Ethics and Social responsibility

After studying this chapter, are you more likely or less likely to buy fair trade coffee? Why
or why not?
After this week’s reading assignment, the concept of fair trade is now very clear to me. Fair trade
is really impacting the life of farmers or producers. In most of the countries, it is very important
for farmers to be paid well based on the work they are doing. A payment that can help the
farmers sustain their needs and be happy with the work they are doing. When fair trade was
created, its aim was to make sure that the agricultural employees in the developing countries had
equal chances to enjoy the advantages that farmers or employees from industrialized countries
were enjoying. As part of this, coffee farmers are mentioned on the forefront because coffee is
among the greatest product that is mentioned in the economic category (Jimenez & Pulos,
2016).
Fair trade helps one to get the details that are involved in producing a product. It is responsible in
ensuring the packed product is of the required quality and it is the right product to be consumed.
This will always give me a chance to get the right coffee and of he required quality. Sometimes
the price of the coffee doesn’t matter to me so much so long us it is the best quality I can have.
After reading about fair trade, I will be more cautious about the coffee I purchase to make sure it
is fair trade certified. Having this certification will guarantee me that it has undergone the right
process and it is the best to be consumed.
Is there another way of achieving the objectives of improving the lives of developing-
country farmers and producers than the Fair Trade approach? Describe at least one
option.
Fair trade has done its best in improving the lives of farmers in the developing countries. The
work that the government was not able to handle, now the farmers are smiling due to the impact
they have had from fair trade. I wouldn’t think that there could be a better option than what fair
trade has already done and is doing. The only option I can say is to create awareness in countries
where fair trade is not yet there so that they can implement it fully. Every nation that has been
having problems with farmers exploitation has to emulate fair trade and strengthen it so that it
can build more farmers and ensure quality products are in the market. Another option is to
reduce the gap that was there in the market where there were several challenges in how the
products reach the market. As much as fair trade is really trying, the government should also
improve the infrastructure so that these products reaches the market with ease.
Why do consumers buy Fair Trade products? List a few reasons and analyze each of them.
The obvious reasons why consumer buy fair trade products is the quality. Fair trade has really
ensured that the products that reach the market are of good quality and free from genetically
modified products. This leads to a second reasons where customers are much concerned of the
health benefits they get from the products they buy. They tend to buy more of natural grown
products free from pesticides that they fear they may cause health problems to them and they will
buy more of fair-trade products since they are clean. Also, customers will buy a product that has
been produced in a conducive clean environment. Fair trade has made it possible for a clean
environment for products to be produced in and many people will have this as reason to purchase
fair trade certified products.
Conclusion
Fair trade is of great importance in the agricultural sector mostly in the growing countries. It has
made sure that farmers enjoy what they do because they know that they are well taken care of.
Also, the products that are created at the end are of good quality which makes the market for the
products to continue growing. It also make sure the working environment for farmers is
conducive for them. While the working environment is conducive, farmers are appreciated well
to the work they do and hence they are able to sustain their families well. They always say, when
the farmer is happy then the whole nation is happy.
