10.7 SOME SPECIAL SERIES

Inthis section,we shall find the sum of first n terms of some special series, namely:
(i) 1+2+3+... + 11 (ii) 12 +22+ 32+ .... +n2 (iii) 13 + 23 + 3 + ... + n',
10.7.1 The sum of the first n natural numbers
Let S,, denote the sum of the first n natural numbers, then
S,, = 1+2+3+ ... + n.
This is an arithmetic series with first term a =1,
common difference d = 1, last term l= n and
number of terms n. Using the formula
S, = 2 (a +), we get

S, = 2 (1+ n) = n (n + 1)
2

Thus, S,, = k= n(n + 1)

k=1 2

10.7.2 The sum of squares of the

Let S, denote the sum of first n natural numbers
squares of the first n natural
S,, = 12+ 22 +32 + ... +12. numbers, then
Consider the identity k(k + 1)-(k-1)
Putting k= 1,2, 3, ...,n in (i) k²=3k2 +k
1x 22-0x 12
=3x 12 +1 successively, we get ...()
