CHAPTER 3
Modifying Tools (Part 2)
In this chapter, you will learn to do the following:
The Move, Copy, Rotate, Scale, Trim, Extend, Fillet, Chamfer, Mirror, Explode, Stretch, Offset, Polar
Array, Path Array, Rectangular Array tools.
Editing Tools
In previous chapters, you have learned to create some simple drawings using the basic drawing tools.
However, to create complex drawings, you may perform various editing operations. The tools to
perform the editing operations are available in the Modify panel on the Home ribbon. You can click
the down arrow on this panel to find more editing tools. Using these editing tools, you can modify
existing objects or use existing objects to create new or similar objects.
The Fillet tool converts the sharp corners into round corners. You must define the radius and select the
objects forming a corner. The following figure shows some examples of rounding the corners.
Before
After
Example
Then use fillet to make first left corner round with radius of 5.
• Set the limits:” lower left corner= (0, 0), upper right corner= (80, 40)” [Optional]
o Type Limits and press ENTER.
o Type 0, 0 and press ENTER.
o Type 80, 40 and press ENTER.
• Type-in Z in the command line to activate the ZOOM command.
• Click the All option in the command line.
First Draw the lines.
Using Fillet:
• Click Home > Modify > Fillet on the ribbon or enter F in the command line.
• Select the Radius option from the command line.
• Type 5 and press ENTER.
• Select the vertical line and the horizontal line as shown below.
The Chamfer tool replaces the sharp corners with an angled line. This tool is similar to the Fillet tool,
except that an angled line is placed at the corners instead of rounds.
Example
• Set the limits:” lower left corner= (0, 0), upper right corner= (100, 50)” [Optional]
o Type Limits and press ENTER.
o Type 0, 0 and press ENTER.
o Type 100, 50 and press ENTER.
• Type-in Z in the command line to activate the ZOOM command.
• Click the All option in the command line.
First Draw the rectangle.
• Click Home > Modify > Fillet > Chamfer on the ribbon or enter CHA in the command line.
• Type D and press ENTER to input the distances.
• Type 5 as the first chamfer distance and press ENTER
• Type 5 as the second chamfer distance and press ENTER
• Select the vertical line on the left-side.
• Click Home > Modify > Fillet > Chamfer on the ribbon or enter CHA in the command line.
• Type D and press ENTER to input the distances.
• Type 2 as the first chamfer distance and press ENTER
• Type 5 as the second chamfer distance and press ENTER
• Select the vertical line on the left-side.
• Select the horizontal line connected to the vertical line
• Click Home > Modify > Fillet > Chamfer on the ribbon or enter CHA in the command line.
• Type D and press ENTER to input the distances.
• Type 2 as the first chamfer distance and press ENTER
• Type 5 as the second chamfer distance and press ENTER
• Select the vertical line on the right-side.
• Select the horizontal line connected to the vertical line
• Click Home > Modify > Fillet > Chamfer on the ribbon or enter CHA in the command line.
• Type D and press ENTER to input the distances.
• Type 5 as the first chamfer distance and press ENTER
• Type 5 as the second chamfer distance and press ENTER
• Select the vertical line on the right-side.
• Select the horizontal line connected to the vertical line
The Mirror tool creates a mirror image of objects. You can create symmetrical drawings using this tool.
Activate this tool and select the objects to mirror, and then define the ‘mirror line’ about which the
objects will be mirrored. You can define the mirror line by either creating a line or selecting an existing
line.
Example
Use mirror command to assist you in the drawing the following shape: (limits, “0,0”, “75,40”)
• Set the limits:” lower left corner= (0, 0), upper right corner= (75, 40)” [Optional]
o Type Limits and press ENTER.
o Type 0, 0 and press ENTER.
o Type 75, 40 and press ENTER.
• Type-in Z in the command line to activate the ZOOM command.
• Click the All option in the command line.
First Draw one of the corners (line, fillet and circle) as given in the hint
• Click Home > Modify > Mirror on the ribbon or enter MI in the command line.
• Select the drawings, and then press ENTER to accept the selection.
• Select the end point of the horizontal line as mirror line’s first point.
• Make sure Ortho Mode is active.
• Move the pointer downward and click anywhere as the mirror line’s second point.
• Click on No in order not to delete the original shape (a copy of it will be mirrored)
• Click Home > Modify > Mirror on the ribbon or enter MI in the command line.
• Select the drawings, and then press ENTER to accept the selection.
• Select the lower left corner of the shape as mirror line’s first point.
• Select the lower right corner of the shape as the mirror line’s second point.
• Click on No in order not to delete the original shape (a copy of it will be mirrored)
The Explode tool explodes a group of objects into individual objects. For example, when you create a
drawing using the Polyline tool, it acts as a single object. You can explode a polyline or rectangle or any
group of objects using the Explode tool.
Example
Draw a 5-sided polygon randomly then use explode tool to edit the sides separately.
• Click Home > Modify > Explode on the ribbon or enter X in the command line.
• Select the polygon from the drawing.
• Press ENTER; the polygon is exploded into individual objects.
The Stretch tool lengthens or shortens drawings or parts of drawings. Note that you cannot stretch
circles using this tool. In addition, you must select the portion of the drawing to be stretched by
dragging a window.
• The object completely within the selection window will be moved without any change in
their dimension.
• The object that will be cut by the selection window will be stretched.
Example
Task: suppose you have designed the object but the 150-unit distance need to be increased to 250
units.
• Click Home > Modify > Stretch on the ribbon or enter STRETCH in the command line.
• Create a crossing window to select the objects of the drawing.
The Offset tool is creating parallel copies of lines, polylines, circles, arcs and so on. To create a parallel
copy of an object, first you must define the offset distance, and then select the object. Next, you must
define the side in which the parallel copy will be placed.
Example
Draw the given shape. (limits “0,0”,”150,150”)
• Set the limits:” lower left corner= (0, 0), upper right corner= (150, 150)” [Optional]
o Type Limits and press ENTER.
o Type 0, 0 and press ENTER.
o Type 150, 150 and press ENTER.
• Type-in Z in the command line to activate the ZOOM command.
• Click the All option in the command line.
First Draw the 80 by 80 Square with the four circles at the corner, trim the circle as follow:
• Click Home > Modify > Offset on the ribbon or enter O in the command line.
• Type 10 as the offset distance and press ENTER.
• Select any of the arcs.
• Click inside of the arc to create the parallel copy.
• Select the copied arc.
• Click inside of the arc to create another parallel copy.
• Repeat the process to get all of the arcs. The result will be as shown.
• Press ESC button to deactivate the offset command
We can use Extend command to extend the arcs to get the desired shape.
