Hoist Capacity

The document calculates the minimum lifting capacity required for a hoisting arrangement of a gate. It determines components that contribute to the total lifting force, including the gate weight, roller friction, seal friction, buoyant force, and downpull force. It sums these components to find the total lifting force required is 301.94 tonnes and recommends sizing the hoisting arrangement to lift at least 362 tonnes to allow for a 20% safety margin.

Hoist capacity

Minimum lifting capacity of hoisting

arrangement is found out by summing of

1 Self weight of gate

2 Roller friction
3 Side seal friction
4 Top seal friction
5 Buoyant force
6 Reserve Capacity
8 Total weight of gate 68.00

1 Self weight of gate = 68.00 tonnes

2 Roller friction
Total water thrust ( P ) = 2193.4 tonnes
Radius of wheel ( R) = 26.5 Cm
Fa = 0.015
Fr = 0.1
Effective radius
of bearing ( r ) = 13.5 Cm
Roller friction = P (Faxr+Fr)
R
= 25.03796 tonnes
3 Side seal friction
Co efficient of seal friction ( f ) = 1.20 (Rubber seal on stainless for moving)
= 1.50 (Rubber seal on stainless for starting)
= 0.15 (Fluorocarbon on stainless steel for moving)
= 0.20 (Fluorocarbon on stainless steel for starting)
Length of side seals ( l ) = 765.00 Cm
2
Intensity of pressure head (h) = 5.12 Kg/Cm
Distance b/w seal to (b) = 3.0 Cm
Side seal friction = 2 x l x b xh xf
= 3.52512 tonnes
4 Top seal friction
Co efficient of topseal friction ( f ) = 1.20 (Rubber seal on stainless for moving)
= 1.50 (Rubber seal on stainless for starting)
= 0.15 (Fluorocarbon on stainless steel for moving)
= 0.20 (Fluorocarbon on stainless steel for starting)
Length of top seal = 765 Cm
2
Intensity of pressure head (h) = 5.005 Kg/Cm
Distance b/w seal to (b) = 3.0 Cm

Top seal friction = l x b xh xf

= 1.722971 tonnes
5 Buoyant force
Buoyant Force = (wt. of gate x density of water)
Density of gate material

= 8.66242 tonnes

6 Calculation of downpull forces

Downpull for FRL condition:It is reported in many model studies & research papers that the value of Downpull
remain maximum at about 40% of the gate opening
When gate is lifted by 2.2m i.e. 40% of the full oening of 5.5m above the sill level the downpull shall be maximum
for these gates.
Downward water load on the gate top (48.5x2.1** x 7.6 ) x .92* = 712.14 tonnes
*(0.92 is the Down pull coefficient (Kt) at 40% of gate opening – Refer Fig – 2(a)
from paper of Mr. B.T.A. Sagar).
**Approximate width of groove over the top of gate.
Upward water load on bottom seal of gate (54 x2.1 x 7.6 x .59 = 508.49 tonnes
**(0.59 is the uplift coefficient (Kb) at 40% of gate opening – Refer curves Fig – 2(a)
from paper of Mr. B.T.A. Sagar).
***Approximate Thickness of gate at bottom
Maximum Down pull force on the gate =712.14 – 508.49 = 0.8 203.65 tonnes
Total lifting force required
1 Self weight of gate = 68.00 tonnes
2 Roller friction = 25.04 tonnes
3 Side seal friction = 3.53 tonnes
4 Top seal friction = 1.72 tonnes
5 Downpull forces = 203.65 tonnes
Total lifting force required = 301.94 tonnes

Check for lowering

1 Roller friction = 25.04 tonnes
2 Side seal friction = 3.53 tonnes
3 Top seal friction = 1.72 tonnes
4 Buoyant force = 8.66 tonnes
Total = 38.95 tonnes
Check for lowering = 29.05 tonnes

Closing Force
seating force required to close the
gateunder self weight = 1000 kg/m
Length of bottom seal = 7.65 m
Closing force required = 7.65 tonnes < 29.05 tonnes
Gate is Self Closing
Total lifting force required = 301.94 tonnes
Taking 20% extra margin = 362 tonnes
