THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
Introduction
For the Strength of Youth (FSY) conferences are optional large-scale youth activities held under
the direction of an Area Presidency. FSY includes a carefully balanced program of classes, devotionals,
and activities for youth ages 14–18. The venue, interaction with young single adult counselors,
curriculum, housing and learning environment, and five-day duration all contribute to the total

Historical Summary
With the Mutual Theme: "Press Forward", the For the Strength of Youth [FSY]
Conference were held for the first time in the Philippines. The Cavite Area Coordinating
Council was one of the pioneering areas for this event. The FSY Conference for the San Gabriel
Philippines Stake and Las Pinas Philippines Stake [Cavite Area Coordinating Council] was held
Bro. Miguel Valdez, the in-area advisory couple, had commented that the overarching
objective of this conference is to "provide a climate of personal revelation where the youth and
young single adult leaders can be strengthened in their efforts to come unto Christ." Each class,
activity, and other event included in an FSY is meant to accomplish that objective [see FSY
Guidebook].
Hundreds of youth gathered in these FSY Conference. In the Cavite Area Coordinating
Council's FSY, about 285 youth and 48 leaders have participated in this historic conference,
This conference was planned for the past 9 to 12 months to ensure thorough spiritual
The FSY conference is a once in a lifetime activity that will forever stay in the hearts of
the youth and leaders who participated. Together, the youth and leaders helped each other to

Historical Accounts
We were able to conduct weekly trainings according to the schedule provided by the area.
There are adjustments that we need to make and improvise in order for the whole FSY staff to be
prepared in every aspect. In the entire 6-month weekly trainings, we discussed and developed
our skills in doing our responsibilities. Each staff member was guided accordingly since we have
conducted skills practice, workshops, inspirational messages, and Day 1-5 simulations. One of
the most important requirement for us to be ready is to be spiritually prepared. There have been
instances where we were able to go to the temple and perform sacred ordinances. We also have
the opportunity to have a group fasting. Our session directing couple and the rest of the FSY staff
are there to remind each one of us regarding the standards that we need to keep. Each of us have
challenges during the preparation like maintaining good academic performance and requesting
for a 1 week leave for work. We felt the Lord’s hand in guiding us on our daily activities. It
requires strong faith and diligence to do this marvelous work for the youth.
Day 1:
With all the preparations we made for the past 6 months, all that remains is our best efforts
that we will be exerting for the next 5 days. We were informed that some parts of the venue were
still occupied and check-in will not be available until the afternoon. We were able to consider that
information before the actual day and we made adjustments in our schedule so that the important
programs of the first day will be executed smoothly. Concerns like luggage and registration were
resolved through the assistance of the counselors and assistant coordinators. The first day
covered the orientation about the FSY, meeting the counselor groups and companies. With our
best efforts, we were able to follow the schedule and proceed with the family home evening. The
participants were introduceds to personal and group scripture study activities as they end the
day. An evaluation was done after the whole day activities.
Day 2:
The participants started their day 2 with a morning devotional and scripture study. We
were able to wake earlier than 7:00am in order for us to make some short preparations and
reminders for the activities of this day. During the morning and early afternoon, the participants
together with the FSY staff were privileged to hear and receive messages from the MTC teachers.
In the afternoon, the youth participated in try-out activities for musical program rehearsal, and
variety show. In the evening, we conducted dance instruction and dance etiquette where in the
23

