Metaheuristics are implemented widely in the field of Recycling and Disposal Domain in
Solid Waste Management (SWM)
And other Main field is the Vehicle Routing for Solid Waste Collection for optimizing the
collection distance in a certain city. Uses Geographic Information System (GIS) for Data
Base.
Majorly used Algorithms are from Nature Inspired Algorithms
Examples: Ant Colony Optimization, Particle Swarm Optimization, Genetic Algorithm,
Evolutionary Algorithm, Salp Swarm Algorithm (New One)
From this Info, we must decide which optimization has a better result than others.
We must discuss about the various Algorithm and their usage in respective fields.
From the findings, for Vehicle Routing problems for Solid waste Collection, ACS and GA are
most widely used.
And for Disposal Recycling, Genetic, Simulated Annealing, Evolutionary Algorithm are used.
6. Liquid wastes.
Touch upon subjects like e physical treatment process in wastewater treatment and biological
treatment process in wastewater treatment.
The physical treatment process we can have different types of processes along with their
optimization techniques:
Sedimentation: Optimization techniques are RSM(Response Surface Methodology)
ANN(Artificial Neural Networks) is used to identify the optimal operating conditions that
will achieve the desired performance. Operating parameters are flow rate, settling time, and
sludge withdrawal rate.
Filtration: Optimization techniques are GRA(Grey Relational Analysis) and Taguchi Method
for optimal desired performance operating parameters are flow rate, pressure, and filter media
type.
Disinfection: Optimization techniques GA(Genetic Algorithms) and PSO(Particle Swarm
Optimization)Operating parameters are contact time chemical dosage and UV intensity.
Coagulation and Flocculation: Response surface methodology and artificial neural networks.
Operating parameters are coagulant dosage, pH, and mixing intensity.
Membrane Processes: Optimization techniques are Multi-Objective Optimization and Pareto
Optimization. Operating parameters are feed flow rate, pressure, and membrane pore size
Pre-Treatment Processes: Optimization techniques are the Taguchi method and Response
Surface Methodology. Operating parameters are flow rate, retention time, screen or grit size
Mixing: Optimization techniques are the Taguchi method and ANN. Operating parameters
are mixing intensity, retention time, and flow rate.
Aeration: Optimization techniques are genetic algorithms and Particle swarm Optimization.
Operating parameters aeration time, retention time, and dissolved oxygen concentration
Aeration Optimization: Various factors are the aeration rate, cycle time, and the number of
aeration zones. Measure dissolved oxygen, mixed liquor-suspended solids, and nutrient
levels.
Nutrient Optimization: identify optimal nutrient concentrations and dosages. For example, an
experiment could vary factors such as nutrient concentration, nutrient dosage, and nutrient
dosing frequency, and then measure the organic matter and nutrient removal rates to
determine the optimal combination of these factors.
Organic Loading Optimization: Optimizes organic loading rate by identifying the organic
loading rate and the corresponding hydraulic retention time(HRT). An example of an
experiment using the Taguchi method to optimize organic loading is to various factors such
as organic loading rate, hydraulic retention time, and aeration rate, and then measure the
organic matter and nutrient removal rates to determine the optimal combination of these
factors.
