BASIC ECDIS FUNCTIONS

Mouse buttons

In the lower part of the sidebar are 3 boxes. These 3 boxes is referring to your mouse
buttons; e.g. left box is the left mouse button; the centre button is the scroll wheel and
the right box is the right mouse button.

• When you scroll the wheel the buttons changes value; e.g. Chart menu becomes
Range + or Standard display depending if you scroll up or down
• DON’T PUT THE CURSOR INSIDE THE BOXES TO USE THE SHORTCUT

SAVING ROUTE PLAN, USER CHARTS AND NOTES

• The FURUNO ECDIS has AUTO SAVE, e.g. you don’t have to safe anything
• BUT every time you closes the ROUTE PLAN, USER CHARTS, NOTES or FUNC-
TION KEYS you must click in ENABLE CHANGES when you open the file again

CLOSING A MENU

• You can close menus when you click on X


• Or by clicking on CLOSE
• Allways close a menu before you open a nother menu

Planning a route

• Click PLAN on the Control head to open the planning tools


• Click the submenu (►)
• Click CREATE and name the route then push enter and ok
• Please observe that color changes before moving the cursor
• Click ENABLE CHANGES
• Use left mouse button to insert the first waypoint
• Continue to use left mouse button to insert way points
• To move a waypoint, position your cursor over the waypoint and hold the left mouse
button down and move the waypoint

Ship and route parameters

The basic ship and route parameters is located in SHIP AND ROUTE
PARAMETERS.

• Click MENU and then INITIAL SETTINGS


• In NAVIGATIONAL PARAMETERS open SHIP AND ROUTE PARAMETERS
• For the ship you can insert height, speed and draught
• You can correct the gyro with speed/latitude
• For the route it is possible to change the channel limitation, Safe margin and the
values for waypoint approach and waypoint prewarn

CHECKING FOR ALERTS

• Open the ROUTE PLAN


• Click the ALERTS page and set the SAFETY CONTOUR, in the chart any alerts will
be shown in RED, the area where you are safe will be shown in ORANGE
• You can always remove or add additional ALERTS and INDICATIONS but not the
SAFETY CONTOUR
• Open the CHECK page
• Click START, if you have any alerts you must modify the ROUTE

PRINTING

• To print a hardcopy; open ROUTE PLAN and click ► and choose between
REPORT, FULL WPT REPORT or PASSAGE PLAN and push PRINT
• Click X to close the menu

FROM PLAN TO SAIL

• When you have CHECKED the ROUTE PLAN, you are ready to sail
• Click ► and the push EXCHANGE WITH MONITOR
• Close the PLAN menu on X

Change name

• You must unselect the route plan, note oruser chart before renaming, push PLAN
• Click ► and then UNSELECT
• Click RECORD and then BACK UP AND RESTORE
• In CATEGORY choose ROUTEPLANS, NOTE or USERCHART
• In the box under HARDDISK find your route and push RENAME
• Write the new name and click enter and ok
BACKUP ON EXTERNAL DRIVE

• Click RECORD and then BACK UP AND RESTORE


• In CATEGORY choose ROUTEPLANS
• In BACKUP FORMAT choose ANTS
• In BACK UP DIVICE choose external DRIVE
• Click BACK UP

FROM EXTERNAL DRIVE TO ECDIS

• Click RECORD and then BACK UP AND RESTORE


• In CATEGORY choose ROUTEPLANS
• In BACKUP FORMAT choose ANTS
• In BACK UP DIVICE choose external DRIVE
• In the box under BACK UP DEVICE, find your route and push RESTORE, now you
have taken your copy on the USB stick and put into the hard disk

ROUTE PLAN TO NOTEPAD OR EXCEL

• Click RECORD
• Click BACKUP AND RESTORE
• In CATEGORY choose ROUTEPLANS
• Find your ROUTE PLAN in HARDDISK
• In BACKUP FORMAT choose ASCII FULL
• In BACK UP DIVICE choose external DRIVE
• Click BACKUP
• Close the BACKUP AND RESTORE menu
• Take your USB stick to your office computer and load your file into the computer
• The file is in Notepad format and from is format you can copy it in other formats
such as Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Word

SENSORS

• Click sensor on the control head


• Use ►to changes the page
• On the SPD/CRS page is log and heading information
• On the POSN page is information about position and Kalman filter
• On the OTHER page is information about wind, echo sounder, AIS and current
• On the RECORD page the operator can record the position of his vessel in the
VOYAGE LOG and on the chart by LOP, GPS, DR, visual, astronomical or MFDF
• On the COUND page is the distance counter and trip counter, both over ground and
through water
CHART DISPLAY

