Complex Engineering Problem

Subject: EE209- Electronics Circuit Design

Semester: Spring 2024
Total Weightage: 10
Instructors: Amina Asif, Madeeha Uzma

Objective:
The objective of this complex engineering problem is to carry out research, analysis, design,
investigation and implementation of a cascaded Operational Amplifier circuit for an industrial
application.

Complex Engineering Problem Outcomes (CEPO):

The outcome of this problem is that the students may be able to partially attain some or all of the
following graduate attributes:

1. GA1: Engineering Knowledge

2. GA2: Problem Analysis
3. GA3: Design/Development of Solutions
4. GA4: Investigation
5. GA5: Modern Tool Usage
6. GA9: Individual and Teamwork
7. GA10: Lifelong Learning

But in the course, the problem is mapped CLO3 and your performance in this project will play an
important role in their attainment. CLO3 is reproduced:

S No CLO Statement PLO Level

3 Compute the performance parameters of Differential, Multistage PLO – 3 C3
and Operational amplifier and select appropriate design.

Statement:
You have been hired in a well known industry at its equipment safety and handling department to
develop a system that generates an alert if the temperature of the equipment goes above or below
a certain safe range. The safe temperature range for the equipment is 12o < T< 38o

The equipment that you have to work with has a temperature sensor LM35 and its associated
amplifier circuit with a fixed gain of 25V/V (also to be designed). The temperature vs voltage
graph of LM35 is given below:

1
One of the possible solutions for the above requirement is given in the block diagram below.

The circuit has 4 Units:

1. Temperature sensor and Amplifier Unit:

You have to use LM35 whose output is fed to an appropriate OP-AMP amplifier
configuration that gives a voltage gain of 25V/V. Choose appropriate resistances to
obtain the gain. From the above graph carry out the voltage calculations for desired
range of temperatures and also for the output of amplifier.

2. Upper and lower threshold Generator VH and VL

These two units have a fixed input of 10 V and have to be designed using OP-AMP. The
required output of these units is VL=3V and VH=9.5V.

2
3. Window comparator
This unit will compare the output of the temperature sensor unit with the upper and lower
threshold and will generate a signal to any indicator unit (buzzer or LED).

Available Resources:

You have the following components and devices available:

Operational Amplifiers (741)

LM35 Temperature sensor
Resistances
A 10V-12V dc supply only

Tasks and Deliverables:

Simulate and implement each block using OP-AMP and appropriate resistances.
Use any of the OP-AMP configurations to design the threshold network.
Mention all the design parameters of each module along with the complete design calculations.
Make a technical report with a brief introduction, theory of operation, calculations and
conclusion. Submit the group report with not more than 4 students in each group.

Deadline
The assigned task is due on May 27, 2024 2:30pm.
