INTRODUCTION

This manual contains general information regarding the

GRAPHIC CONTROL SYSTEM (GCS) operating
system, as well as specific installation, setup and
operating instructions for the EXPANSION I/O MODULE
for GCS Controllers.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The GCS family of motor protection and control devices

can expand their input and output capabilities by utilizing
up to three Expansion I/O Modules. The Graphic Control
System (GCS) family of control products provides a high
speed telemetry interface port (CITIBusTM ) that permits
and simplifies control system expansion and
customization by use of these expansion modules.

Each Expansion I/O Module includes:

2 - analog inputs 4-20mA or 0-10Vdc selectable

2 - analog outputs 4-20mA
3 - digital inputs - closed contacts or 5 - 120V DC/AC
3 - digital outputs (dry relay contacts, 10A-250V)
(1-Form C, Normally Open and Closed)
(2-Form A, Normally Open)

Since each GCS system can accommodate three

expansion modules, the total expansion I/O on the GCS
host (Electrospeed or Vortex) can reach:

6 - analog inputs - 4-20mA or 0-10Vdc selectable

6 - analog outputs - 4-20mA
9 - digital inputs - closed contacts or 5 - 120V DC/AC
9 - digital outputs - (dry relay contacts, 10A-250V)
(3-Form C, Normally Open and Closed)
(6-Form A, Normally Open)

For information about physical configuration of modules,

please refer to the Hardware Configuration portion of
this manual.

GCS BASICS

GRAPHICS DISPLAY OVERVIEW

This portion of the GCS Expansion I/O operators manual

describes the basic principles of the Graphic Control
operating System. It also describes the operation of the
keypad, the LCD display screen and the operator’s
interface to the system. To locate information pertaining
to any specific parameter, use the index at the end of
this manual to locate a keyword, then view the
information on the page(s) indicated. The GCS
controllers utilize a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel as
the primary operator interface. Using this display, the
operator can view and/or modify all setpoints contained
in the controller. Whenever the GCS controller is first
powered up, the LCD display will show the MAIN MENU
screen, similar to the illustration at left.

The interface has several keypad switches whose

functions are defined as follows:

START The green START key is pressed to manually start the

motor.

The red STOP key manually stops the motor and is also
used to clear or reset a “lockout” condition
STOP

The arrow keys are used to move the cursor on the

screen or to increment & decrement numbers
when calibrating or editing a setpoint.

The ENTER key is used to select highlighted menu

items or to program or finalize a setpoint or value entry.
ENTER

The MENU key is used as a backup or cancel key, or to

abort any adjustment in progress. Press MENU
MENU repeatedly to access the MAIN MENU screen.

4
DISPLAYING A MENU, READING OR SETPOINT

The operator interacts with the GCS CONTROLLER by

pressing the keypad switches below the LCD display
screen. Use the arrow keys to move the highlighting
pointer to the desired menu item and then press the
ENTER button to select that item. (Although the
highlighting pointer changes in appearance depending
on the information displayed on the screen, it is always
implemented in "reverse color" compared to other text
on screen.) As an example, to display the current
operational status of the motor controlled by a VORTEX
GCS, use the arrow keys to move the highlight to the
center "STATUS" position and press the ENTER key.
The GCS will display the status screen and show
running status information similar to the screen shown at
left. To return back to the previous menu, press the
MENU key and the display will change back to the MAIN
MENU screen

GCS DISPLAY CONVENTIONS

All GCS menus and screens use common symbols to

convey information. For example, when a menu screen
contains more information than can fit onto one page of
display, the graphic MORE will appear at the bottom of
the screen to indicate that using the arrow keys to move
the cursor to the bottom of the page will cause the
screen text to scroll upward until the bottom line of the
menu is displayed. Several menu screens can also be
linked together by the left and right arrow keys. This is
indicated by the MORE and MORE graphics appearing
on the left and right ends of the bar at the top of the
screen. When a parameter can be modified, the small
arrow pointer, appears at the right edge of the
parameter’s line. All of the parameters on the example
screen shown at left can be edited.

