Online license key download compatibility as of November 2022

As of November 2022, a required technological upgrade will unfortunately block the online download of license
keys in all versions of the PolyWorks® Metrology Suite up to 2022 IR2. Intermediate versions have been released
to solve this issue. Refer to the table that follows.

You are not affected if:

 You are working with the PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2022 IR3 and later, or

 You do not need new or modified license keys

 You are using floating licenses

To solve the situation, we offer to use one of these solutions:

Solution #1: Install your license keys manually using the PolyWorks License Manager:

You can simply import/activate your license keys manually (offline methods):

 Node-locked keys: import the license keys from a key file (.key). To obtain your license key file, contact your
PolyWorks provider.

 Computer-locked keys: follow the offline activation steps.

For detailed instructions, refer to the PolyWorks Metrology Suite Installation Guide, available on the Technical
Support Zone.

Dimension Type Examples of format

Angular Size 2X [:ANGULAR] | 45.0° | 1.0° | -2.0° |

[:ANGULAR] | 45.0° | | -2.0° |
[:ANGULAR] | 60° | 0.2° | -0.2° | (GG)CT

The first number is mandatory; it represents the nominal value. The

other two numbers represent the tolerances. As shown in the second
example, one of the limits of tolerance may be omitted.

Linear Size 2X [:LINEAR] | 10.0 | 2.5 | -2.0 |

[:LINEAR] | 10.0 | 2.5 | |
[:LINEAR] | Ø10.0 | 0.1(GX) | -0.2(GN) |

This format is similar to the one explained above for the angular size.

GD&T Controls 2X [:POSITION] | 1.0 | A | B | | INDIVIDUALLY

[:POSITION] | 1.0 | A-B | (C-D)-(E-F) |
[:POSITION] | 1.0(M) | A(L) |

The first part of the format indicates the type of tool. It could be one
of the following values: FLATNESS, CYLINDRICITY, CIRCULARITY,
STRAIGHTNESS, ANGULARITY, PARALLELISM, PERPENDICULARITY,
LINE_PROFILE, SURFACE_PROFILE, POSITION, COAXIALITY,
CONCENTRICITY, SYMMETRY, CIRCULAR_RUNOUT, TOTAL_RUNOUT.

The first section after the type of tool contains the tolerance of the
GD&T tool, followed by the datum sections. Datum sections are
optional.

Several special values are allowed (see the following list). For example, "(M)" represents a GD&T modifier that
can be added to the tolerance (maximum material condition modifier) or to a datum (maximum material
boundary).

Note that the numerical values specified in the following list are given as an example. It is possible to specify
other values. PolyWorks|Inspector provides great flexibility when using the values. Depending on the
context, however, some combinations may not apply. In this case, a warning symbol is displayed and the text
is not interpreted as a control. Hover the mouse pointer over the symbol for more information on the
warning.

Portable metrology plug-ins

 A message is now displayed the first time the user loads a plug-in that is not developed by InnovMetric.

CMM plug-ins

 The CNC CMM plug-in now supports the Nikon LC15DxG2 scanner.

 Since the PolyWorks 2022 Major Release, the I++ CMM plug-in fully supports 5-axis movements and head
touch measurements for supported probe heads. The I++ Multi-Axis Utilities toolbar was also introduced for
the I++ CMM plug-in, offering tools to optimize measurement sequence steps for multi-axis movements and
head touch measurements. These tools include Insert Multi-Axis Go to Position Steps into Sequence,
which is used to combine tool orientation changes and go to positions into 5-axis movements.

Now, users have access to the Insert Multi-Axis Go to Position Steps

into Sequence button of the I++ Multi-Axis Utilities toolbar directly in the
CNC CMM plug-in. This makes it possible to combine tool orientation
changes and go to position steps into 5-axis movements when preparing
a measurement sequence using the CNC CMM plug-in, if desired. Note
that to do so, the I++ CMM plug-in must be loaded.

This is especially useful when preparing a collision-free measurement sequence in the CNC CMM plug-in
using the Offline Simulation mode. Then, executing the measurement sequence using the I++ CMM plug-in
with a different server application than the Renishaw UCCserver, such as the Zeiss I++ DME Server.

