ACK DIOCESE OF MASENO NORTH JULY 2024 EVALUATION.

232/2

PHYSICS PAPER 2 MARKING SCHEME

1. *Has 2 magnetic poles (North pole and South pole).

*It attracts magnetic materials/repels like poles and attracts unlike poles

* It settles in the N-S direction when suspended freely

2. *It provides a wider field of view.

3. * To avoid sulphation.The lead (ii) sulphate deposits on the plates and harden

up hence cannot be converted back to lead (ii) oxide and lead.

4. *They do not require material medium for transmission.

*They travel through space with the speed of light.

5. *To differentiate between the live, neautral and earth wire

*To ensure correct wire connection/ correct wiring.

*To ensure safety of the users and appliances.

6 *Temperature/strength/ stress of the conductor

*Length of the conductor.

7 V=λf S=2d/t d=1500 x 3/2

V=0.075×20,000=1500m/s 1500=2d/3 =2,250m

8. * In conductors, conduction bands overlaps with valence band causing

electrons to move freely. Semi-conductors have a narrow forbidden

gap between conductors and valence band. when electrons gain energy

they cross the forbidden band to conduction band hence conducting.

10. *Reducing heater current leads to fewer electrons produced hence lowers

The quantity/ intensity of X-rays produced.

11.

12. a = 230

2|Page
b =90

13 Vs = 24v

power input = 200W

Power output = 200W (100% efficient)

P = IV, 200w = 24 x I, I= 8.33A

14. (a) (i) Earth/Earth connection/Grounding wire

(ii) (I) B stops the charges from escaping through the casing.

(II) C shows deflection /collapses/diverges

(b) (i) Leaf divergence decreases then increases/ falls then rises.

(ii) On approaching the cap, the negatively charged rod repels the

electrons from the cap which neutralizes the positive charges hence

divergence decrease. However the rod is highly negative hence repels

more electrons that cause the leaf to increase again.

(c) (i) The flame bends away from the wire.

(ii) The sharp end of the wire ionizes the surrounding air to positive

and negative ions. The negative ions are attracted to the wire while the

positive ions are repelled away causing ‘’electric wind’’.

(d) capacitor in parallel= 2uF + 6uF = 8uF

8uF and 8uF are now in series hence CT =8 x 8/8 + 8 = 64/16 = 4uF

15 (a) (i) U=50mm, V= 100mm using lens formula 1/f =1/u + 1/v but V is -ve

3|Page
1/f = 1/50 +1/-100=2-1/100=1/100; f=100mm

(ii) M = V/U =100/50 = 2

(b) (i) All the three resistors are connected in parallel.

(ii) 1/RT = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3

1/RT = 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/4 =6+4 +3/12 = 13/12

RT =12/13 =0.923Л

16.(a)*Type of a metal

*Frequency of radiation/ Energy of radiation

4|Page
*Intensity of radiation
(b) .(i) E = hc/λ

=6,63 x 10-34 x 3 x 108/4.3 x 10-7 =4.626 x 10-19 J

(ii) Potassium. The work function of potassium is lower than the energy

of incident radiation.

(iii) E = Wo + K .E K.E = 1/2MV2

4.626 x 10-19 =3.68 x 10-19 + K.E 9.46x10-20 =1/2 x9.1 x 10-31 xV2

K.E = (4.62 -3.68 ) x 10-19 J V2 =9.46 x 10-20/4.55 x 10-31

= 9.46 x 10-20 J = 2.07912 x 1011

V=4.557 x 105 m/s

17.(a) (i) Is the bending of light at the interface when it passes from one media

to another / Is the change of wavelength of a wave at the boundary/ Is

the change in velocity of a wave at the boundary.

(ii) The ratio of the sin of the angle of incidence to the sin of the angle of

refraction is a constant for a given pair of media.

(iii) n1 sinθ1 = n2 sin θ2 ,

4/3 sin i =1.52 sin 28

Sin i = 1.52 sin 28 x 3/4 Sin I = 0.53519758 Sin-1 (0.53519758)=32.360

Θ1 = 32.36

(iv) The dispersed light gets totally internally reflected by the rain

drop and gets refracted towards the observer.

5|Page
b (i)* Light must be travelling from optically denser to optically

lesser denser medium.

*The angle of incidence in the optically denser medium must be greater

than the critical angle.

Application: periscope, optical fibre.

(ii) Sound wave is defracted due to the longer wavelength/ Sound

wave bend around the cliff and spreads out due to the longer wavelength

18. (a) (i)

(ii) (I) 2.7 x 10 = 27cm

(II) Magnification = 80cm / 27cm = 2.963

Is upright/ erect

Is diminished
