A. On MORAL DILEMMA

(Case Analysis)

Read carefully. Follow the guide in making moral decisions. Be brief with your answer. Determine
first the kind of dilemma in the situation before answering. Make sure to check your grammar.

1. Alice has been offered a job that would significantly increase her income and provide her
with many opportunities for growth and advancement. However, she knows that the
company has been involved in unethical practices in the past, such as environmental
pollution and labor exploitation. Alice faces a difficult decision: should she accept the job,
potentially benefiting financially and professionally, but also potentially contributing to and
supporting unethical practices? Or should she decline the job offer, potentially losing out on
these opportunities but also avoiding complicity in unethical behavior?
- This type of dilemma is a Personal Dilemma since it only concerns the growth and
conscience of Alice. If I were Alice would choose to decline the offer. There are still many
opportunities that could help me develop professionally. However, dirtying my
conscience would scar my life and become a lifelong burden. It’s better to delay my
professional growth if it means preserving my conscience in the process.
2. ABC Corporation is a large multinational company that produces consumer goods. The
company has recently discovered that one of its suppliers in a developing country uses child
labor in its production process. The supplier is a major source of raw materials for ABC
Corporation, and severing ties with the supplier would significantly disrupt the company's
supply chain and potentially harm its profits. ABC Corporation faces a difficult decision:
should it continue doing business with the supplier, potentially benefiting financially and
maintaining its supply chain, but also potentially contributing to and supporting child labor?
Or should it sever ties with the supplier, potentially suffering financial losses and supply
chain disruptions, but also taking a stand against unethical practices and contributing to the
welfare of children?
- The ABC Corporation is facing an Organizational Dilemma. If I were part of the board
governing this Corporation, I would first find another supplier to solve a problem before
it is created, then I would sever the ties with the corrupt supplier as knowing those
illegal actions could lead to involvement with the illegal supplier, further worsening the
financial crisis of the Corporation.
3. The government of a developing country is planning to build a new dam that would provide
much-needed hydroelectric power to the region, but would also displace thousands of
indigenous people who have lived in the area for generations. The government claims that
the project is necessary for economic development and that it will provide compensation
and resettlement assistance to the affected communities. The government faces a difficult
decision: should it proceed with the dam project, potentially benefiting the economy and
providing power to the region, but also causing harm to indigenous communities and
potentially violating their rights? Or should it cancel the project, potentially forgoing
economic benefits and power generation, but also upholding the rights and welfare of
indigenous people?
- This problem faces the Structural Moral Dilemma with the government as its center.
Although it may lead to significant losses to societal solutions to impending issues,
endangering the relationship between the government and the people is a bad choice
for the government considering that the government is made to serve the people. It
would be hypocritical to better the status of the homes of the people by paying the price
of destroying the land heritage of the indigenous people which is of the people.

B. On FREEDOM

Specific Directions.

Watch the Movie The Truman Show" (1998). Here is the link:
https://ww7.soap2dayhd.co/film/thetruman-show-2432/.

1. What is the relationship between free will and knowledge?

Free will is impeded when knowledge is lacking. Absence or lack of foreknowledge will result
in not seeing the whole choices of actions.
2. Can we be truly free if we are not aware of the limits of our freedom?
In my opinion, no, since free will is closely related to knowledge. Unawareness is simply
ignorance.
3. What are the implications of the Truman Show for our understanding of free will in the real
world?
The movie implies that in the real world, free will and consequences are two sides of a coin.
This means that all kinds of consequence may happen because it is not predetermined.
4. Do you think it is possible to have a good life without free will? Why or why not?
No, because a life without free will is robotic and bland. It is better to have the worst
consequence than to have a preplanned destiny.
