Question 1 (10 marks)

1.1) Suppose that the probability of living to be older than 70 years is 0.6 and the probability of living to be
older than 80 years is 0.2. If a person reaches her 70th birthday, what is the probability that she will
celebrate her 80th birthday? (2)

1.2) There are three cabinets (A, B and C). Each cabinet has two drawers and each drawer contains
one coin.

 Cabinet A has two gold coins;

 Cabinet B has two silver coins; and
 Cabinet C has one gold coin and one silver coin.

A cabinet is chosen at random, one drawer is opened and a silver coin is found. What is the probability
that the other drawer in the cabinet contains a silver coin? (5)

1.3) A student has two modules, X and Y. The probability of successfully completing module X is 75% and
85% for module Y. The probability that both modules will be completed successfully is 70%. Are the
two modules dependent? Motivate. (Show all calculations to prove your answer). (3)

Question 2 (30 marks)

2.1) Consider the following function:

x
c for x = 1, 2, 3, 4

P( X  x)  

0 otherwise

a) Show that the value of 𝑐 is 10. (2)

b) Determine the mass function of X. (3)

c) Determine and sketch the distribution function of X. (6)

2.2) A missile protection system consists of five radar sets that operates independently, each with a
probability of 0.9 of detecting a missile entering a zone that is covered by all of the units.

a) What is the probability that exactly four radar sets detect a missile entering a zone? (2)

b) What is the minimum number of independent radar sets necessary, if we require the probability of
detecting at least one missile that enters the zone to be 0.999? (4)

2.3) A warehouse contains 10 printers, four of which are defective. A company randomly selects 5 of the
printers for purchase, without replacement. What is the probability that all 5 of the printers are non-
defective? (3)

2.4) Suppose that the telephone lines at an airline reservation office are busy 60% of the time. What is the
probability that it will take four tries for two people to get through to the office? (3)

2.5) An oil prospector will drill a succession of holes in a given area to find a productive well. The
probability that he is successful on a given trial is 0.2. What is the probability that the third hole drilled
is the first to yield a productive well? (2)

2.6) Customers arrive at a checkout counter in a department store according to a Poisson distribution, at
an average rate of seven per hour.

a) During any given half-hour, what is the probability that no customers arrive? (2)

b) During any given hour, what is the probability that no more than three customers arrive? (3)