Note the following:

PolyWorks|Inspector

 PolyWorks now supports CAD models saved in the QIF (Quality Information Framework) format. The
corresponding translator needs to be purchased. Note the following:

 The QIF format supports the Import Product Manufacturing Information (PMI) option. Like the other
translators, it benefits from the enhanced PMI import that was introduced in the major release of
PolyWorks 2022.

 When importing CAD models from QIF format, any saved views are imported in PolyWorks|Inspector as
control views.

To import the CAD models saved in QIF format, use the File > Import > CAD Models menu item.

 Since the major release of PolyWorks 2022, nominal and measured values of custom controls can be
manually configured in the Geometry Controls pane. Now, it is also possible to edit the nominal and
measured values of standard dimensional controls of features. To do so, click in a Nominal or Measured cell
and set the appropriate value. When the value is changed, it is identified by an icon, as shown in the example.

Changing the dimensional control of a feature does not change the position of the primitive. The modified
value is only used when displaying the dimensional controls (for example, in the Geometry Controls pane, in
annotations, and in reports) or when directly manipulating the dimensional controls using a macro command
(for example, MEASURE CONTROL * commands).

 Since the major release of PolyWorks 2022, controls imported from CAD models that are not natively
supported in PolyWorks|Inspector are displayed as custom controls and have their nominal and measured
values manually configured in PolyWorks|Inspector. Now, to prevent a user from entering a measured value

PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2022 - Release Notes 34

2022 IR1

without validating the tolerance, a value of “0.0” is specified as the tolerance value for these controls. The user
must therefore change this value.

 The following macro commands have been added to get the display name of the GD&T controls or custom
controls of the selected measurement object. The control display name corresponds to the name that is
displayed in the Feature Navigator, for example Position A B C instead of Position 1.

 MEASURE CONTROL DISPLAY_NAME GET

 TREEVIEW OBJECT PROPERTIES DIMENSION DISPLAY_NAME GET

 In the PolyWorks 2022 major release, the new measurement guide technology was introduced. Measurement
guides are created from measured feature components and can be used instead of nominal feature
components to perform inspections. This is especially useful, for example, when the CAD model is not
available.

Since measured primitives can now be extracted from measurement guides, it has become important that
the measurement guide can be trimmed to avoid using Data points that are not part of the feature.

The Trim using reference object elements parameter was already offered when creating surface-based
features to trim the fitted primitive using the elements of the Reference object, but not the Data object.

That parameter has been modified to now also consider the elements of the Data object and has been
renamed to Trim using surface object elements. When selected, the extracted primitive of the surface-
based features is trimmed using surface object elements and, in turn, the measurement guide is also
trimmed.

 The Trim using surface object elements parameter is offered in the Create Features and the Define
Measured Feature Components dialog boxes when using the Fit or Pick on Polygonal Model creation
methods.

 The parameter is also offered on the Measurement tab of the property sheet of surface-based features
when the measurement method is set to Extract.

 For extracted surface-based features, an option has been added to specify whether the extracted
features will be trimmed or not by default. The new option, which is cleared by default, can be found on

Suite 2022. To obtain your new license key file, contact your PolyWorks provider.

PolyWorks|Inspector

Inspect multiple pieces efficiently without CAD data

Guide feature measurement and automate feature extraction in the absence of nominal feature components.

 Probe features on a first piece, then be automatically guided by the measured feature components of the first
piece when probing subsequent pieces

 Scan a first piece, use any interactive tool to create measured primitives from point cloud data, then convert
all the measured feature components into measurement guides to guide feature scanning and automate the
extraction of measured feature components on subsequent pieces

 Inject a CAD model later on in the process if desired, create nominal feature components and GD&T controls,
and let PolyWorks|Inspector automatically propagate these changes to all inspected pieces

New measurement guide technology

In earlier versions of PolyWorks, multipiece inspection was mainly based on the use of nominal feature
components. It is now possible to perform a multipiece inspection just as efficiently even when the project does
not contain any nominal feature components. The same universal workflow applies. The inspection is performed
using new measurement guides instead of nominal feature components. Measurement guides are created from
measured feature components. Related improvements were also made to existing functionalities.

