Foreword

Mathematics deals with some fundamental aspects related to time and space. We all learn
different rules and related operations starting from our elementary stage of schooling. Different
students take the subject differently as per their interest and willingness. Some students calculate
values with adequate speed and some other students do the same with lot of difficulties. We also
point out the development of fear related to Mathematics in the mind of some of the fellow
students.

We cannot analyse the possible reasons of the development of such fear in the mind of
students. This development cannot be generalised. It is not developed in the minds of all the fellow
students. Things often become difficult when our fellow ward fail to correlate the linkages of real
life problems with that of mathematical ones. It is the main reason of the lack of proper
orientation in the process of the development of mathematical skills. A skilful student can
correlate both the aspects of mathematics and real life problems with much efficiency.

A skilful student of mathematics should be a good observer, a perfect planner, optimum

analyser and abled calculator. Some students can take much time in solving any individual
mathematical problem that compared to the time taken by the other fellow from the same peer
group.

This book is designed to expose a student to different types of mathematical problems

from the allied fields of the curriculum specified for the middle school. It is expected that this
workbook can equip a student in different ways and enable them to acquire mathematical skills
with a long lasting impression in mind.

How to use this Handbook?

This book is for aspirants looking for some more practices to enhance their
mathematical skills and competence. It can be used only after completing the text
books and reference books recommended by the school of the fellow learner. This
book accommodates all possible streams of curriculum prescribed for the students
belonging to the age group of 11 to 13 years. It can even help them in gaining skills
of tackling composite mathematical problems duly coined for addressing more
than three and more basic skills.
Answers of individual problems are not included in this booklet. There
exists a separate collection for fulfilling such purposes. Due to this reason this
handbook can be used by teachers and fellow parents for assessing achievement
levels of their aspirants.
This handbook provides ample scope of skill enhancement through offering series
of test materials in which aspirants have to use more than one skills at a time. It
will also improve the ability to think and work out own strategies of resolving
mathematical problems.
There are mathematical problems which require knowledge of more than one
thematic areas. Such problems are incorporated in the collections of Composite
worksheets. In this workbook such composite worksheets are more in number.
For all students it would be better if they acquire such skills in advance before
moving through the composite worksheets.

Other books in this series are as follows:

1. Handbook of Mathematics

The curriculum recommended by CBSE and ICSE are on the same format like those
developed and implemented by different state level educational organisations. After integrating all
such streams a common core of the curriculum is duly obtained for making the book a widely
applicable one. Some of the mathematical problems are from past test papers. In some papers
there may remain some questions of identical format. All such questions will be addressed only
after proper understanding of the relevant theories.

Some of inter related areas are converged to bring compactness in the representation of
the content areas. There may exist some types of questions in more than two places with an
aspiration of exhibiting its composite nature.

Before moving through the collection of worksheets and related fields of activities it is
recommended for all the students that one should go through the content areas duly provided by
the authority of examinations.

After such thorough practices one can opt for the composite worksheets with some
easiness.
1. Number System

We can represent any number in different ways as per our need. It may
be in the form of simple countable numbers, in the form of signed integers or
may be in the form of parts of a whole. Some of the common representations
that generally discussed at school level are as follows.

1.1 Integers

All the positive and negative numbers along with zero are called Integers.
Value of integers increase when we move from lift to right on a number line.
During our shift from right to left the value of integer goes down. The
greatest negative integer is -1 and the smallest positive integer is +1.

1.2 Rational Numbers

3 7 9
Some numbers are represented in the form of simple ratio such as , ,
4 11 17
etc. These numbers can have a definite position on the number line. In this
way all the integers, all the natural numbers and all the whole numbers can
be considered as rational numbers.

1.3 Fractions and Decimals

Numbers representing part of a whole are called fractions. Any expression

with a negative denominator cannot be considered as fraction. A fraction can
have positive denominator.
Some special types of fractions having denominators in the form of a multiple
of 10 are decimal values. We can represent any fraction in the form of
decimal values. Some of the decimal values may be of terminating type, and
some other fractions having factors other than 2 and 5 in the denominator
can be represented in the form of non-terminating type of decimal.
For example
Basics of Mathematics

1 1 1 1
= 0.5; = 0.25 ; = 0.125 ; = 0.333 … . ;
2 4 8 3
9 3 4
1.934 = 1 + + + ;
10 100 1000

Similarly:
1. 1232.4054 =
2. 1043,546 =
21 132 4321
3. + + = __________
100 1000 10000
11 12 11 13 12
4. 𝑋 𝑋 𝑋 𝑋 =
144 121 139 125 25

1.4 Exponents

Numbers can be represented in the form of exponential values of certain

base.

