Internet
Internet
Humanity has kept in touch with innovation from the time of our existence. These have ranged from the emergence
of light bulbs by Thomas Edison to the highest technological inventions in our modern society today. It is evident that
throughout the years, inventions are constantly arising from one after the other; to improve the quality of life, have a more
productive daily outcome, and in general, make our lives easier. Among all these advances, the internet has been one of the
most abundant technological presences in our daily lives today.
The internet, a complex and revolutionary invention from the 1960s, has changed our world in many ways that
humanity has never expected to see. It was originally called the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network or
ARPANET; it was a static network designed to shuttle a small freight of bytes or a short message between two terminals
and is used specifically for government networks until the early 90s. Between the 1960s and 1980s, computers were
originally conceived as a means of calculating. The transformation of computers into a means of communication was
catalyzed by the internet. This was followed by the World Wide Web being made for public network use in the 1990s.
Today, the internet is used by 5.16 billion people in the world. This connected the world in unimaginable ways that
changed our daily lives to the next level. First, the way it became the information superhighway of our society; Science,
news, and anything under the sun could be looked up on the web. Knowledge was at the tip of our fingers. This has been
impactful to the education of all levels by providing unbounded possibilities for learning that are evident in our new
learning curriculum amidst the pandemic. In addition, the Internet widened in scope to encompass the IT capabilities of
research centers, universities, and public and private institutions from around the world.
Aside from it being an information system, it has modernized the way we communicate. We can now send emails
to anyone on the planet within seconds which would have taken days and even weeks before the internet was invented. It
bridged the gap between cultures and differences around the world. Furthermore, the internet today is no longer concerned
with communication and information exchange alone. It has enabled individuals to create content, a source of
entertainment, and even helped businesses operate and advertise.
Out of all the plethora of opportunities and conveniences the Internet has opened, I would like to highlight the
emergence of social media and the way it is currently deeply embedded in our daily lives. It has not only altered people
individually but also in the daily processes in the economy, shopping, business startup culture, and commerce. It became a
platform for dating, meeting new people, and even new ways to form political movements. Maybe someday something
radically will turn the internet upside down. As the internet is brimming with opportunities and the future of our modern
world has just begun.