As a result, users can benefit from improved probing guidance and complete scanning guidance, plus the
automatic extraction of all features from the scanned data.

PolyWorks|Inspector 2022 offers an innovative workflow for efficiently performing multipiece inspections even
without any CAD data.

This workflow is divided into four main steps:

1. Align measured datums to the world coordinate system for the first piece;

2. Create features on the first piece;

3. Add nominal values and tolerances to feature controls (optional);

4. Efficiently measure subsequent pieces based on the new measurement guide technology.

PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2022 - Release Notes 45

2022 IR0 Major Release

This workflow is described in more detail in the following subsections.

1. Align measured datums to the world coordinate system for the first piece

Create the measured datums using the standard creation methods

offered by PolyWorks. Then, align the datums to the world
coordinate system using an alignment operation, such as the
Plane, Axis, Center Point alignment (as shown to the right) or the
Perpendicular Planes alignment.

Note that the following functionalities are now saved in the feature
properties:

 Pick on Polygonal Model (previously named Extract

Primitives from Polygonal Models);

 Fit (when the submethod is Fit to Elements or Pick, then Fit).

This provides more guidance when performing alignments on

subsequent pieces for datums created from scanned data.

2. Create features on the first piece

Create the measured features on the first piece using one of the creation methods offered (typically by
probing, by picking on a polygonal model, or by fitting).

3. Add nominal values and tolerances to feature controls (optional)

Two scenarios are possible:

 No CAD model is available

Using the information provided on the engineering drawing, type in the nominal values in the Geometry
Controls pane and generate the inspection reports.

 A CAD model becomes available

At any point during the process, a CAD model can be imported into the inspection project. The Extract
Nominal functionality of PolyWorks|Inspector can then be used to automatically extract the nominal
feature components from the measured feature components. New GD&T controls can be created,
changes can be propagated to already-measured pieces, and inspection results can be generated.

PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2022 - Release Notes 46

2022 IR0 Major Release

4. Efficiently measure subsequent pieces based on the new measurement guide technology

When the measured primitives are created from scanned data, select those features in the tree view, except
the datums used for the alignment, then right-click, and select Extract Measured.

As a result, measurement guides are created from the measured feature components, and the extraction
source is automatically set to Measurement Guide for those features. Then, when inspecting subsequent
pieces in a multipiece inspection, all features from the scanned data will be automatically extracted.

At this point, the measurement guides have been created for the measured feature components that do not
have any corresponding nominal component. If measurement guides are missing for some features, they will
be automatically created from the measured feature components of the current piece as soon as a New
Piece is created.

Note that the extraction source can be viewed, and edited, in the new Extraction source list box located on
the Measurement tab of the feature property sheet (as shown). This list box has been added since the
Extract Measured functionality is no longer limited to extracting from the nominal feature components. Two
choices are offered: Measurement Guide and Nominal Primitive.

Note the following about measurement guides:

 Measurement guides should be created in a proper repeatable alignment. Once created, they will not
move with the Data object, just like nominal components.

 At any time, measurement guides can be manually created by choosing the Measure > Features > Create
Measurement Guide menu item.

PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2022 - Release Notes 47

2022 IR0 Major Release

 By default, measurement guides are invisible, except in the following cases:

 When probing or scanning subsequent pieces, the measurement guides of all features are displayed
to guide the operation, as if CAD data was available. An example is shown in (a) when probing, and
in (b) when scanning;
(a) (b)

 When the properties dialog box is open for the features selected in the tree view;

 When the Define Measured Feature Components dialog box is displayed;

 When selecting View > Restore > [All] Measurement Guides, provided that the corresponding features
are also visible in the 3D scene.

 Measurement guides can also be hidden (View > Hide > [All] Measurement Guides) or deleted (Measure >
Features > Delete Measurement Guide).

Additional improvements

Improvements have been made to the following functionalities:

 The Extract Primitives from Polygonal Models functionality has been renamed Pick on Polygonal Model,
and has been moved to the feature creation dialog box. The parameters remain the same as before, except
that a name and a datum feature label can now be specified when the feature is created.

PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2022 - Release Notes 48

2022 IR0 Major Release

 The following functionalities, as well as their parameters, are now defined at the feature level:

 Pick on Polygonal Model;

 Fit (when the Fit to Elements or Pick, then Fit submethod is used).

