HOW TO USE THIS DOCUMENT

ABOUT THE INFORMATION SHEET:

Information Sheet is a form of instruction sheet used to provide
and transfer knowledge-based information needed to achieve learning
outcomes. Information could be about new procedure, technique or
technical data needed to do an assigned job. This sheet is prepared by
the trainer if there are no resources available.

It has three parts: 1.) Learning Objectives, 2.) Introduction or

Overview, and 3.) Body or Text. Learning Objectives defines the
expected aim as the result of instruction. Introduction or overview
presents the general idea of the lesson and integrates previous, current
and next learning content. Body or Text contains knowledge and skills
needed to develop certain skills.

GUIDELINES IN USING THIS FORM:

 Information should be recent, precise, and suitable to the interest
and reading level of the students.
 Make the information sheet eye-catching and easy to read. The
layout, illustration and reproduction should be clear and attractive
in appearance. This sheet, commonly used in self-paced learning,
should persuade trainees to read and comprehend the material.
 Supplement words with illustration and diagram for clarity.
 Material used should be usable and easy to file, and then have it
punched for filing purposes.
 Acknowledge the sources of information. Note on the sheet if much
of the material is taken from it because doing this will prevent
plagiarism (or use others’ idea without giving credit to the author).

INFORMATION SHEET 3.1-2
Network Operating System

Learning Objective:

After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:

1. Know what is a Network Operating Systems and its features

2. Determine the different Network Operating Systems

Introduction:
Specialized software called a network operating System (NOS) controls resource
sharing and communication within a computer network. It enables seamless
data transfer and connectivity between networked devices.
NOS offers crucial features including user administration, security, file, and
print sharing. Between network hardware and applications, it serves as a
connecting layer that allows devices to communicate using standard protocols.
Organizations can increase productivity and gain centralized control over their
network environment by deploying a NOS.

Key features of NOS
Wide-ranging features provided by NOS improve resource sharing,
communication, and management inside a computer network. Here are some
essential characteristics that make NOS a crucial part of network
administration and cooperation.

 Network communication: With the help of NOS, devices within the

network can communicate with each other. It facilitates them by sharing
files and supporting secure data transfer.
 User authentication security: To maintain safe access to network
resources, it controls user authentication and access control. Features
like usernames, passwords, access levels, and permissions are included.
 File and printer sharing services: Within a network, most of the time,
the devices are required to share files or use a printer. It allows the
devices to share files by providing file sharing, resource sharing, and
printer spooling.
 Network management: It provides reliable communication within the
network by managing resources and managing access, permissions, and
policies.

Types of Network Operating Systems

There are mainly two types of networks, one is peer-to-peer and another is
client/server. Now let’s see each type one by one.

 Peer to Peer: Peer-to-peer network operating systems allow the sharing of

resources and files with small-sized networks and having fewer resources.
In general, peer-to-peer network operating systems are used on LAN.

Client/Server Client/Server

In a Peer to Peer Network, Each client acts also as a

server.

 Client/server: Client-server network operating systems provide users
access to resources through the central server. This NOS is too expensive
to implement and maintain. This operating system is good for the big
networks which provide many services.

Server Client

In a Client/Server Network, the server acts as a central

hub, providing services to the client or multiple clients.

Examples of Network Operating Systems

1. Microsoft Windows Server
Windows Server is a line of Microsoft
operating systems (OSes) comprised of
extremely powerful machines. Windows
Server was first launched in April 2003.
The server handles the administrative
group-related activities on a network. It
organizes, stores, sends, and receives
files from devices connected to a
network.

2. UNIX/Linux

UNIX is an operating system which was

first developed in the 1960s, and has
been under constant development ever
since. By operating system, we mean
the suite of programs which make the
computer work. It is a stable, multi-
user, multi-tasking system for servers,
desktops and laptops.

There are many Network Operating Systems, but on this

module, we will be focusing mainly on the Microsoft
Windows Server Operating System.