This pointer at the end of the line indicates that

parameter can be edited.

Indicates that additional menus can be accessed by

MORE pressing the “left” arrow key.

Additional menus can be accessed by pressing the

MORE “right” arrow key.

More information or additional menu items can be

MORE MORE reached by pressing the up or down arrow key and
moving the cursor to the bottom or top of the screen.

5
EDITING A READING OR SETPOINT

Any parameter within the VORTEX GCS that can be

edited or changed will display a small arrowhead on the
right side of the cursor bar. To edit any of these
parameters, use the arrow keys and the ENTER key to
cause the desired point to be highlighted by the cursor.
When there, press the ENTER key to activate the edit
mode for that point. The present value of that parameter
will appear in "reverse color" as in the illustration at left.
Now, pressing the UP/DOWN arrow keys will now cause
that value to increase or decrease. When the reading
reaches the desired value, release the arrow key, then
press and release the ENTER key to save the newly
modified setting. If the user wishes to abort any
modifications, simply press the MENU key instead of the
ENTER key to cancel the changes.

If a large number change is required, the user can use

the LEFT/RIGHT arrow keys to shift the cursor to the
appropriate digit location and then use the UP/DOWN
arrow keys to change that digit. As an example, the
illustrations at left show the steps taken to change the
Analog Input #1 Maximum value setpoint from 300 to
3300.

Note, if the controller does not allow the user to "edit"

any reading although the edit arrowhead is displayed, it
is possible that system security has been enabled and
the user must first enter a valid password. Read the
SYSTEM SECURITY section to learn about working with
security levels. “Read-only” parameters or menu
selections do not display the small triangular graphic
symbol at the right side of the display line.
The screen at left shows Present Value as “read-only”,
three editable parameters and two menu selections.

6
THE GCS MENUS
The following section will list and explain all the menus
and parameters that are pertinent to the use of the
Expansion I/O modules. Access to these parameters is
accomplished by moving the cursor to the top left
position, GCS Modules, as shown below, and pressing
the ENTER key. Subsequent menus and parameters are
found as sub-menus of this GCS Modules. Some of the
display screens are longer than will fit unto the 11 lines
of text available on one screen. For clarity within this
manual, most of those screens will be illustrated to show
all of the parameters available. To locate information
pertaining to any specific parameter, use the index at the
end of this manual to locate a keyword, then view the
information on the page(s) indicated.

8
EXP I/O 1 AI1

The Expansion Input/Output module 1, analog input #1

is configured via this screen.

Present Value This variable displays the current

scaled value of the analog signal present on the analog
input number one.

Maximum & Cfg This parameter is used to select the

analog input’s maximum reading at maximum input, the
location of the decimal point (divide by 10, 100 or 1000)
and the engineering units (psi, amps, volts etc.) Move
the cursor to highlight this parameter and press the
ENTER key. The highlight cursor will change to appear
like the illustration at left. At this point, use the left/right
arrow keys to move the decimal point left or right as
required, and press ENTER again. The highlight cursor
will change to show a screen similar to the center
illustration at left and displays the maximum
value of the analog input. Use the up/down or left/right
arrow keys to adjust the maximum reading to the
required value, then press ENTER again. The cursor will
change once more and allow the user to select
engineering units applicable to the analog input. At this
point use the up/down arrow keys to scroll through the
available engineering units until the desired one
appears, then press ENTER to finalize the configuration.
The illustration at bottom left shows the units being
displayed as psi.

Instrument Typ Selects which type of analog signal is

applied to the input terminals. Two current inputs: 4-
20mA & 10-50mA and two voltage inputs: 0-10Vdc & 0-
5Vdc are supported. Set this parameter to the type of
signal input and place the two shunt blocks on the
appropriate pins located on the right side of the front
face plate of the unit. The 4-20mA position is set for both
current types and 0-10V is set for both voltage types.
Note: In order to display the correct value of a gauge with
a 10-50mA output, add a 133 ohm, 1% parallel shunt
resistor across the analog input terminals.