They are now available as PolyWorks standard measurement methods. When inspecting multiple pieces, the
method is maintained and can be automatically repeated from one piece to another. In the example shown
in (a), the Fit method as well as the Fit to Elements submethod have been used to create the measured
feature component. In (b), the method, the submethod, and their parameters are saved in the feature
properties.

(a) (b)

Accelerate feature extraction on a batch of highly deviated pieces

Leverage the PolyWorks|Inspector 2022 measurement guide technology to automate and speed up the
extraction of measured feature components on highly and similarly deviated pieces:

 Use feature extraction groups or manual selections to reliably extract measured feature components on a
first highly deviated piece, then convert these measured feature components into measurement guides

 Quickly extract the measured feature components of subsequent highly deviated pieces using measurement
guides as reference geometries

PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2022 - Release Notes 49

Inspecting highly deviated pieces was possible in PolyWorks. However, thanks to the measurement guide
technology (explained in the previous section), the inspection of such pieces is even faster and more efficient.

The following example illustrates a piece that has large deviations between the nominal component (in blue) and
the scanned data (in gold).

When measuring highly deviated features that do not extract well, as shown in the example, it is now possible to
pick their measured component and use them as optimally located measurement guides for future extraction
operations. When measuring those features on subsequent pieces, their measurement guides are used, instead
of their nominals, to ensure accurate feature scanning guidance.

To prepare the project to inspect highly deviated pieces:

1. Create the measured primitives using one of the creation methods

offered.

2. In the tree view, select the features to be inspected, then right-click

and select Properties.

3. In the Properties dialog box, set the measurement method to

Extract.

4. Set the extraction source to Measurement Guide.

5. Make sure that the Extraction group check box is cleared.

6. Click Apply.

7. Extract the measured feature components (if it has not already

been done) by right-clicking the features in the tree view and
selecting Extract Measured.

PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2022 - Release Notes 50

2022 IR0 Major Release

The measurement guides will automatically be created from the measured feature components. Subsequent
pieces can then be inspected.

In the example shown, the arrows indicate the measurement guides that will be used instead of the nominal
feature components. Measured feature components will then be successfully extracted, and feature scanning
guidance will also be improved.

Create smart first article inspection reports within Excel

Quickly publish an AS9102 and PPAP-compliant First Article Inspection Report by measuring a piece from the
first production run in PolyWorks|Inspector 2022 and automatically transferring the results to the provided FAIR
template in Microsoft Excel.

Publishing an FAI report

FAI reports, or FAIR, will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but generally they contain a set of data fields
used for traceability and to certify that the production process will meet design requirements. The reports are
typically generated during preproduction trials, and after major changes to the manufacturing process.

Transcribing First Article Inspection results to an associated reporting form can be an error-prone and time-
consuming process. Users now have an FAI report solution embedded within PolyWorks|Inspector 2022,
offering a digital process to create first article inspection reports that are easily updatable and compliant with
the AS9102 Rev B standard and AIAG’s PPAP dimensional results within Microsoft Excel.

Leverage new universal data hub for your digital processes

Ensure the digital interoperability of your CAD modeling, Model-Based Definition, and 3D measurement
solutions:

 Import all GD&T control types from native CAD to ensure digital interoperability with the product definition
processes

Enhanced PMI import

The import of PMI information in PolyWorks|Inspector has been reworked and improved, as well as the import
log which now details the imported characteristics.

The following improvements were made:

 The CAD import core processing has been redesigned for the CATIA V4/V5/V6, Creo (Pro/E), NX (UG), Inventor,
SOLIDWORKS, ACIS SAT, and VDA-FS formats. Assembly product structure import was enhanced.

 The CAD PMI extraction has been completely reviewed for both parts and assemblies. Semantic PMI
information extraction is processed according to the specified GD&T standard option (ISO or ASME) defined
in the PolyWorks|Inspector Options dialog box. Problematic PMI controls are not discarded, but are imported
as custom controls for the user to review them.

 The PMI import log, created when importing a CAD model containing PMI information or a PMI+Loop
measurement plan, is now clearer and more visual, displaying the detailed import status for each individual
control.

