CUTTING ON ACTION

Cut from one shot to Is a way of preserving

Cut on Action to Time-Travel: cut on action can also be
used to carry viewer through time.

CUTTING ON For example, a father throwing a baseball to his son.


ACTION

The father winds up and throws the baseball, but instead


of seeing the expected 9-year-old catcher, the viewer sees
a 25-year-old-man in a major league uniform in a big
stadium filled with people.

• Cut to the insert shot, and back to the original shot

• Can also be used to get inside to the head of the


character (quick flashback).

CROSS CUT

• Cut back and forth between location


– E.g. telephone conversation

and tension to the scene
• E.g. A scene showing mischievous
students cleaning up the classroom
while the teacher is heading to the
classroom

inside a character’s head
• Back and forth scene showing the
character and the scene which visualize
the character’s thinking

This type of edit gives the effect


of jumping forwards in time.
JUMP CUT
Usually to show:
• the passing of time or
• the level of urgency of the scene

MATCH CUT
• Cut from one shot, to a similar shot, by either matching the action or the composition.
• Match cut can also be verbal (showing the action of different group at different location, all
talking/referring/addressing the same thing)

SMASH CUT

Abrupt transition Example of application in film

- Someone waking up from an intense dream or


a nightmare
- Going from something intense to quiet
- Going from something quiet to intense

INVISIBLE CUT
• A transition that give the impression of a single take, but the cut is hidden.
– Transition hidden in the blackness
– Transition on the motion of camera movement
– Transition occurs when an object crossing the frame
– Transition occurs when an object leaves the frame

L-CUT
• An audio based transition – an audio from the current shot carries over to the
next shot

audio from the next scene before you
get to it, you hear what is going on
when you see what is going on.