participants were able to learn the first line dance. A dance social activity followed after the dance
instruction. During the dance social activity, we conducted a dance contest based from the
preparations made by an assistant coordinator group. After the dance activities, we went through
the reflection and scripture study. An evaluation was also done after all the activities.
Day 3:
The third day of the FSY conference comprises of learning and teaching activities
beginning from the morningside devotional, Preach My Gospel activity, and Sharing the Gospel
activity. The session directing couple, coordinators, and the assistant coordinators shared their
knowledge and skills in accordance to the things that they have acquired in studying the Preach
My Gospel manual. The try-outs for musical program rehearsal and variety show were
continued. The evening activities on Day 3 are team building activities such as Banner and Cheer
preparation, Games Night and Cheer off. Each company were given materials to design banners
that best describe their company, and they were also assigned to come up with a cheer for their
group. The FSY men and women staff also participated in the Cheer off activity. After the cheer
off and banner presentations, everyone were able to enjoy the food offered for the Favorite Food
Night activity. The counselors conducted evaluation meetings for the youth to reflect on the
things they have learned. At the end of their schedule, the staff were also able to reflect and
evaluate on the things they have done for the day.
Day 4:
This day covered the Living Christ Activity where a counselor group will be divide and
then be given assignments to prepare, study and teach to their co-counselor group participants.
We were able to witness the talents of the young men and young women as the variety show was
conducted in the afternoon, the assistant coordinator informed us that all of those youth who
participated during the try outs were all given an opportunity to perform. They performed and
showed their talents in groups in order to maximize the time allotted for them. After the variety
show, the musical program followed where in the participants followed a prescribed piece
consisting of hymns on different arrangements. We were able to feel the strong influence of the
Holy Ghost on this day. After witnessing all the good things that happened this day, the
participants have the chance to share their thoughts through their testimonies. Their counselors
taught them the proper way to share testimonies. They have felt the mighty change of the youth
as they went through the activities of the FSY conference. We have conducted an evaluation and
disseminated some reminders for the next day activities.

Day 5:
The last day of the FSY conference covered the Taking it Home preparation activity. The
participants were taught and reminded of the valuable things and lessons that they will be taking
home to their families. A For the Strength of Youth activity was also conducted by the counselors
to remind the youth of the Lord’s standards that they need to keep. We had an opportunity to be
visited by elder Pajaro to facilitate the Service activity and as well as to remind the youth of the
things that they have learned and the lessons that they need to apply for the future. We concluded
the day with a formal dance social activity, Taking it Home activity, and a farewell message from
the session directing couple. The participants felt the strong Spirit and also the bond that they
shared with each other during the five day Youth Conference. It is everyone’s prayer that we will
be able to remember, apply and press forward with the things that we have learned
The session committee and logistical administrators met together at Muntinlupa chapel,
each member ready with his 6-day luggage. At 5:00PM we left for Tagaytay and arrived at the
venue around 6:30. The nervousness were evident in our faces. Before we checked in to the hotel
and had dinner, we received our IDs, staff shirts, and snacks good for 5 days, which were
thoughtfully prepared by our logistical administrators. They did immeasurable amount of work
to prepare the staff’s and youth’s accommodation. When everyone was ready for the rest of the
night, we headed to the auditorium for our final preparations together.
The session-directing couple gave us a message to ready our hearts and minds for a
spiritual feast in the coming days. We were asked to choose and memorize a scripture passage
we would like to always remember when unlikely situations arise. Their dedication reassured us
of the comfort and courage that we can receive when we also put all of our souls in this cause. An
assistant coordinator and counselor shared their verses about faith and how they feel about the
miracles we can bring in the strength of the Lord as we truly serve and love the youth.
The assistant coordinators met with their counselors to set goals and expectations and to
review their week-long duties. Then the counselors met with their co-counselors to plan their
assignments and other goals as a group. Simultaneously, we met with the session-directing
couple and logistical administrators to coordinate final instructions and receive other materials.
It was a short night of final preparations but the many long months of trainings and
practices we had replaced the jitters with surge of excitement. We didn’t know exactly how the
youth will be but we were filled with faith that everything will be well.
25