To allow PMI import, the Import Product Manufacturing Information (PMI) check box on the Objects >
Reference/Data > CAD Models page of the PolyWorks|Inspector Options dialog box must be selected, as
shown. This new option replaces the Import features and controls check boxes previously available in the
subpages of the different CAD formats, such as CATIA or Creo (Pro/E). Note that the Objects > Reference/
Data > CAD Models > JT page has been removed, as it only contained the previously mentioned check box.

This option page also contains the new Show log automatically after import option check box, that allows
displaying the PMI import log automatically after import when selected.

PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2022 - Release Notes 60

2022 IR0 Major Release

After the import is completed, the PMI import logs can be accessed at any time through the new Tools > Reference
Objects > Show PMI Import Logs menu item. The log associated with a specific CAD model can also be accessed
through the contextual menu displayed when right-clicking the CAD model in the tree view. Note that PMI+Loop
measurement plans must be imported with the CAD model to be able to reopen their PMI import log.

 The new PMI import log is available for the CATIA V5 and V6, Creo (Pro/E), NX (UG), ACIS SAT, and
SOLIDWORKS CAD formats. It contains the following sections:

 The header offers general information about the imported CAD file or CAD assembly file. An
example is shown.

 The statistics section offers a table that displays information about the import status of
characteristics. It indicates the number of characteristics that were not imported, that have a
warning, and that have been imported successfully without any issues. When the import is done as
a replacement, a second table displays the number of characteristics that were added, replaced, or
removed. Examples are shown. Note that each section containing at least one piece can be clicked
to filter the characteristics in the next section.

 The General Messages section displays warning and error messages that are not linked to a specific
characteristic. An example is shown.

 The Bill of Characteristics section contains the main part of the PMI import log, a table that lists all
the imported characteristics, as well as their numbers, control icons, associated objects, messages,
import status, and, if applicable, replacement status. An example is shown.

To the left, a search box and import status check boxes allow filtering the controls displayed in the
adjacent table. The button to the right of the search box displays a list of the columns with adjacent
check boxes that allows displaying or hiding the various columns in the table. Note that the controls
can also be sorted by clicking the column headers.

Import and manage unsupported GD&T controls

Controls imported from CAD models that are not natively supported in PolyWorks|Inspector can now be
displayed as custom controls and have their nominal and measured values manually configured in
PolyWorks|Inspector.

 Importing a CAD model with the Import Product Manufacturing Information (PMI) option enabled
automatically creates a custom control for each control non-natively supported in PolyWorks|Inspector that
it contains.

 The custom controls are displayed with the other controls in several dialog boxes:

 In the Geometry Controls pane, the custom controls are displayed in the same way as the GD&T controls.
They are identified by an icon, as shown to the right. The check box that allows controlling the dimension
is not available for these controls. When multiple features are selected, only custom controls that are
identical and have the same name on all features are displayed.

Improve probing operator performance by deploying mixed-reality display tech-

nology

Experience getting visual guidance and feedback in front of your eyes along with menus offering common
probing tools:

 Measure correctly each time following the guidance geometry and measurement instructions overlaid on the
inspected piece

 Evaluate the outcome by visualizing probed points, measurement results, and the digital readout in real time

 Invoke common probing functionalities by using our intuitive user interface

Reinventing probing workflows with mixed reality

When probing, operators often need to look back at the computer to know what to measure or have to walk
back to the computer to start new measurements or perform various tasks. With a laser tracker, operators often
need to use a remote control to acquire points or stop a measurement. PolyWorks|AR transforms the user
experience of probing operators by leveraging the holograms and gesture recognition technology of the
Microsoft HoloLens 2 smart glasses.

A new innovation for probing with laser trackers or arms, PolyWorks|AR now provides probing operators with all
the guidance, tools, and feedback needed to correctly probe pieces without having to glance or go back to the
computer. This workflow-changing technology highly improves ergonomics and efficiency, such as for large scale
laser tracker inspections and while probing hard-to-reach areas.

