ORDER OF

OPERATIONS

1
1. Work out the following: The order of operations is a set of rules that gives the
correct order of steps for doing a calculation.

 BIDMAS tells you the order to perform a

i. 𝟑 + 𝟓 × (𝟐 − 𝟏) = 8 calculation when there are different operations.

Applying the BIDMAS rule, you B:

should complete the
Brackets I:
calculation inside the baracket:
Indices D:
2-1 = 1, so,
Division
3+5x1
M:
applying BIDMAS,
Multiplication
multiplication must be
completed before addition.
So,  There is no priority between division
and multiplication; just follow the order
=3+5 
they appear.
There is no priority between addition
and subtraction; just follow the order
=8 they appear.

ii. 𝟐𝟑 + 𝟒 × 𝟐 − 𝟕
Applying BIDMAS, we evaluate the power first, so,
𝟐𝟑 = 𝟖
8+4x2-7
Applying BIDMAS, MULTIPLICATION has the priority
over addition and subtraction, (4 x 2 = 8), so
8+8–7
Addition and subtraction have the same priority, so:
16 – 7

2
=9

3
iii. (𝟓 + 𝟐)𝟐 ÷ 𝟕 = 𝟕
Following BIDMAS, we calculate everything inside the bracket:
5 + 2 = 7. So,
𝟕𝟐 ÷ 𝟗
Following BIDMAS, the power has a priority over the division. So,
49 ÷ 𝟕
=7
iv. 𝟏𝟎 − 𝟑 × (𝟖 ÷ 𝟒) + 𝟔 = 10
Applying BIDMAS, we evaluate first everything in the bracket:
𝟖 ÷ 𝟒 = 𝟐 so,
10 – 3 x 2 + 6
Multiplication has the priority over subtraction and addition:
3 x 2 = 6 so,
10 – 6 + 6
Subtraction and addition have the same priority:
10 – 6 = 4
4 + 6 = 10

v. 𝟐 × (𝟒 + 𝟑)𝟐 − 𝟓 = 93
2 x 𝟕𝟐– 5
2 x 49 – 5
98 – 5
= 93

4
vi. 𝟏𝟓 ÷ 𝟑 × −𝟐𝟐 + 𝟕 − 𝟏 = - 13
𝟏𝟓 ÷ 𝟑 × −𝟒 + 𝟕 − 𝟏
𝟓 × −𝟒 + 𝟕 − 𝟏
−𝟐𝟎 + 𝟕 − 𝟏
− 𝟏𝟑 − 𝟏
= −14

vii. (𝟗 − 𝟐) × 𝟒 ÷ 𝟐 + 𝟓 = 19

𝟕× 𝟒 ÷ 𝟐 + 𝟓
𝟕×𝟐 + 𝟓
𝟏𝟒 + 𝟓
= 𝟏𝟗

viii. 𝟐𝟑 + 𝟒 × 𝟐 − 𝟔 ÷ 𝟐
𝟖 +𝟒 × 𝟐 − 𝟔 ÷ 𝟐 Here, I did division before
multiplication. But of course, you
𝟖+ 𝟒 × 𝟐 − 𝟑 can do the multiplication before.
You will get the same answer.
𝟖+ 𝟖 − 𝟑 Check it by yourself.

𝟏𝟔 − 𝟑
= 𝟏𝟑

ix. (𝟕 + 𝟐)𝟐 × 𝟑 − 𝟏𝟐 ÷ 𝟒 = 𝟐𝟒𝟎

𝟗𝟐 × 𝟑 − 𝟏𝟐 ÷ 𝟒
Here, I did multiplication before
𝟖𝟏 × 𝟑 − 𝟏𝟐 ÷ 𝟒 division. But of course, you can
do the division before. You will
𝟐𝟒𝟑 − 𝟏𝟐 ÷ 𝟒 get the same answer. Check it by
𝟐𝟒𝟑 − 𝟑 yourself.
= 𝟐𝟒𝟎

5
x. 𝟕 + 𝟒 ÷ (−𝟐)𝟐 − 𝟏 = 𝟕
𝟕+ 𝟒 ÷ 𝟒− 𝟏
𝟕 +𝟏− 𝟏
𝟖−𝟏
=𝟕

2. Put one pair of brackets to make the following

correct. i. 5 + (6 × 3) - 4 ÷ 2 = 21

ii. 18 ÷ (2 × 4 – 7) = 18

iii. 9 × 2 + (15 ÷ 3) = 23

iv. 20 - 3 × 4 + (10 ÷ 2) = 13

v. 7 + (3 × 5) - 12 ÷ 4 = 19

vi. (𝟐𝟑 + 𝟒) × 𝟐 − 𝟔 ÷ 𝟐 = 𝟐𝟏

vii. (𝟓 × −𝟐)𝟐 − 𝟗 + 𝟖 ÷ 𝟒 = 𝟗𝟑

viii. 𝟑𝟐 + 𝟏𝟎 ÷ (𝟐 – 𝟒) = 𝟒
6
ix. 𝟐 × (−𝟒)𝟐 − 𝟓 ÷ 𝟓 + 𝟏 = 𝟑𝟐

x. 𝟕 + (𝟐𝟐 × 𝟑) − 𝟏𝟐 ÷ 𝟒 = 𝟏𝟔