"Meet Your Counselor" and "Meet Your Company" followed. They were grouped into
their respective age-groups and met their assigned young single adult leader for the whole week;
they set company goals and name, and played getting-to-know games.
Orientation was held after lunchtime. Each member of the session committee was
introduced and our session’s FSY cheer was taught to the youth. The session-directing couple
gave them a warm welcome and some instructions including the Big Five, and also invited each
of us to write down a question we hoped to be answered throughout the ocnference. I felt like the
youth and counselors were slowly becoming more comfortable with their groups and were
having clearer expectations for the whole FSY experience. This climate was further magnified
when Elder Ian Ardern of the Area Presidency and his wife came for a devotional. They invited
the youth to share the ways to "press forward" and taught the "Go Forward with Faith" section of
For the Strength of Youth booklet.
The last activity for this day was Family Home Evening. We offered a musical number for
the youth and the session-directing couple gave a lesson about the history and importance of
holding family home evenings. After the lesson, each youth received a Family Home Evening
Board which they can use for their own families; they then went to their respective companies for
games, goal setting, and refreshments.
The day ended with personal scripture study time and "Reflect and Review" session which
was held every day per counselor group. They reviewed what took place and what were learned
the whole day. When everyone was done and head counts turned in, the session committee met
again for evaluation and few instructions for the morrow.
As the first day came to a close, it was as if we had found our family away from our own
homes. We attribute the success of this day in following the schedule of activities and meetings,
and more importantly, in following the Spirit to adapt to the needs of everyone. Even if we
roleplayed hourly events in our trainings before FSY, there was always something different in the
actual. There was greater satisfaction not just from knowing that we have a picture in mind of
26
For the Strength of Youth Conference
THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
what’s going to happen next but from knowing that we were guided in implementing those
anticipations.
As Gospel Study ended they headed to the auditorium for the Session-Directing Couple
Morningside. The musical number rendered by a group of youth helped prepare our hearts and
minds for another revelatory experience with our session-directing couple. After the couple’s
message about “feasting upon the words of Christ” the teachers briefly introduced themselves
and the topics they will teach.
For our session we had eight teachers coming from Stake and Mission Presidencies,
Seminaries & Institutes of Religion, and Missionary Training Center. We were so eager for each
youth to have meaningful time learning from what these brothers and sisters have known and
experienced consecrating their lives in the work of the Lord. Each youth attended two classes
before lunchtime and then another two after. It was like serving them with a physical and
spiritual banquet at the same time.
Now that they are filled, time to use those energies and showcase their talents. Our
assistant coordinators and counselors led out in holding Musical Program rehearsals and Variety
Show tryouts for the youth, while others were having “free time” activities and developing
friendships. These programs were announced and promoted to the youth before FSY conference
began, and so we were delighted to see how lots of them prepared individual and group
performances. They also used this time to prepare for the dance following dinnertime.
Our second night’s dance was themed “Uptown Hoedown” and the youth came in their
modest and catchy cowboy and cowgirl dresses. We taught them the FSY line dances and held a
dance contest. Every one of them enjoyed the event and enjoyed knowing more of the youth in
their group and other’s as well.
The exhaustion was not too much to leave the youth unable to have their Reflect and
Review and us to have our evaluation and further planning. What amazed me the most was to
see the blessings brought by preparation. I am sure that the change in the youth we were starting
to witness so far the week wouldn’t be there hadn’t our session-directing couple and teachers and
young single adult leaders studied their roles well long before the conference. Those efforts justly
27
For the Strength of Youth Conference
THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
entitled them to lead and teach with power and authority from the Spirit. The success was built
on the foundation of preparation.
The devotional was succeeded by “Preach My Gospel Activity” where one age-group was
interactively taught by the session-directing couple and the other by the coordinators separately.
The topics were chosen from Preach My Gospel which aimed to help the youth appreciate and
prepare for full-time missionary service. Following that was “Sharing the Gospel Activity” where
they had the privilege to apply what they have learned from the morning event and practice
missionary work among themselves. They were effective and enthusiastic because they came
prepare; it was a blessing to observe them feeling the joy and overcoming their fears in sharing
the gospel. A lot of them had come to better recognize the Spirit’s presence, and some of them
gained a desire and made the decision to go and serve a full-time mission.
Rehearsal and tryouts for Musical Program and Variety Show continued during free time.
And then they prepared their banner and cheer as a company. Assistant coordinators and
counselors prepared the venue and schedule for rotation of groups during “Games Night and
Cheer-off” while the coordinators with the session-directing couple and logistical administrators
served as the judges. The camaraderie and bond within the groups were undeniable, and they
seemed to totally enjoy the night even if we weren’t able to execute the complete flow of games;
there was no competition at all. They were all deserving for the “Favorite Food Night” treats.
It had been an eventful and busy day which taught me profoundly of the power of love.
Even though our counselors and assistant coordinators and session-directing couple projected
cheerful faces throughout the day, we were aware how worried and wearied they get at times.
Yet they never thought of themselves. Seeing them putting the youth first always in their priority,
as it should be, inspired me to always turn out as well and find ways I can serve more. If their
love for each participant have influenced me to be more receptive to the Spirit’s instructions, how
much more the youth? This just goes to show how that love had contributed in a large extent to
creating an environment where other fruits of the Spirit can be easily felt and embraced.
28
For the Strength of Youth Conference
THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
The much-awaited “Variety Show” and “Musical Program” finally came. It was a
spectacular happening. I found myself standing in awe while watching the youth share the
unique gifts they have; I found myself likely in the presence of angels while listening to their
songs and narrations. Our dear counselors and assistant coordinators had put immeasurable
work for its success, and as the day progressed, we knew that the work had been paid off.
We had an opportunity to be spiritually fed again during the evening devotional with our
assigned Area Seventy, Elder Raul Villanueva. All of the accomplishments the conference had
wouldn’t be possible without his dedicated priesthood leadership before and during FSY. He
expressed his gratitude to feel the strength and spirit of the youth. No one of us could ignore that
feeling especially during the Testimony Meetings that followed. More than the talents they
exhibited earlier the day, the real indicator of the conference’ success was found in the increase
of their testimonies, in the change each of them have undergone. It was humbling and
heartwarming to hear them speak and testify as sober as the young ones yet with conviction as
that of the great and noble ones. It was a fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecies of the great latter-day
work right before our eyes.
We had our FSY Area Director, Elder Abenir Pajaro, spoke to us for our final Morningside.
He shared some of his childhood and conversion experiences and related them to the youth. We
could feel the love and concern he has for each participant even if he doesn’t know all of them
personally. That final devotional motivated the youth to never stop taking courage and finding
their faith, to “press forward” and create their future.
Our session’s “Service Activity” was a culmination of Family History and Temple Work
efforts. Before FSY the youth of each ward were encouraged to perform family history research
and bring the names they found for temple proxy ordinances; they documented those activities
29
For the Strength of Youth Conference
THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
through video clips. During the Service Activity each ward either showed their videos or had a
representative share their experiences doing the said project. Though they all did the same
service, each had a unique story. Even us as young single adults were inspired to give more time
in this endeavor.
After the program, the youth proceeded to their companies for the “For the Strength of
Youth Activity”. They went to their respective rooms while the counselors took turns and
transferred to each room to teach the standards in the For the Strength of Youth booklet. I was
amazed to witness how the youth had kept their eagerness to be involved up to this point of the
conference that even after all of the classes and meetings and activities, they continually asked
questions and participated in the learning experience.
Our fellow young single adult leaders thought of deviating from the usual way of
mealtime where the youth would line-up for themselves and wait for their turns to be served by
the hotel staff. But for this final dinner with the youth, we decided to just have them take their
seats as a company while we were going around and serving the food on their tables. It wasn’t
something very big but it was fulfilling because it was inspired. It gave us assurance that as long
as we keep ourselves worthy of the Spirit, we can still be of service to our beloved youth
throughout our lives.
The final activity was themed “Dancing Through the Night”. Ladies and gentlemen in
formal/Sunday attire crowded the auditorium for the last time. Some youth who weren’t able to
sing in the Variety Show because of time shortage provided the music for the dances. Some
received prizes from winning in the Games Night and Cheer-Off and some received awards for
being best dressed or most danced. It was a night of celebration and thanksgiving. As the program
concluded, our session-directing couple led the Taking It Home portion. They gave their final
admonition to the youth whom they had grown to love dearly, and a few participants were
invited to share how their personal and group goals had been accomplished throughout the week.
Before they left for their company Reflect and Review sessions, we sang and offered a kneeling
prayer together. Tears and hugs overflowed. We all knew that the miracles wouldn’t end there
because each of us have better learned and gained for ourselves the power to create them.
While our FSY Cheer says “YOUTH, ONWARD—PRESS FORWARD”, these words sum
up what I was personally tutored by the Spirit for the whole FSY conference: “LOOK INWARD,
TURN OUTWARD.” One of my goals for FSY was to learn more of the Christlike attribute of
Meekness. Now it means to me a desire to always look inward for things of self-improvement to
be able to turn outward in service to others. I know that with the right desire, we can create the
climate of revelation that we need to endure in the path of discipleship.

