Origin of the word Telangana

- Sairam Sampatirao
Origin of the word Telangana
- Various scholars and historians came up
with different theories to explain the origin of
the word Telangana.

- According to a theory by Acharya

Parabrahma Sastry, the word Telangana
originated from Trilinga or Tilinga.

- The name Trilanga a variant derived from

Tailanga is considered by some historians as
a reference to the region with three lingas
(Shiva shrines)- Kalesvaram, Srisailam, and
Draksharama.

- A prominent Sanskrit text named,

Saktisangama Tantra mentions the existence
of Tailanga Desa as a region between
Srisailam and Chola territory, it also mentions
that Tailanga-desa is the bordering region to
Andhra Desa. Many historians reject it on the
account of its lack of reliability.
- A more historical reasoning is that during
the reign of Various Islamic empires in
medieval times, the region was known as
Telugu Angana to differentiate it from the
areas where other languages were spoken.

- Other theories - The name, Telangana

emerged from the word Telivaha, which is
an ancient name for River Godavari. Many
scholars and historians reject this theory as
well since the reasoning is ambiguous.

- According to P. Sri Rama Sharma, the

word Telangana came into existence
between the period of Amir Khusrau to Abul
Fazal (Between the period of Alla-Uddin
Khalji and Akbar The Great)

Reason: Amir Khusrav used the word Tilang

and Abdul Fazl used the most well-known
among all the variants, Telangana
