Ways to make new f riends

1 People say, ‘you can’t choose your family, but you can choose your friends’, and we know having friends makes life
better. But nobody teaches us how to make friends. Here are some tips on how to make new friends.

2 Ask questions to get to know the other person. Using open questions with words like ‘what’ and ‘why’ is good for
this because it allows the speaker to say more. Closed questions with ‘do’ or ‘did’ are usually easier to answer as they
only need a short ‘yes’ or ‘no’, but they can stop the conversation.

3 Be a good listener. If you listen carefully, you show the other person you are interested in what they are saying.
Don’t be impatient to speak and always respond to what the other person says. Use the echo technique which means
repeating part of what the other person says. If they say they like dancing, you could say ‘Dancing. Really!’ T his
encourages them to say more.

4 T ry to find common ground. Most people have friends who share similar interests. If the other person mentions
something that you are interested in, share your interest. It might be a type of music or a sport, but this could be
enough to create a lifelong friendship.

5 Say something nice. If you see the other person doing or wearing something that you like, pay them a compliment
such as ‘I really like your top’ or something positive like ‘I’ve really enjoyed our conversation’. Most people love to
receive compliments and they often lead to further conversation.

6 Make a plan to do something together. T his shows you are interested in continuing being friends. Exchange
numbers so you can keep in touch regularly and set a date to do an activity that you both enjoy.

7 Finally, don’t worry if not everyone wants to be your friend, it’s not about the number of people you know but the
quality of your relationships, so treat people well, always be kind and have fun!

10 Choose the correct option.

1 T he writer mentions the quote ‘you can’t choose your family, but you can choose your friends’

C to show that we can make friends with people that we like.
2 T he writer suggests a closed question
A will always get a negative answer.
B won’t help a conversation develop.
C is a better option because it is easier to ask.

3 T he writer says the echo technique

A is good to use if you are feeling impatient with the other person.
B involves repeating everything that the other person says.
C can make the other person want to continue talking.

4 What does the writer mean by ‘find common ground’?