For the Strength of Youth Conference
THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
BEFORE FSY:
We studied the FSY handbook carefully to know our duties and responsibilities
and the things that need to be prepared
We prayed and fasted for this great responsibility
We planned;
a) By identifying the committees needed and the people that will be
assigned to each committee such as, registration, publicity, billeting
and materials committee
b) Anticipated the scenarios (best & worst) of the daily activities and
even in the preparation stage.
We called for members in the logistics committee who have knowledge in such
assignment
Conducted series of meetings to orient members of the committee about their
responsibilities and we followed up their progress
Constant communication with the people concerned
AFTER FSY:
We gathered all documents needed for the liquidation of budget and other
pertinent documents to be reported
Conducted devotional as a follow- up activity
2) WHAT SPECIFIC CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED AND HOW WERE YOU ABLE
TO RESOLVE THEM?
The deadline of on-line registration was not followed, so there were changes in
the number of participants up to the day before FSY started, which causes the
registration coordinator to adjust the groupings she prepared and same with the
billeting coordinator, she has to adjust the room assignments as well.
31
For the Strength of Youth Conference
THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
Ward leaders did not submit the final number of participants as scheduled
Sudden changes of function rooms to be used in particular activities was
adjusted to accommodate the group who will be using it
Participant’s IDs was not delivered ahead of time, so we have to work overtime
to put the stickers for their counselor, company and room assignment at the back
of their IDs.
Prices of some materials was not anticipated.

