GROUP ACTIVITY

POPSICLE STICK CATAPULT

Objectives:

Mission
Build a Popsicle Slingshot activity, use popsicle sticks and
craft materials to build a small catapult and then explore the
role of potential and kinetic energy in launching a cotton or
paper ball.

Procedure
 Stack 3 popsicle sticks together, tie rubber bands at either end
 Stack 2 sticks together, tie 1 rubber band at one end
 Open the 2-stack, wedging the 3-stack in between them.
 secure your sticks with 2 rubber bands.
 Wrap the second rubber band in the opposite direction of the first so that your bands
make an “X” where the sticks intersect

Questions
1. Make 2 or 3 different kinds, and vary the positioning of the rubber bands and sticks, to
see which works the best. See which one can go the furthest.
2. Explain your answer why?
3. When the slingshot is pulled back therefore the slingshot must have what energy?