Once a PolyWorks|Inspector project is ready, containing measurement objects that need to be probed,
operators can perform the following mixed-reality probing workflow, now supported natively in PolyWorks|AR
2022:

1. Open and connect to the PolyWorks|Inspector project in PolyWorks|AR.

2. Use Localization Tools to position the target hologram over the physical part.

3. Launch the Play Inspection tool.

4. Start probing measurement objects with the help of new guidance holograms and gesture-based menus.

Operators can make use of new:

 Measurement guidance

 Intuitive gesture-based menus and submenus to invoke commonly-used probing operations,

including a new Come to Me functionality that can be used when the laser beam is lost to send the
beam to the operator

 Real-time measurement feedback

5. End the probing acquisition session and review all the measurement results directly on the part.

6. Save the project. Operators can also create a new piece, if desired, for a multipiece inspection.

This workflow is described in more detail in the following subsections.

Open and connect to the PolyWorks|Inspector project in PolyWorks|AR.

2. Use Localization Tools to position the target hologram over the physical part

Operators can position the target hologram over the physical part using the various existing tools found in
the Localization Tools menu, offered through air tapping the corresponding button shown to the right.

Note that once the target hologram is correctly positioned over the physical part using any of the existing
techniques, the alignment can easily be saved in a QR code, as well as in the PolyWorks|Inspector project,
through the QR Code Manager submenu.

In the QR Code Manager submenu, once

operators air tap Save, they can look at the desired
QR code through the HoloLens to save the
localization between the target hologram and the
physical part in that QR code. A message is
displayed when it is successfully saved in the QR
code.

Once saved in a QR code, operators can later air

tap Relocate and look at the QR code in the real
world through the HoloLens to scan it and find and
apply the localization that has already been saved
in that QR code.

 Measurement guidance

PolyWorks|AR automatically converts the guidance information embedded in the PolyWorks|Inspector

project into holograms overlaid on the pieces being measured.

More specifically, the following holograms are shown in PolyWorks|AR to guide operators during probing
acquisition sessions. Note that the CAD model hologram is automatically hidden so as not to obstruct
the operator’s view.

 Orange Guidance Arrows to guide operators to the object when they are far from the object to
measure, as shown for point 4 in (a).

 Annotations that point to the feature to measure, as shown for point 4 in (a) and plane 3 in (b).

 Simple Object Outlines, as displayed in blue in (b), allowing operators to see the physical part with
minimal obstruction.

 The next measurement point to probe, displayed in orange as shown in (b). Once the probe tip is at
the right location, the point turns green indicating to the operator that they can probe the point at
that location.

 Probed points, displayed in white, as shown in (b).

 Additional probing information in a menu that is displayed, shown in (a), which corresponds to some
of the same information that is displayed in the Guiding Zone when using the Play Inspection tool
and the Probing Status window in PolyWorks|Inspector. This includes the:

- Name of the object being measured and the object type icon.

- Number of probed Data points and number of points left to complete the measurement (0, 0/6,
etc.).

- Current measurement sequence step in the probing process (constraining plane, compensation
point, etc.).

- Guiding instructions, automatic or custom text configured in PolyWorks|Inspector.

The menu also conveniently offers tools that can be used during the probing process, such as
displaying the Digital Readout window. These menus and submenus are explained in more detail in
the following subsection.

Note the following:

 Measurement guidance holograms are supported for the following operations:

- Probing the following objects: Features (except lines and slabs) and comparison points (except
cross-section comparison points)

- Performing a Surface Points alignment

 Operators are also notified in PolyWorks|AR of any error messages displayed in

PolyWorks|Inspector through an information dialog box. If a message dialog box is displayed, all
holographic elements are hidden until a selection is made in the dialog box in PolyWorks|Inspector.

 Several improvements have been made to the measurement path algorithm in relation to go to position
points and tool orientation changes in a measurement sequence:

 When using the assisted sequencing technology to generate a measurement sequence:

 The measurement path contains less tool orientation changes.

 When selecting tool orientation angles, the assisted sequencing technology now prioritizes more
common tool orientation angles such as 90° or 45°.

 Previously, the assisted sequencing technology used the next available safe tool orientation. Now,
the assisted sequencing technology does not select the next available tool orientation but rather one
that is farther away from the part.

