Present Simple Tense (បច្ចុបាបននកាលធមមតា)

Definition: (និយមន័យ)
The Simple Present Tense is used for an action happens again and again, that is a habit or true
about the world.

 Form:
1. Positive Form:
Subject + V + Object

Example:
 I play tennis.
 We usually eat rice with soup.
 She plays basketball every weekend.
 I always get up at haft past four every morning.

Third Person Singular


He
She comes from Cambodia.

Using verbs with third person singular (He, She, It)


(1.) We add “S” to the verbs that used with third person singular (He/She/It)
 He lives in Phnom Penh.
 She works in ABA bank.
 He speaks English.
 It sleeps under the table.
 He runs in the afternoon.

(2.) If a verb ends in S, SS, SH, CH, O, X… We add “ES”


 He washes his car every Sunday.
 She watches European football every night.
 She goes to work by bus every day.
 He teaches English
 She does homework.

(3.) If verb end in “Y” we change “Y” to “IES”


 He studies English and Japanese.
 She tries to study hard.
 He flies a kite.
 She cries a lot.
 He carries his basket.

Exceptional Case:
(4.) We do not change Y when the verbs end in vowel plus Y. we add only S.
 She plays tennis very well.
 He stays in Cambodia for two Months.
 She obeys the boss.

What is third person singular?


Third Person Singular is a person a thing or animal that we are talking about. (He, She, It)
Example: He, She, It, Mary, Seyha, ………… etc.

❖ Using:
1. Repeated action or habitual Action The present simple is used to express repeated or
habitual action that happens regularly. The action can be a habit, a hobby, daily events, and
scheduled event.
➢ He always cleans his teeth in the morning.
➢ She does not get up at 5 o’clock in the morning.
➢ What time dose the train leave?
➢ They usually eat breakfast at home.
➢ Jonh plays football in the evening.
➢ I sometime do my homework at night.
➢ My sister takes a batt every day.

2. Facts or Generalization, always true) The present simple is used to talk about the general
truth or always true which was true before, is true now, and will be true in the future.
➢ Every twelve months, the earth circles the sun.
➢ The sun does not rise in the west.
➢ A dog has four legs.
➢ The boat floats on the river.
➢ The policeman catches the thieves.
➢ Asian people have yellow skin.
➢ The earth goes around the sun.
➢ Teacher teaches the students.
➢ Two and Two are Four.

(3. Scheduled Event in the near future) The speaker Occasionally uses present simple to
talk about scheduled events in the near future: This is most commonly done when talking
about public transportation, but it can be used with other scheduled events as well.

 The train leaves tonight at 6 o’clock.


 The bus does not arrive at 11AM, It arrives at 11 PM.
 When do we board the plane?
 When does the class begin tomorrow?

2. Question form:
Do/Does + Subject + V + Object +?
Examples:
 Does she work in ABA bank?
 Do you like apple?
 When does the train usually leave?

How to make question in Present Simple.


❖ Simple Verb:
To make question we put “Do/Does” before Subject

I like movie?
we eat rice?
Do
you play card?
they drink?

he go to sleep at 9 o’clock?
Does she work in a bank?
it sleep under the table?

Q. Do you like noodle? A. Yes, I do.
Q. Do you eat pizza? A. No, I don’t
Q. Does she play card? A. Yes, she does.
Q. Does he smoke? A. No, he doesn’t.
Q. Do they drink beer? A. No, they don’t.
Q. Do we learn Chinese? A. No, we don’t.
Q. Do you go with me? A. Yes, we do.
Q. Does he play piano? A. Yes, he does.
Q. Do you love her? A. Yes, I do.
Q. Does it have four legs? A. No, it doesn’t

❖ Modal Verb:
How to make questions with Modal verbs we just put Modal verbs before subject.
Positive Questions
I am a student. Am I a student?
He can swim. Can He swim?
They must go. Must they go?
She is fat. Is she fat?

Questions and answers


The answers of the questions are followed by the modal verbs that use in the sentences.
Questions Answers
Am I a student? Yes, you are.
Can he swim? Yes, he can.
Must they go? Yes, they must.
Is she fat? No, she isn’t.
Will you go now? Yes, I will.
Shall we eat out? Yes, we shall.
Could you write? No, you couldn’t.

3. Negative form:
Subject + Do/Does + Not + V + Object
Example:
 She does not work in ABA bank.
 I do not like football.
 The train does not leave at 9 AM.

We put “don’t/doesn’t” before main verbs in sentences.

- He doesn’t brush his teeth in the afternoon.

- John doesn’t play football in the evening.
- I don’t like fish and beef.
- My brother doesn’t eat porridge.

 Modal Verbs.
We put “not” after modal verbs in the sentences.
Positive Negative
I am a journalist. I am not a journalist.
We can speak Spanish. We cannot speak Spanish.
You should go to bed. You should not go to bed.
She must finish work. She must not finish work.
He is a doctor. He is not a doctor.

• REMARKS:
 We usually use present simple with Adverb of frequency to talk about how often we do
something.
 I always get up at 4 o’clock in the morning. (100%)
 I never drink coffee at night. (0%)
The below is the list of adverbs of frequency with percentages:
Always 100% Sometime 30%
Usually 90% Rarely 10%
Normally 80% Hardly Ever 5%
Often 70% Never 0%
