LECTURE 2 OF 4
TOPIC : 5.0 FUNCTIONS AND
GRAPHS
SUBTOPIC : 5.2 Composite Functions
LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the lesson, students should be able to a) represent a composite function using an arrow diagram. b) find composite function. c) find one of the functions when the composite and the other functions are given. Consider two functions f(x) and g(x). We define meaning that the output values of the function g are used as the input values for the function f. This can be represented in an arrow diagram.
A B C Note that ( f o g)(x) ≠ f(x)g(x)
Similarly, we define meaning that
the output values of the function f are used as the input values for the function g. This can be represented in an arrow diagram. A B C Example 1 The function f and g are defined by and find Solution Finding A Functions When The Composite And The Other functions Are Given If and either f(x) or g(x) are given, the other function can be found be doing some algebraic modification.
If and f(x) given, g(x) can be found by
substituting it into x of f(x) and then equating with the given If and g(x) given, f(x) can be found by letting find f(u) and substituting x in terms u. Later find f(x). Example 2
