CSE320 - Summer24 - Assignment 1 (DBS)
CSE320 - Summer24 - Assignment 1 (DBS)
Q1.
Suppose a university campus has four departments. Each department has a faculty area and a student
area. Each area can communicate with each other as they are connected centrally. If one area gets
disconnected, other areas remain active. The devices in both areas use a central backbone line and are
connected using multipoint connections only. Finally, each department has point-to-point connections
on both sides with neighboring departments. Identify the topologies from the above scenario and draw
the hybrid topology, assuming there are 3 nodes in each area. [5]
Q2.
Identify the type of network (PAN, MAN, LAN, WAN) for each of the following scenarios: [2]
1. An international company with offices in New York, London, and Tokyo uses a dedicated
network to communicate between these locations.
2. You are sharing files with a colleague using Bluetooth while sitting in the same office. 3. A
university campus network connects multiple buildings and provides internet access for
students and staff.
4. You are browsing the internet at a coffee shop using their public Wi-Fi.
Q3.
Inspect the conversation between two friends:
Friend 1: Hey, I have some parcels for you. Are you at home?
Friend 2: Yes, I’m at home.
Friend 1: Okay, I’ll send you the parcels then.
Friend 2: I’ll receive your parcels.
Friend 1: Are you ready to receive the parcels?
Friend 2: Yes, I’m ready to receive the parcels.
Friend 1: I’ll send you 10 parcels in one shipment.
Friend 2: Can you send 5 parcels, though?
Friend 1: Sure. I’ll send you 5 parcels.
Which layer of the OSI model do you think the communication is being carried out in and why?
[3]
Q4. For n devices in a network, what is the number of cable links required for a mesh, ring, bus, and star
topology? Show the calculation. [4]
Q5. In the diagram below, R1, R2 and R3 are three routers. How many local area networks (LANs) do
you think the topology has and why? If PC1 wants to send data to PC5, then what is the 1st hop that the
data has to go from source PC1? [4]

Q6: Label the frames (1 & 2) shown below in Figure No. 1 with appropriate port, IP and MAC
addresses. Host A has two applications running; one for FTP with port number 4010 and the other for
accessing the web server with port number 3900. The frames shown are all intended for Host A. Frame
1 is from the web server with port number 80 and Frame 2 is from the FTP server with port number 120.
(For indicating MAC addresses, just mention the device or device interface.) [4]
Q7:
Which network layer(s) handle the encryption of data within a packet? Which address(es) remain
consistent across each hop in the network? [3]
Q8: Complete the frames (x & y) given below with appropriate port, IP and MAC addresses. The
sender Host E has two applications running; one for email with port number 49254 and the other for
accessing the web server with port number 52167. Frame x is intended for the BRACU Web server and
Frame y is coming from the Email Server. (MAC addresses are alphabets and IP addresses are
numbers.) [5]
Frame X

Frame Y
