COURSE SYNOPSIS
___________________________________________________________________________________
1. Introduction
World Trade is playing an increasingly role in the economic health of nations. This
trade is dependent on various bilateral or multilateral agreements amongst
industrial countries, most of which are under the umbrella of WTO. These trade
agreements, however, require an underpinning by technical agreements, which
provide for compatible standards of products of the trading partners. Trade
between countries thus become easier and fairer by using standards which are
widely acceptable. After 2005, the WTO agreements have been implemented strictly
and Pakistan may lose in terms of export revenues if international standards are
not followed. ISO 14001 is one such standard that Pakistani export industry must
have to achieve. This course will help the students to systematically introduce the
concepts related to ISO 14001 – Environmental Management System.

2. Learning Objectives
• To develop understanding of ISO 14001 Standard;
• How environmental considerations could be integrated in to processes at
business as well as policy and plan levels;
• To learn implementation of environmental management systems.

3. Teaching Objectives
• To acquaint students with basic concepts and terminologies related to
environmental management systems;
• To enable them to learn how to implement environmental management system;
• To facilitate them to carry out independent scientific and technical research on
developing an EMS plan of an organization.

4. Text and Reading Material


For this course recommended books are:

with Guidance for Use. BSI Standards Publication.
• Raven, P.H., Hassenzahl, D.M and Berg, L.R. 2013. Environmental Science –
Earth as a Living Planet. John Wiley & Sons: USA.
• Miller, T. 2017. Environmental Science. Sixteenth Edition. John Wiley & Sons:
USA.
• Philip J., Anita M. Cooney., and William M. 2001. EMS – An Implementation
Guide for Small and Medium Sized Organizations. NSF International.
The students will be given handouts when and where necessary from different
textbooks and journals. Students will be encouraged to search for relevant material
to expand their exposure and knowledge base.

5. Attendance Requirement
At least 75% attendance is required to be eligible to appear in final examination.

6. Course Assessment
For this course the student’s progress will be assessed as follows:

Assignments/Presentations 05%
Quizzes 05%
Mid Term Exam 20%
Final Term Exam 60%

7. Grading System
The Letter Grades and Grade Points for a course will be assigned on the basis of
the marks obtained by the student in the final examination and the semester work
in the following manner:

What is IS0 14000 and why is it important: Aim of ISO 14000, Background Pertaining
to ISO 14000.

Environmental Management Systems: Important Terms and Definitions

4th & 5th Week


Implementing ISO 14001: Background, Aim of an EMS, Success Factors, PDCA Cycle,
Contents of the International Standard

6th & 7th Week


Implementing ISO 14001: Scope, Normative References, Terms & Definitions

9th Week
Implementing ISO 14001: Planning; actions to address risks and opportunities,
environmental objectives and planning to achieve them. Concepts of environmental
