FOR THE BACHELOR OF EDUCATION IN CIVIL ENGINEERING (B.Ed.)
& BACHELOR OF TECHNOLOGY IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION (B.

ECE 4216: STRUCTURAL DESIGN II

Design Project:
The plan of the slab section below is supposed to be constructed of concrete grade C25 for all
the beams and C30 for all columns; in a proposed Four-storey residential building project
with typical (similar) RC floors and flat roof concrete slab. The loading to the 1m wide slab
includes a dead load of 3.6 kN/m2 and a live load of 2.50 kN/m2. The thickness of the slab is
150 mm, the plaster on the slab is 25 mm thick with a concrete density of 20 kN/m3, and
other finishes are 20 mm thick with a concrete density of 19 kN/m3. The flat roof of concrete
is equipped with a coarse aggregate layer of 20mm thick all around. Determine the design
loads in beams 1 and 2 if the density of concrete is 24 kN/m3 for all the floors.

Section A-A
Formulate Groups of Seven Students (7) for this design Project:
Tasks:
At the end of the design, all groups should:
i. Calculate the maximum bending moment. (Note that all beams are of the same size).
ii. The support reactions and shear force in the columns supporting the beams.
iii. Design for main reinforcements and shear reinforcements for beams 1 and 2.
iv. Design the columns carrying the respective beams in (iii) above (size and number of
reinforcements). Assume simply a supported case and a floor-to-floor height to be
3.15m.
v. Estimate the size and type of the footing; and propose its reinforcement composition.
vi. Produce detailed drawings for the beam and column designed in parts (iii) and (iv)
above.
