Student Name:

Teacher: Loh Giblett Kelly Day Le McRae Kurup

Time Allowed: 45 minutes

Total Marks: / 51
Attempt all questions.
All necessary working and reasoning must be shown for full marks.
Where appropriate, answers should be given to two decimal places.
Marks may not be awarded for untidy or poorly arranged work.

Question 1. [6 marks]

Given the coordinate points 𝐴(−6, 6) and B(2, −10), determine:

(a) the gradient between points A and B. [2]

(b) the general equation of the line that passes through points A and B. [2]

(c) whether the point (1, 8) lies on this line. [2]

1
Question 2. [7 marks]

Determine the linear equation, of the form 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑐, for each of the following:

(a) [2]
x -1 0 1 2 3
y -3 1 5 9 13

(b) [2]

(c) [3]
x -6 -2 2 6 10
y 11 9 7 5 3

2
Question 3. [5 marks]
!
Consider the equations 𝑦 + " = 4 .

(a) State the gradient of the line. [1]

(b) Determine the values of the 𝑥 and 𝑦-intercepts. [2]

(c) Hence, Graph this equation on the axes below. [2]

3
Question 4. [5 marks]

Alex (A) and Ben (B) are located at two points on the cartesian plane below.

(a) State the midpoint between Alex and Ben. [2]

They are planning to meet up at a shopping centre which is located at the point (5,0).

(b) Determine who is closer to the shopping centre. [3]

Question 5. [4 marks]

A line segment has a start point at (𝑎, 𝑏) and midpoint point at (3𝑎, 0).

(a) State the end point of the line segment. [2]

(b) Determine the gradient of the line segment. [2]

4
Question 6. [4 marks]

The line 2𝑦 = −3𝑥 − 6 has been graphed on the axes below.

(a) Graph the line 𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 4 on the same set of axes. [3]

𝑦

2𝑦 = −3𝑥 − 6

(a) Hence, or otherwise, state the solution to the set of equations: [1]
2𝑦 = −3𝑥 − 6
𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 4

Question 7. [8 marks]

Elijah owns an electrical business called Sparkling Electrical. He charges customers at a

rate of $75 per hour plus any parts that he may need to supply i.e. power points, light
switches, cabling, ect.

For a particular job Elijah needed to supply parts that would cost $150:
(a) Determine an equation that represents his total Charges (C) to complete this job in
terms of time (t). [2]

(b) Graph this equation on the axes provided, labelling the axes appropriately. [3]

This job took him 6 hours to complete,

(c) State the total amount he will charge the customer. [1]

The customer then asked Elijah to do a couple extra jobs around the house which
increased the cost of parts he supplied by $50.

(d) Describe how this would affect the equation from part (a) and state the new
equation. [2]

6
Question 8. [4 marks]

Using the process of substitution, determine the solutions to the following set of
equations:
𝑦 = 3𝑥 + 5
𝑦 − 2𝑥 = 1

Question 9. [3 marks]

Three consecutive even numbers have a sum of 96.

Create an equation then solve to determine what the three consecutive even numbers
must be.

7
Question 10. [5 marks]

Tickets to an AFL game cost $45 for children and $70 for adults. At one particular game
between the Beagles and Seamantle, 10 000 people attended and the total sales of
tickets was $600 000.

Using, c, to represent the number of children and, a, to represent the number of adults:

(a) Create two equations in terms of c and a. [2]

(b) Use an appropriate method to solve the simultaneous equations found in part (a)
and state how many children and adults attended the game. [3]