Minimum Rding This parameter is used to select the

analog input’s minimum reading at minimum input, and
is useful for configuring to gauges that have values not
equal to zero at minimum output. For example, if a 4-
20mA pressure transmitter is rated for 1000 to 5000 psi,
a 4 mA signal corresponds to 1000 psi. If a 1000 psi
offset is not entered here, when the transmitter sends a
4 mA signal, the present value displayed will equal zero,
not 1000.

Average Fast This value represents the average signal

presented to the analog input during the previous
second.

9
Slo Avg Tm Prd Slow Average Time Period sets the
length of time used to average the readings to determine
the value shown in the next parameter, Average Slow.

Average Slow The analog input present on this input is

sampled and averaged over the time period specified in
the previous parameter. This averaged value is
displayed in this parameter.

Maximum The maximum variable records the

maximum value reached by the analog input since the
last user reset.

Minimum This parameter records the minimum value

reached by the analog input since the last user reset.

Rst Max & Min Press ENTER on this parameter to

reset the maximum and minimum values to zero.

RMS AC Input This value represents the calculated

root-mean-square value of the analog input when the
input has a repetitive amplitude varying signal. The
input cannot measure negative signals, so the “AC”
signal must have a DC offset great enough such that the
most negative or lowest part of the input signal does not
go below 0 VDC.

Input Frequency When the analog signal has an

alternating amplitude that can be calculated as an AC
signal, this parameter will display the input signal’s
equivalent AC frequency.

Hi Thld Setup Move the cursor to this location and

press the ENTER key to open the High Threshold Alarm
Setup screen. This setup screen provides access to the
high threshold alarm configuration pertaining to the
signal present on analog input #1 of this I/O module.
Refer to the screen description below for more
information.

Lo Thld Setup Move the cursor to this location and

press the ENTER key to open the Low Threshold Alarm
Setup screen. This setup screen provides access to the
low threshold alarm configuration pertaining to the signal
present on analog input #1 of this I/O module. Refer to
the screen description below for more information.

controls whether the GCS controller will alarm and
shutdown the attached motor when the Present Value of
the analog input #1 goes below the Low Threshold
value.

Lo Thld Lk Enb Low Threshold Lockout Enabled

controls whether the controller will “lockout” and prevent
further automatic restart attempts when the GCS host
controller shuts down the motor because of a Low
Threshold alarm.

Lo Thld Byp Dly Low Threshold Bypass Delay sets the

number of seconds that the GCS controller will ignore a
Low Threshold alarm condition that is present at start-up
time or that occurs during this time delay.

Lo Thld Sd Dly Low Threshold Shutdown Delay sets

the number of seconds that the controller will ignore a
Low Threshold alarm condition that exists while the
motor is running but only after the Low Threshold
Bypass Delay timer has expired.

Aux Rstrt Parms When set to “YES”, the Auxiliary

Restart Parameters setpoint causes the GCS controller
to use the restart parameters listed below when it shuts
down due to an Expansion I/O 1 Analog Input 1 Low
Threshold alarm. If this parameter is set to “NO”, the
controller will use the global restart parameters when
performing an automatic restart. The global restart
parameters are set from the GCS controller SETUP
menus.

Allowed Starts Allowed starts controls how many

automatic restarts will be allowed when the controller
has shutdown due to an Expansion I/O 1 Analog Input 1
Low Threshold alarm and the Aux Rstrt Parms has been
set to “YES”.

Restart Delay Restart Delay controls the length of time

the controller will wait before attempting to restart the
motor when it was shut down due to an Expansion I/O 1
Analog Input 1 Low Threshold alarm and the Aux Rstrt
Parms has been set to “YES”.

EXP I/O 1 AI2

The Expansion Input/Output module 1, analog input #2

is configured via this screen. The configuration of this
input is identical to the procedure for analog input #1.
Please refer to the preceding section, EXP I/O 1 AI1, for
detailed instructions.

