TUTORIAL SHEET 10_2024: OSCILLATIONS

1. A particle having mass 10 g oscillates according to the equation

𝑥 = (2.0 𝑐𝑚) sin[(100𝑠−1) 𝑡 + 𝜋Ú6]
Find
(a) the amplitude, frequency, period, phase constant and force constant.
(b) the displacement of the particle between t = 0 and t = 3 s.

2. A 200-g block connected to a light spring for which the force constant is 5
N/m is free to oscillate on a horizontal, frictionless surface. The block is
displaced 5 cm from equilibrium and released from rest. Find
(a) the force the spring exerts on the block
(b) the angular frequency, the frequency and the period of oscillation.
(c) the amplitude of oscillation.
(d) the maximum speed of the block
(e) the magnitude of the maximum acceleration of the block?

3. The position, velocity and acceleration of a particle executing simple

harmonic motion are found to have magnitudes 2 cm, 1 m/s and 10 m/s 2
at a certain instant. Find the amplitude and the time period of the
motion.

4. A body of mass 2 kg suspended through a vertical spring executes simple

harmonic motion of period 4 s. If the oscillations are stopped and the body
hangs in equilibrium, find the potential energy stored in the spring.

5. A particle executes simple harmonic motion with an amplitude of 10 cm.

At what distance from the mean position are the kinetic and potential
energies equal?
6. A particular spring stretches by 25 cm when a 500 g mass is hung from
it. Suppose the mass is replaced by a 3 kg mass and the system is then
vibrated horizontally by displacing the mass 50 cm from its equilibrium
position and releasing it. Find (a) the force required to stretch the spring
by this amount? (b) the maximum velocity of the mass (c) its maximum
acceleration (d) its velocity and acceleration when x  15 cm.
7. An object of mass 0.2 kg executes S.H.M. along the x-axis with a
frequency of 25 Hz. At the position m, the object has a K.E. of 0.5
J and P.E. of 0.4 J. Find the amplitude of its oscillations.

8. The total energy of a particle of mass 0.5 kg performing S.H.M. is 25 J.

What is its speed when crossing the center of its path?

9. The bob of a simple pendulum moves harmonically with amplitude 8.0 cm

and period 2.00 s. Its mass is 0.50 kg. The motion of the bob is undamped.
(a) Calculate maximum values for:
(i) the speed of the bob, and
(ii) the kinetic energy of the bob
(b) Find the tension in the supporting thread when the speed of the bob is
maximum.

10. A block whose mass m is 680 g is fastened to a spring whose spring

constant k is 65 N/m. The block is pulled a distance x = 11 cm from its
equilibrium position and released from rest.
(a) What force does the spring exert on the block just before it is released?
(b) What are the angular frequency, the frequency and the period of
oscillation?
(c) What is the amplitude of the oscillation?
(d) What is the maximum speed of the oscillating block?
(e) What is the magnitude of the maximum acceleration of the oscillating
block?

11. A 0.5kg glider, attached to the end of an ideal spring with force constant
k  450 N/m undergoes SHM with amplitude of 0.04m. Compute:
a) The maximum speed of the glider
b) The speed of the glider when it is at x  0.015 m
c) The magnitude of the maximum acceleration of the glider
d) The acceleration of the glider at x  0.015 m
e) The total mechanical energy of the glider at any point in its motion
