ARITHMETIC PROGRESSIONS AND PROBABILITY
1. Bag I contains 4 chips numbered 1, 3, 5 and 7 respectively. Bag II contains 3 chips
numbers 2, 4, 6 respectively. A chip is drawn at random from each bag. Find the
probability that the sum of the two chips drawn is odd.
a. 7/12 b)0 c)1 d)5/12
2. The 5th term from the end of the A.P √2,√8,√18,………√968 is
a) √50 b) √648 c) 50 d)501/3
3. Assertion: If 17th term of an A.P. exceeds its 10th term by 7,then d=1
Reason: nth term of an A.P = a + (n-1)d ,where a ,d and n are first term ,common
difference and number of terms respectively
a) Both Assertion and reason are correct and reason is correct explanation for
Assertion.
b) Both Assertion and reason are correct but reason is not correct explanation for
Assertion.
c) Assertion is correct but reason is false.
d) Both Assertion and reason are false.
4. Assertion: The probability of getting a bad egg in a lot of 400 is 0.035. The number
of bad eggs in the lot is 14.
Reason: . If the probability of an event is p, the probability of its complementary event
will be 1-p.
a) Both Assertion and reason are correct and reason is correct explanation for
Assertion.
b) Both Assertion and reason are correct but reason is not correct explanation for
Assertion.
c) Assertion is correct but reason is false.
d) Both Assertion and reason are false.
5. A bag contains cards which are numbered from 2 to 90. A card is drawn at random
from the bag. Find the probability that it bears.
(i) a two-digit number (ii) a number which is a perfect square.
6. From a well suffled pack of playing cards black jacks, black kings and black aces are
removed. A card is then drawn from the pack. Find the probability of getting.
(i) a red card (ii) not a diamond card.
7. Which term of the progression 65,61,57,53,…… is the first negative term?
8. Find p and q such that: 2p, 2p+ q, p + 4q, 35 are in AP
9. Find the probability of getting 53 Fridays in a leap year.
10. Find the value of the middle term of the following A.P : -6,-2,2,………,58.
11. If a,b,c are in A.P ,show that b+c , c+a , a+b are also in A.P
12. The sum of three numbers in A.P is 12 and the sum of their cubes is 288.Find the
numbers.
13. Three coins are tossed simultaneously ,find the probability of getting
( a ) Atleast 2 heads (b) no tail (c) atmost 1 head
14. A card is drawn at random from a well shuffled deck of playing cards .Find the
probability that the card drawn is
(a) Neither a jack nor a king (b) either a king or a queen
(c) a card of spade or an ace
15. How many terms are identical in the following two A.P’s 2,4,6,…..upto 100 terms
and 3,6,9,…upto 80 terms?
16. If the pth ,qth and rth terms of an A.P are a,b and c respectively , then prove that
(a-b)r + (b-c) p + (c-a) q =0
17. Divide 32 into four parts which are in A.P such that the product of the extremes is to
the product of the means is 7:15. Find the sequence
18. Two dice are thrown simultaneously, find the probability of
(i)The sum as a prime number. (ii) A total of at least 10. (iii) A doublet of even number.
(iv) A multiple of 2 one dice and a multiple of 3 on the other dice.
(v) A multiple of 3 as the sum.
CASE STUDY
19.Arun wants to buy a car and plans to take a loan from a bank for his car.He repays his
total loan of Rs.1,18,000 by paying every month starting with first installment of Rs.1000.If
he increases If he increases the installment by Rs.100 every month , answer the following:
1.Find the amount paid by him in 30th installment.
2.If total installments are 40 then find the amount paid in the last installment?
3.Find the ratio of the 1st installment to the last installment.
20. Shiv and Raman are playing with pair of dice. They throw a pair of dice and write down
the outcomes. Raman says ,we have 36 outcomes .Then he asks some questions to Shiv.
Help Shiv to find the answer
(i) Find the probability that the numbers obtained have sum less than 7
(ii) Find the probability of getting a doublet.
(iii) Mohan says “if I throw a dice once, find the probability of getting a prime
number”.
