Access/start authorization
Caution!

Note:

„ Familiarity with the function and operation of the


access/start authorization system is essential in the
event of customer complaints.

DTC recognition and display

The access/start authorization system is equipped with on-


board diagnostics, which simplifies faultfinding.

Performing on-board diagnostics: Use the "Guided Fault


Finding" function of the Diagnostic Operation System VAS
5051 .

Ignition key lock, overriding

In this vehicle the ignition key lockup is electromechanically


released.

The ignition key cannot be removed as long as the ignition


is switched on, and the automatic transmission gear
selector is not set to P.

The ignition key lock assures that the ignition key is not
inadvertently removed.

If the voltage supply in the vehicle has been interrupted,


the ignition key can be removed by operating the override
button.

- Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.

- Press the push-button - arrow - with a screwdriver and


hold it down.

- The ignition key may now be removed.

Access/Start Authorization Switch E415

The Access/Start Authorization Switch E415 (ignition


starter) has an electronic terminal control.

All faults related to the access/start authorization switch


(ignition starter switch) are output by the Access/Start
Control Module J518 .

Access/Start Authorization Switch E415 , removing and


installing

Note:

„ The access/start authorization switch with integrated


locking cylinder is a single unit and must be replaced
as a unit.

Removing:

- Remove terminal clamps from the battery 27-3,


Battery, disconnecting and connecting .

- Remove steering column tube with steering column

Note:

„ Pull the steering column out only so far as to allow


the access/start authorization switch to be removed
and replaced.

- Use a small screwdriver to pry off the ring around the


switch.

- Insert the Lock cylinder wrench T10152 into the slots of


the mounting nut.

- Unscrew the mounting nut and reach into the instrument


panel opening and guide the access/start authorization
switch out.

- Pull the multi-connector off the switch.

Installing:

Install in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

- Hand-tighten the tightening nut of the switch using the


Lock cylinder wrench T10152 .

Adapting or coding the access/start authorization switch


after removal and replacement is not required.

Malfunction recognition and malfunction indicators:

Access/Start Control Module J518 is equipped with On


Board Diagnostics (OBD) which assists troubleshooting.

Use the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information


System VAS 5051 in the "Guided Fault Finding" function
for troubleshooting.

- Connect Diagnostic Operation System VAS5051A .

- In Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System


VAS 5051 , select operating mode "Guided Fault
Finding" .

- Via the "Go to" button, select "Function-/Component


selection" and the following menu points in sequence:

„ Body

„ Body-Interior; Repair

„ 01 - On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capable systems

„ Immobilizer

„ Electrical components

„ Access/Start Authorization Switch E415

The Access/Start Authorization Button E408 allows the


starting of the vehicle without actively using the ignition
key.

Access/Start Authorization Button E408 is equipped with

System VAS 5051 in the "Guided Fault Finding" function
for troubleshooting.

- Connect Diagnostic Operation System VAS5051A .

- In Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System


VAS 5051 , select "Guided Fault Finding" .

- Via the "Go to" button, select "Function-/Component


selection" and the following menu points in sequence:

„ Body

„ Body-Interior; Repair

Removing:

- Clear the front left footwell.

- Remove plug connector - 1 - from the control module.

- Loosen nuts - 2 - and remove the control module.

Installing:

Install in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

- Attach the battery terminal clamps. 27-3, Battery


terminal clamps, attaching .

Note:

„ The replacement access/start control module must


be coded 94-9, Access/start control module,
coding .

„ When disconnecting and connecting battery, the


procedure as described in the Repair Manual must
be followed.

„ No coding, basic setting or adaptation is necessary


when Access/Start Authorization Antenna (in rear
bumper) R136 is replaced. Erase any DTC entries in

DTC memory via "Guided Fault Finding" using


Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information system
VAS 5051A .

Removing:

- Remove rear bumper cover

- Disengage and disconnect harness connector - 1 - .

- Unscrew mounting bolts - arrows - and remove


Access/Start Authorization Antenna (in rear bumper) R136
- 2- .

Installing:

Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following:

- Install antenna with connector facing upward and tightly


screw with bolts into speed nuts.