BEFORE FSY:

For the Strength of Youth Conference
THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
DURING FSY:
- Trust the program and the Lord that everything will be done in accordance to the
His will.
- Have faith and confidence with the staff that they can perform their duties very well.
- Be always present if possible so that the coordinators can always come to confide
when needed.
- Everything that has been prepared are not final unless already presented and done.
Always rely on inspiration and continuous revelation which do comes.
- Always look for opportunity to be with the youth and find time to let them feel that
you are there for them.
- Be open for suggestions and feedbacks from the staff in connection to activities.
- Find time to visit the youth in their table during meal time and spend some time
with them.
- Be firm on decisions for everyone to follow.
- Have a nightly evaluation and planning meeting to discuss the day’s activities and
prepare for the events the following day.
- Never forget to give appreciation to the staff even for the little things that they do.
They need appreciation to keep them going.
- Always ask for something that you might be able to help the staff with.
- Be familiar with the activities for the day.
- The youth were never allowed to bring gadgets and cellphones, as well as the
counselors and assistant coordinators. This gave them the opportunity to focus on
the purpose of the activity.

2) WHAT SPECIFIC CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED AND HOW WERE YOU ABLE
TO RESOLVE THEM?
- Youth transfers from one room to another. Looked for the youth involved and
discussed the importance of following the room assignments so as to have an
accurate head count every night.
- Adjustments on the schedule of activities. Immediate dissemination of information
to the staff so that the youth will also be notified immediately.
- Some youth experienced health related issues and even some minor injuries. The
health coordinator gave the needed first aid attention. If there’s a need to bring the
youth to the hospital, the logistics couple were there to provide the needed
assistance.
- Two of the youth got contacted with sore eyes. Since we do not want any youth be
sent home, the needed medical attention was given to them. Also, all the staff were
invited to include them in their prayers and a priesthood blessing was also
administered to them. Miracle do really happen…
