ANALYZE
1. From the PPSTs, the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Standards and the TEDx
videos that you viewed, what competencies does a great teacher possess?
After watching the TEDx video, I realized that certain skills are essential for an effective
teacher. These include content knowledge, teaching strategies, classroom management,
communication skills, and professionalism.
Content knowledge refers to teachers' understanding of the subject matter they are
teaching. This requires not only a thorough understanding of the subject but also the ability to
explain it in a way that is accessible to students. Instructional strategies refer to the methods
teachers use to engage and educate their students. This can include things like interactive
activities, group projects, and hands-on learning experiences.
Classroom management is another important skill involved in creating and maintaining a
positive learning environment. This involves setting clear behavioral expectations and imposing
consequences when necessary. Communication skills are also important for effective teaching
because they allow teachers to communicate with students and convey information effectively.
Finally, professionalism is an essential skill for teachers because it includes things like
punctuality, organization, and responsibility. A professional teacher is someone who takes his or
her role seriously and strives to provide the best possible education for his or her students.
Overall, these skills are essential for any teacher who wants to make a positive impact in
the lives of their students. By mastering these skills, educators can create engaging learning
environments that promote student growth and development.
2. Are these competencies limited only to professional competencies?
This question raises an interesting point about whether we should value th ose skills and
competencies in everyone who works with students, not just those who have completed formal
training programs or hold teaching qualifications. For example, parents may also benefit from
having good communication skills and being able to manage their child's behavior effectively. It
is important to note that there may be certain aspects of content knowledge or classroom
management that are specific to the role of a professional teacher and require specialized
training. However, many of the core competencies of being a great teacher could be valuable for
anyone working with children in any capacity.
Overall, this allows us to consider how we define "great" teaching and what skills we
believe are essential for anyone working with young people.
3. For a teacher to be great, is it enough to possess the professional competencies to plan a
lesson, execute a lesson plan, manage a class, assess learning, compute and report
grades? Explain your answer.
While having these specialized skills is certainly important for any teacher, it takes more
than specialized skills to truly excel. Good teachers always do their best by creating engaging
lessons that inspire students' curiosity and love of learning. They foster positive relationships
with their students, based on trust and respect. They also understand the unique needs of each
student in the class and adjust their teaching style accordingly.
Above all, good teachers are lifelong learners and continually seek new knowledge and
strategies to improve their practice. They actively seek feedback from colleagues, administrators,
parents, and most importantly, their own students.
So while possessing technical skills is certainly essential for any good teacher, real
greatness comes from going beyond these basic requirements through creativity , empathy,
adaptability, and continued growth as an educator.
4. For a teacher to be great, which is more important – personal qualities or professional
competencies?
It really depends on what you consider “great” in a teacher. If you value someone who
can make personal connections with students and create a positive classroom environment, then
personal qualities may be more important. On the other hand, if you believe that having good
teaching skills and expertise in their field is important for student success, then technical skills
will be a priority.
It should be noted that both personal qualities and professional skills are important for
teachers: they work together to create effective educators who can have a positive impact on the
lives of students. pupil. A teacher who has excellent lesson plans but lacks empathy for students
may have difficulty keeping students engaged in learning; Similarly, a person who has all the
personal qualities but no technical knowledge will not be able to teach his or her class
effectively. In short, there is not necessarily a clear answer as to which factor is more important
between personal qualities and technical skills when it comes to being a good teacher: both play
an essential role in creating create successful classes.
5. Who are the teachers that we remember most?
These teachers that we remember most are not necessarily be the ones with the most
impressive credentials or awards, but they are the ones who had a special way of connecting with
their students. These memorable teachers often go above and beyond in their teaching methods.
They find creative ways to make lessons engaging and relevant to their students' lives.
Memorable teachers also take an interest in their students as individuals. They get to know them
personally and understand each student's strengths and weaknesses. The teachers we remember
most are those who make learning enjoyable by using creative teaching methods and taking an
interest in their students as individuals.
REFLECT
1. Which personal traits do I possess? Not possess? Where do I need improvement in?
As I reflect on my personal attributes, I am proud to say that creativity, patience, and
respect are among the top traits that define me. These qualities have undoubtedly contributed to
my success as a teacher, allowing me to engage with students in unique and meaningful ways
while also fostering an inclusive and welcoming classroom environment. However, I also
recognize that there is always room for growth and improvement. Specifically, I acknowledge
that my communication skills are an area where I could benefit from further development. While
I possess the knowledge and expertise necessary to effectively teach my students, there are times
when my lack of confidence can impede my ability to clearly convey information or connect
with individuals on a deeper level. It is for this reason that I am committed to enhancing my
communication skills so as to maximize the teaching-learning process. By doing so, I hope to
become an even more effective educator who is able to inspire and empower students from all
backgrounds and walks of life. With hard work, dedication, and a willingness to learn and grow,
I am confident that I can achieve this goal and continue making a positive impact in the lives of
those around me.
2. Which professional competencies am I strongly capable of demonstrating?
My strong competencies in collaboration, teamwork, engagement, caring, and
inclusiveness are not just words on paper but are reflected in my actions and interactions in the
classroom. These competencies are essential in creating a positive and effective learning
environment for all students.
3. In which competencies do I need to develop more?
I appreciate the value of effective communication in the teaching and learning process as
a committed student teacher. I recognize that there is room for progress, particularly in the area
of communication, even if I have a number of skills that add to my capacity to teach.
In my opinion, successful teaching is built on strong communication. Making sure that
students understand and are engaged with the topic is equally as important as just communicating
information. I've seen that in some circumstances, I could improve my communication abilities
to better meet the varied demands of my students. My capacity to modify my communication
style in response to my pupils' various learning styles and comprehension levels is one area I
would like to continue to grow in. I aim to become more adept at explaining complex concepts in
simpler terms when necessary and providing more advanced explanations when students require
them. By doing so, I can ensure that all students, regardless of their prior knowledge or learning
pace, can fully comprehend the subject matter.
Additionally, I want to refine my active listening skills because sometimes all I think is
how to follow the flow of my lesson plan. By becoming a better listener, I can tailor my teaching
approach to address their individual needs and create a more responsive and student-centered
learning environment.
Write Action Research Prompts
1. OBSERVE
In assisting my Resource Teacher, I observed that personal traits such as
Communication skills and professional competencies like communication and
interpersonal skills were least / not displayed and as a result, students were/class was not
able to have a good grasp of the topic and there are 2 to 3 students that sleeps during the
class discussion.
2. REFLECT
The lack of these personal traits and professional competencies (mentioned in #1) may be
caused by: Lack of enough experience, Lack of training or maybe Fear.