For example 16 = 2X2X2X2 = 24 ;

125 = 5 X 5 X 5 = 53 .

If a,b,c and d are any rational numbers, then,

1. am X bm = (ab)m

2. am X an = (a)m+n

3. am ÷ an = (a)m-n

2

2. Ratio Proportion and Percentage

You can also add quotes in the book. Make sure to mention the name of the author though.

2.1 Ratios

Representation of any comparative value in the form of simple rational

number or in the form of parts of a whole is considered as ratio. It is the
comparison of two different quantities having same units.
For example 2 km and 1200 m can be compared as 2000: 1200 or
20:12 or 5: 3.

2.2 Proportions

Proportion is a comparison of two rates or two different ratios.

Many real life problems can be solved by applying proportions.

Example: In one day you earn Rs. 375 for 8 hours of work. If you work 37.5
hours for the week, what will your weekly earning?
Solution: Let the person will earn Rs. x in a week.
8 hours Rs.375
=
37.5 hours x

or 8x = 75 × 37.5

or 8x = 2812.5
or x = 2812.5
therefore, the person will warn Rs. 2812.5 in a week.

3. Lines and Angles
Any straight geometrical shape having no endpoint is called a line. It
can be extended endlessly on both the directions. Two rays join at a definite
point to form an angle. A line cannot be measured perfectly, but a line
segment can be measured perfectly.
A line can be extended endlessly in both the directions. A ray can be
extended in any one direction. A line segment is of a definite length. Two rays
join to form an angle.
Different angles are formed on the basis of their magnitude. Smallest
angle is of magnitude zero degree. Measure of a complete angle is 3600.

4. Polygons
Any closed figure made of three or more sides are called polygons. They
receive their common names on the basis of their numbers of sides.

Shapes Number of sides Name

4 Quadrilateral

5 Pentagon

3.1 Tria
ngles

Triangle is a smallest polygon having three vertices, three angles and

three sides. Properties of triangles are widely discussed in the field of studies
related to geometry. Here we discuss the properties of triangle related to
interior angles, exterior angles, relationship of sides and relationship of other
sub-ordinate parts.
It is easy to establish correlations between angles, sides and vertices of
a triangle. This shape also provides a basic platform for the study of
properties of other polygons. Those aspects can be discussed in outline.
We can draw a triangle by using three non collinear points located on a
single plane. Lines joining any two of the three non collinear points can form
a closed figure having three sides, three vertices and three angles. Such a
polygon is the figure we are discussing about. If two adjacent triangles share
a common arm then the resultant closed figure will be a quadrilateral. In this
way triangles can be located in polygons having more than three sides.
9
Worksheets and Assignments

Triangles are classified on the basis of their sides and angles. Isoscles
right triangle and scalene right triangle can be drawn. Construction of
equilateral right triangle is not possible. There are some other combination in
triangles which is not possible in actual construct. Some of such examples of
absurdity are as follows:

1. Triangles having two obtuse angles or two right angles.

2. Triangle having interior angles more than or less than two right angles.
3. Triangle having two exterior angle as right angle.
4. Two congruent triangles having three corresponding angles equal to
each other and three corresponding sides unequal to each other.

While constructing a triangle it I observed that third side of any triangle

will be, either greater than the difference of the length of other two sides, or
less than the sum total of other two sides.

Triangles are the smallest possible closed figure formed by joining

three straight lines. Other polygons, such as quadrilaterals, pentagons,
hexagons can be obtained by joining triangles side by side.

4.2 Quadrilaterals

Four sided closed figures are called quadrilaterals. Rectangles, squares,

trapezoids, kites are all examples of quadrilaterals.

Sum total of all the interior angles of a quadrilateral is equal to four right
angles.

10
Basics of Mathematics

A quadrilateral having any one angle as reflex angle is called a concave

quadrilateral. On the other hand quadrilaterals having angles less than a
straight angle are convex quadrilaterals.
