1. INTRODUCTION
The GSS2 plus is a functional tool for testing the full operation of the PM205
product range. The GSS2 plus is portable, lightweight and rugged and has
been designed for use within a factory or service bay environment.
1.1 APPLICATIONS
The Hanson PM205 should be checked for calibration and functionality
regularly, the manufacturer recommends an annual check. The GSS2 plus is
part of that process and should be used when checking the electronic
functionality of any of the PM205 range.

3. FUNCTION TEST PROCEDURE FOR PM205 USING GSS2 PLUS

The following instructions can be used to functionally test the PM205. If using
this test procedure to check the calibration of the PM205, ensure that this test is
performed with a calibrated digital meter connected via the “Test sockets”
located on the top edge of the GSS2 plus. These sockets should be connected
+ve to red and –ve to black.
The following test procedure shows 2 error values. When function testing, not
using a calibrated digital meter, the values shown on the PM205 should match
that of the F values.
When calibrating and using a digital meter, the values shown on the PM205
should match that of the C values. The values on the digital meter should be
used as the true value and the overlay scales discarded. The overlay scales
should only be used as a rough set of scales, it is highly recommended that a
calibrated digital multi-meter is used in conjunction with the GSS2 plus
whenever possible.

4. PM205 CALIBRATION USING GSS2 PLUS

4.1 CALIBRATION
1. The PM205 should be checked regularly, and calibrated if necessary. You
will need a calibrated digital multi-meter and the GSS2 calibration box.
2. The calibration procedures are identical to the inspection procedures, with
the addition of adjusting the displayed values using the internal set-up
potentiometers within the PM205 enclosure.
3. There are eight potentiometers in two banks of four on the Signal board.
They are labelled (from left to right) Test, Zero, Gain, and Threshold. The
top set adjust the voltage, the bottom set adjust the resistance.
4. To calibrate the unit:
5. Check the simulator resistance values are correct, using the multi-meter.
6. Connect the GSS2 plus to the PM205, and use the multi-meter (on
AC/Volts) to monitor the voltage. Set the zero level using the zero
potentiometers (pots). – The inputs to the Wellhead connector will
automatically be shorted when the test leads from the GSS2 plus are
connected to the PM205. The displays should read as follows:
7. Wellhead Voltage 0.000 ± 0.003
8. Ground Integrity 00.0 ± 00.3
9. Set the Span values using the gain pots. Monitor the simulator output using
a digital voltmeter (DVM) on 2 volts AC (RMS.) range. Use the GSS2 to
generate AC signals for the following values, check each reading on the
DVM.
DVM reading 0.500 Wellhead Voltage 0.500 ± 0.005
DVM reading 0.200 Wellhead Voltage 0.200 ± 0.002
DVM reading 0.750 Wellhead Voltage 0.750 ± 0.007
DVM reading 0.820 Wellhead Voltage 0.820 ± 0.009
10. Now increase the resistance on the simulator to 100 ohms. The Ground
Integrity reading should track the simulator resistance. The Wellhead
Voltage should not change by more than 2 % on the display.
11. Set the resistance values. Test four (above) does an approximate check on
the resistance channel. For a more precise check, remove the PM205
Wellhead connection, and replace it with a precision resistor (100.0 ohm,
0.1%).
12. Ground Integrity 100.0 ± 2.0
13. Set the Threshold Display value using the Threshold pots. - Press the
THRESHOLD display BUTTON. The threshold DISPLAY lights:
14. Wellhead Voltage 0.250 ± 0.003
15. Ground Integrity 25.0 ± 00.3
16. Set the Internal Test signal level using the Test pots . Press the TEST
button to generate the internal test signals. The TEST button lights, and the
signals are imposed on top of the input signals, so the simulator is shorted
out. The factory values are:

17. Wellhead Voltage 0.350 ± 0.004
18. Ground Integrity 35.0 ± 00.4
4.2 TEST 8: RF TEST

Set the “NOTRIP-CAL-TEST-VARI” switch to NO TRIP
RF button out Alarm will reset
Alarm light will go off
RF button in Alarm will sound
Alarm light will glow

5. BATTERY CHARGING
ONLY USE NiMH (Nickel metal hydride) BATTERIES
Turn Gss2 plus OFF, plug the charger connector into “Charger” socket and
switch charger ON.
The following Lights on the charger should come on as follows
Red “Power” shows it is powered up and charging.
Green ON then flashing it is charging steady ON the battery is fully charged.
IF Green is flashing and Red is OFF then either the battery is not connected or
reversed.
NB Should the tip of the charger lead become detached; ensure that the 2 +
symbols line up when re-fitting.
