Data Performed Date Submitted
I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the experiment students must be able to:

Cognitive
a.) understand what is the significance of designing for errors.

Psychomotor:
a.) determine how designing for errors affect the overall performance of usability

Affective
a.) appreciate how error designing can improve usability

II. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

In order to accomplish this task, the student must have a clear understanding of the following
topics:
• Human capabilities and limitations
• Designing for Errors

III. PROCEDURES

Select any application or system where you encounter slips and mistakes. Describe the system and
how the slips and mistakes are committed. Then make a proposal on the system to avoid these slips
and mistakes.

• A brief description or background of the application, include screenshots.

• The mistakes you usually encounter when using the application at least three, you may describe
this by providing screenshots also
• Redesign the interface to address these concerns, provide a short explanation on the new design
you made to counter the errors

Make sure to include reference if there is, you may use any tool for designing (e.g. Photoshop)
Submit this one in a doc or pdf file.

Lab Activity Designing for Errors
CLO 1

Note: The following rubrics/metrics will be used to grade students’ output in the lab 5.
Application: Linux Operating System Setup
Description: The Linux Operating System setup is a process that involves installing a Linux
distribution on a computer. This process includes steps such as partitioning the hard drive,
selecting the installation type, setting up user accounts, and configuring system settings.

Common Mistakes:

• Incorrect Partitioning: During the setup, users may incorrectly partition their hard
drive, leading to inefficient use of storage space.
• Choosing the Wrong Distribution: Linux comes in various distributions, each with its
own set of features and benefits. Users often choose a distribution that doesn’t suit their
needs.

• Setting Up User Accounts Incorrectly: Users may set up their user accounts with weak
passwords or without administrative privileges, leading to potential security risks.

Redesign Proposal:

• Guided Partitioning: To avoid incorrect partitioning, the setup process could include a
guided partitioning tool that suggests the optimal partitioning scheme based on the user’s
hard drive size.
• Distribution Selection Guide: The setup could provide a guide that helps users choose
the right distribution based on their needs and preferences.
• User Account Setup Guide: The setup process could include a guide that helps users set
up their user accounts securely, including tips for creating strong passwords and
information about the importance of administrative privileges.