• Scroll the wheel and find CHART DISPLAY or push MENU and then CHART DIS-
PLAY
• IMO BASE, IMO STANDARD and IMO ALL OTHER is located in the submenu (►)
• On CHART page is located Shallow contour, safety depth, safety contour and deep
contour, which must be set before the vessel starts a voyage
• The shallow contour is the dark blue or green color, here the vessel will run
aground
• The safety depth makes the spot soundings grey or black, black is danger and grey
is safe
• The safety contour is the light blue, this is your draft + under keel clearance
• The deep contour is grey and this is where you can expect squat
• White is where you are safe

• In the simple two color we only use safety depth and deep contour and white is go
or safe and blue is no go

• In multi colors we use all contours and the depth

SYMBOL DISPLAY

• Scroll the wheel and find SYMBOL DISPLAY or open the MENU
• GENERAL
• On the TRACKING page you decide whether to see own ship past track, target past
position and events
• On the TARGET page you can change color, size and ROT for targets
• On the MARINER page you set up what see in notes, user chart and manual
updates
• On the ROUTE page you set up your route display, during planning and monitoring

NAVMARK

• Scroll the wheel and find NAVMARKS


• You can use REF POINT, VRM and EBL
• When you click the right mouse button the REF POINT changes position from ships
position to cursor position
• In NAVMARK you also find PARALLEL INDEX
• Close NAVMARKS on X
CHART HANDLING

• Scroll the wheel and find CHART MENU


• Open the Chart Catalogue, what colors is the charts? Are they up to date?
• Close the Chart Catalogue on X
• Insert the CD
• Open CHART MENU again and push LOAD AND UPDATE CHARTS
• Click FROM CDROM
• Choose LOAD SELECTORS; PERMIT and MISSING ONLY
• Choose NAVIGATION PURPOSE; choose all
• Push LOAD
• SENC conversion is AUTOMATIC
• When the conversion is finish; push X
• Click X to close the LOAD AND UPDATE menu

CHART PERMIT

• Scroll the wheel and find CHART MENU


• Click CHART PERMIT
• To load a new PERMIT, the best result obtained when you delete the old permit first
• SELECT ALL and then REMOVE
• Click LOAD FILE
• Choose external DRIVE
• Click on ENC.TXT and LOAD
• Close CHART PERMIT menu on X

ANCHOR WATCH

• Click MENU and then ANCHOR WATCH


• Choose the DRAG CIRCLE, mush be between 0.01 and 9.99 NM
• Click DROP ANCHOR
• Click START ANCHOR WATCH
• Click STOP ANCHOR WATCH
• Click CLEAR ANCHOR then anchor is up and home

NOTES

• Click Notes on the sidebar


• Click PLAN
• Click CREATE and name the file then push enter and ok
• Click ENABLE CHANGES
• Use left mouse button to fix your NOTE on a specific position in the chart
• The RANGE mush be between 0.1 to 100 NM
• In Description, write what to remember
• Click ► and select GO MONITOR MODE
• Click MOVE PLAN TO MONITOR
USER CHART

• Click USER CHART on the sidebar


• Click PLAN
• Click CREATE and give the file a name, then push enter and ok
• Click ENABLE CHANGES
• Choose between POINT, LINE, AREA, SYMBOL or TIDAL
• Move the cursor into in chart and push LEFT MOUSE BUTTON to insert object
• Click ► and then GO MONITOR MODE
• Click MOVE PLAN TO MONITOR

VOYAGE LOG AS DOKUMENTATION

• It is not possible to change the data inside the VOYAGE LOG


• BUT you can add a comment in DESCRIPTION
• Push RECORD and then VOYAGE LOG
• Click ENABLE CHANGES
• Highlight the first and last point to be shown in your USER CHART
• Click ► and SAVE AS USER CHART and name the USER CHART
• Close the LOG FILE
• Open USER CHART on the sidebar
• Push PLAN and then SELECT
• Find your USER CHART and click OK
• The USER CHART is shown with orange dots

NAVTEXT

• Push MENU and then NAVTEX MESSAGE


• Choose FILTER; ALL, READ or UNREAD or by name
• To delete the message on the ECDIS, push ► and DELETE
• (Please note that this only delete the message on the ECDIS and not on the Nav-
text)

AIS

• Push MENU and then AIS OWN SHIP INFO


• Click ENABLE CHANGES
• Edit the VOYAGE INFO and/or OWN SHIP INFO
• Close the AIS OWN SHIP INFO menu
SAFETY MESSAGE

• Push MENU and then SAFETY MESSAGE


• Click ENABLE CHANGES
• Choose FILTER, e.g. RECEIVED or SEND
• Choose ADRESSED TO MMSI or BROADCAST TO ALL
• Write MMSI number or send to all
• Choose SAFETY MESSAGE or BINARY MESSAGE
• Choose channel; e.g. DON’T CARE CHANNEL
• Click EDIT MESSAGE and write the text
• Click END EDIT
• Click ► and then SEND MESSAGE
• When finish close SAFETY MESSAGE on X