- Tighten all threaded connections to specified tightening


torque 94-9, Access/Start Authorization Antennae,
tightening torques .

Luggage Compartment Access/Start Authorization Antenna


R137 , removing and installing

Luggage Compartment Access/Start Authorization Antenna


R137 is located on lower section of rear parcel shelf.

Note:

„ No coding, basic setting or adaptation is necessary


when Luggage Compartment Access/Start
Authorization Antenna R137 is replaced. Erase any
DTC entries in DTC memory via "Guided Fault
Finding" using Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and
Information system VAS 5051A .

Removing:

- Remove lower section of rear parcel shelf

- Disengage and disconnect harness connector - 1 - .

- Unscrew both mounting bolts - arrows - and remove

Installing:

Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following:

- Tighten all threaded connections to specified tightening


torque 94-9, Access/Start Authorization Antennae,
tightening torques .

Interior Access/Start Authorization Antenna 1 R138 , removing


and installing

Interior Access/Start Authorization Antenna 1 R138 is


located under switch cover in center console at front.

Note:

„ No coding, basic setting or adaptation is necessary


when Interior Access/Start Authorization Antenna 1
R138 is replaced. Erase any DTC entries in DTC
memory via "Guided Fault Finding" using Vehicle
Diagnosis, Testing and Information system VAS
5051A .

Removing:

- Remove switch cover

- Disengage and disconnect harness connector - 3 - .

- Unclip Interior Access/Start Authorization Antenna 1


R138 - 1 - from its securing mount - 2 - and remove it
from vehicle.

Installing:

Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following:

- When installing, insert Interior Access/Start Authorization


Antenna 1 R138 with rear side guide tab in first and then
engage it in switch cover.

Interior Access/Start Authorization Antenna 2 R139 , removing


and installing

Interior Access/Start Authorization Antenna 2 R139 is


located in center armrest cover of rear seat bench in the 4-
and 5-seater versions.

Note:

„ No coding, basic setting or adaptation is necessary


when Interior Access/Start Authorization Antenna 2
R139 is replaced. Erase any DTC entries in DTC
memory via "Guided Fault Finding" using Vehicle
Diagnosis, Testing and Information system VAS
5051A .

Removing:

Interior Access/Start Authorization Antenna 2 R139 is a


permanent component of center armrest cover of rear seat
bench in the 4- and 5-seater versions and cannot be
replaced separately. In the event of repairs, replace
complete rear center armrest.

4-seater:

- Remove rear center armrest

- Re-attach harness connector of Interior Access/Start


Authorization Antenna 2 R139 to connector bracket on
rear wall after connecting.

Interior Access/Start Authorization Antenna 3 R154 , removing


and installing

Interior Access/Start Authorization Antenna 3 R154 is


located in wiring on center tunnel at rear.

Note:

„ No coding, basic setting or adaptation is necessary


when Interior Access/Start Authorization Antenna 3
R154 is replaced. Erase any DTC entries in DTC
memory via "Guided Fault Finding" using Vehicle
Diagnosis, Testing and Information system VAS
5051A .

Removing:

4-seater:

- Remove center console extension

Repair Manual, Body Interior, Repair Group 68, storage


compartments, covers and panels; removing and installing
center console (4-seater)

- Clear vehicle floor in area of center tunnel far enough in


front of rear seat heel panel until wiring on center tunnel is
accessible.

5-seater:

- Clear vehicle floor in area of center tunnel far enough in


front of rear seat heel panel until wiring on center tunnel is
accessible.

- Unscrew both mounting bolts - 2 - and remove Interior


Access/Start Authorization Antenna 3 R154 - 3 - upward
from wiring - 1 - .

- Disengage and disconnect harness connector - 1 - and


remove Interior Access/Start Authorization Antenna 3
R154 - 3 - from vehicle.

Installing:

Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following:

Note:

„ Make sure that antenna electrical wire is not jammed


when installing.

- Tighten all threaded connections to specified tightening


torque 94-9, Access/Start Authorization Antennae,
tightening torques .