12
EXP I/O 1 AO1

This screen provides access to the calibration and

configuration menu pertaining to Analog output #1. This
output is a 4-20mA current loop type. It is factory
calibrated to the 4 mA (zero) and the 20 mA (max)
signal levels.

Present Value This parameter displays the current

value of the analog output port #1. The output value can
be manually set or can follow a system analog or digital
as setup under the Signal Source parameter.

Maximum & Cfg This parameter is used to select the

analog output’s maximum reading at maximum output,
the location of the decimal point (divide by 10, 100 or
1000) and the engineering units (psi, amps, volts etc.)
For a step by step illustration of how to set this
parameter, review the Maximum & Cfg portion of the
Analog input #1 section of this manual.

Minimum Rding This parameter is used to define the

minimum reading, in other words, to set the offset of the
zero reading of the analog output. If a 4 mA (or zero
output) corresponds to a non-zero value, then that value
should be entered into this parameter. For example, if
the analog output is used to signal a 1000 to 5000 psi
signal, the 4mA output condition means 1000 psi, not 0
psi. If 1000 is entered into this offset parameter, the
Present Value parameter will display 1000 psi at a 4mA
output.

Signal Source This parameter is used for displaying

and setting the analog output port to follow a system
analog or digital. Once a system parameter has been
selected, the max and min reading including proper
decimal point placement and units are automatically
setup as per the selected signal source.

EXP I/O 1 AO2

This screen provides access to the calibration and

configuration menu pertaining to Analog output #2. This
output is a 4-20mA current loop type and is factory
calibrated to the 4 mA (zero) and the 20 mA (span)
signal levels. All adjustments and calibrations to this
output are identical to those for Analog output #1, as
explained in the preceding section. Please refer to that
section for detailed information pertaining to these
adjustments.

13
EXP I/O 1 DI1

This screen provides access to the configuration menu

for digital input #1. Digital input #2 and #3 are identical
to this menu, therefore only digital Input #1 will be
covered in detail. All three digital inputs accept the
following input signals: A short circuit or closed
contacts between the digital input and the digital input
common terminal or a voltage signal of 5 to 120 Volts,
AC or DC.

Present Status This parameter indicates the current

status of the digital input. A status of 0(zero) indicates
that no digital signal is present at the input terminal.
When a signal is present, this variable will change to a
1(one).

Actv Alm State This Active Alarm State variable allows

the user to select which input state will be considered as
an alarm. Since alarm sensors or transmitters can be of
a normally open or normally closed type, this variable
permits the user to instruct the GCS controller which
state is the alarm condition. When the present status of
this input matches this variable and the alarm is
enabled, the GCS host will begin to process a shutdown.

Pls Accumulator The pulse accumulator input counts

the number of OFF to ON or 0 to 1 transitions occurring
on this digital input. For example, this can be used to
accumulate the output pulses of a measurement
instrument, such as a flow meter, that indicates a
specific volume of measured flow per pulse. These
pulses may be of any valid signal type itemized above at
a repetition rate of up to 1 Hz.

Alarm Enable Alarm Enable controls whether the GCS

controller will cause an alarm and begin to process a
shutdown when the Present Status variable matches the
Active Alarm State setting..

Lockout Enable Lockout Enable controls whether the

controller will “lockout” and prevent further automatic
restart attempts when the GCS host controller shuts
down the motor because of a Digital Input #1 alarm.

Bypass Delay Bypass Delay sets the number of

seconds that the GCS controller will ignore a Digital
Input #1 alarm condition that is present at motor start-up
time or that occurs during this time delay.

Shutdown Delay Shutdown Delay sets the number of

seconds that the controller will ignore a Digital Input #1
alarm condition that exists while the host’s motor is
running but only after the Bypass Delay timer has
expired.

14
Aux Rstrt Parms When set to “YES”, the Auxiliary
Restart Parameters setpoint causes the GCS controller
to use the restart parameters listed below when it shuts
down due to an Expansion I/O 1 Digital Input #1 alarm.
If this parameter is set to “NO” , the controller will use
the global restart parameters when performing an
automatic restart. The global restart parameters are set
from the GCS controller SETUP menus.

