic to human life.
Technology does not always bring good effects; for example, computers do much work faster
than man, but then man loses his job to a machine. Because no man can guarantee that technology
will have only good effects and will be used only for the benefit of man, we should delay the
continued development of technology.
The writer’s purpose in writing this paragraph is …
a. To make people implement advanced technology
b. To describe pollution caused by advanced technology
c. To explain what further inventions in technology
d. To explain what further inventions in technology should be made
e. To show how advantageous advanced technology is for human beings
46. Advanced technology has made people’s lives more comfortable; nevertheless …
a. It is useful and beneficial to people
b. Many people are no longer unemployed
c. It help people to kill termites through pesticides
d. It is causing a lot of damage to the environment
e. Many inventions were developed for good causes

Gene Splicing
Genetic research has produced both exciting and frightening possibilities. Scientists are now
able to create new forms of life in the laboratory due to the development of gene splicing.
One the one hand, the ability to create life in the laboratory could greatly benefit mankind. For
example, sources, scientists have developed a method to manufacture it inexpensively in the
laboratory.
Another beneficial application of gene splicing is in agriculture. Scientists foresee the day when
new plants will be devoleped using nitrogen from the air instead from fertilizer. Therefore food
production could be developed to feed the world’s hungry people.
Not everyone is excited about gene splicing, however. Some people feel that it could have
terrible consequences. A laboratory accident, for example, might cause an epidemic of an unknown
disease that could wipe out humanity.
As a result of this controversy, the government as made rules to control genetic experiments.
While some members of the scientific community feel that these rules ae so strict, many other
people feel that they are still not strict enough.