Allowed Starts Allowed starts controls how many

automatic restarts will be allowed when the controller
has shutdown due to an Expansion I/O 1 Digital Input
#1 alarm and the Aux Rstrt Parms has been set to
“YES”.

Restart Delay Restart Delay controls the length of time

the controller will wait before attempting to restart the
motor when it was shut down due to an Expansion I/O 1
Digital Input #1 alarm and the Aux Rstrt Parms has
been set to “YES”.

EXP IO 1 DI2

This screen provides access to the configuration menu

for digital input #2. Digital input #2 and #3 are identical
to this menu, therefore only digital Input #1 is covered in
detail. Please refer to the preceding section EXP IO 1
DI1 for detailed information regarding configuration of
this input.

EXP IO 1 DI3

This screen provides access to the configuration menu

for digital input #3. Digital input #2 and #3 are identical
to this menu, therefore only digital Input #1 is covered in
detail. Please refer to the preceding section EXP IO 1
DI1 for detailed information regarding configuration of
this input.

EXP IO 1 DO1

This screen accesses the parameters associated with

the digital output #1 on the GCS Expansion Module.
Each Expansion Module contains three digital outputs
consisting of dry contact relays. Only digital output #1 is
described here in detail. Digital output #1 is labeled
Relay #1 on the unit’s faceplate and has terminals that
connect to the normally open (N.O.), normally closed
(N.C.) and relay common contacts. Digital output #2
(Relay #2 ) and #3 (Relay #3) only provide terminals for
the normally open (N.O.) terminals. All three relays are
rated for operation at up to 10A / 250VAC.

Note: Connected across the two contact outputs of digital

output #1 are arc-suppressing snubber components for

15
use in the application of interfacing to a high energy
contactor coil.
These snubber components contain a small amount of
leakage current which can be noticeable if the digital
output #1 contacts are used for switching 120V LED type
panel lights.

Present Status This parameter displays the status of

the relay contacts representing digital output #1. When
the status is “open”, the normally open contacts are
open, the normally closed contacts are closed. When the
status is “close”, the normally open contacts will close
and the normally closed contacts will be opened. The
parameter can be changed manually or under user
program control via the Programmable Logic Functions
available in the GCS host device.

Pulse Count When a non-zero number is entered into

this variable, the relay contacts will pulse or, open and
close the specified number of times. The rate at which
the contacts open and close is set by the following
parameter.

Flash Rate The flash rate parameter controls the rate

at which the relay contacts will open and close when a
non-zero pulse count is entered into the preceding
parameter, Pulse Count. The maximum frequency of
flash rate supported is 1 Hz. (cycle per second).

EXP IO 1 DO2

This screen accesses the parameters associated with

the digital output #2 on the GCS Expansion Module. The
parameter settings for this output are identical to the
settings for Digital input #1. Please refer to the EXP IO
1 DO1 section of this manual for detailed information.

EIA RS-422/485 signaling specification. This signal type
provides inherently high noise immunity, but can still be
degraded under severe electrical noise environments.
The induced and reflected noise can be kept to a
minimum by simply terminating the two opposite ends of
the transmission bus wires with suitable resistors. Only

end of the CITIBus line, do not connect the jumpers on
these pins. The jumpers are always installed (or un-
installed) in pairs.

Analog Input Configuration

The GCS Expansion I/O Module’s analog inputs can be

configured to accept either a 4-20mA current loop signal
or a 0-10VDC voltage signal. The jumpers accessible

hardware for one or the other type of signal. To
configure current loop signals, place both of the jumpers
associated with that input to the 4-20mA location. The

4-20mA for a 4-20mA input and Analog input #2 for a 0-10VDC
0-10V signal. Be certain to also set the instrument type in the
software configuration to be of the same type as the
hardware configuration. The sample Analog input #1
setup screen shows the Instrument Type set to 4-20mA.