 The following improvements apply when using the assisted sequencing technology as well as when using
the possible actions measurement sequence fixers and when allowing optimization:

 The algorithm now finds better solutions for difficult areas of the measurement path, for example,
when the beginning and the ending of the measurement path are close to the part.

 The measurement sequence now contains less go to position points.

Optimize CNC CMM probing sequences for the Renishaw PH20 probe head

Transform collision-free 3-axis CNC CMM sequences into optimal 5-axis sequences by efficiently integrating 5-
axis moves and head touch probing.

When using the I++ CMM plug-in, Renishaw PH20 probe heads were previously only supported for 3-axis
operations. The I++ CMM plug-in now fully supports the PH20 probe head when using the UCCserver application,
making 5-axis movements and head touch measurements possible. This is especially useful when measuring
complex machined parts, where high accuracy is required at high speeds.

Head touch measurements

PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2022 - Release Notes 83

2022 IR0 Major Release

Now that 5-axis movements and head touch measurements are supported for the PH20 probe head, PolyWorks
offers a quick and easy two-phase approach to preparing an optimized measurement sequence to CNC probe
objects when using the Renishaw PH20 probe head with the UCCserver application:

 Phase 1: Use existing assisted sequencing tools to generate a collision-free measurement sequence in 3-axis
mode;

 Phase 2: Use new tools to optimize the measurement sequence for the PH20 probe head by:

 Combining tool orientation changes and go-to positions into 5-axis movements.

 Using head-touch measurement to gain speed when CNC probing features and comparison points.

The new tools offered to complete Phase 2 can be found on the new I++ Multi-Axis Utilities toolbar.

These phases can be completed using the I++ CMM plug-in with the Renishaw UCCserver application either while
in the offline or online mode, though it is suggested to complete the phases while in the offline mode. The
inferred calibration mode must also be used.

Once Phase 1 and Phase 2 are completed and the measurement sequence has been optimized for a PH20 probe
head and is collision-free, users can then connect to the UCCserver to execute the measurement sequence
online. If desired, they can execute the measurement sequence step by step to validate the behavior before
executing the measurement sequence.

Note the following:

 This two-phase workflow to optimize a measurement sequence for the Renishaw PH20 probe head is also
supported for Renishaw REVO probe heads.

 The term multi-axis refers to both 5-axis and 6-axis operations.

PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2022 - Release Notes 84

2022 IR0 Major Release

 Multi-axis movements are also supported for different probe heads as supported by the Hexagon PC-DMIS
and Zeiss I++ DME Server applications.

The new two-phase workflow, as well as the new toolbar, are explained in more detail in the following
paragraphs.

The new I++ Multi-Axis Utilities toolbar

The new I++ Multi-Axis Utilities toolbar is offered to help users perform the operations needed to optimize
measurement sequence steps for the PH20 probe head, including specifying CNC parameters specific to the
Renishaw probe head, combining tool orientation changes and go-to positions into multi-axis movements, and
using head touch measurement steps for features and comparison points.

This toolbar, which was previously only available in the Macro Zone of the PolyWorks Technical Support Zone, is
now directly offered in PolyWorks|Inspector. Note that the toolbar is hidden by default and can be displayed by
selecting it on the Toolbars tab of the Customize Visual Layout dialog box. It can also be selected from the list of
toolbars offered in the shortcut menu when right-clicking over an empty area under the title bar.

These buttons are typically used during Phase 2 of the workflow and will be described in more detail in that
section.

Steps into Sequence Measurement for Features

Phase 1: Use the existing assisted sequencing technology to generate an optimal collision-free
measurement sequence for 3-axis operations

To save time when programming a measurement sequence, the assisted sequencing technology can be used to
generate an optimal collision-free measurement sequence in 3-axis mode. This can be done when using the
Renishaw UCCserver offline to prepare the measurement sequence before executing the sequence in online
mode.

Before using the assisted sequencing tool, users must first insert the standard initial steps when preparing a
measurement sequence in 3-axis mode:

1. Configure measurement object properties, such as selecting the CNC Probe measurement method and
specifying the number of points to probe for each feature. These properties can be edited as many times as
necessary. Note that if a constraining plane is used, a plane feature should be used since the Probe Local
Plane method is not supported.

2. Insert standard initial measurement sequence steps such as the alignment, coordinate system, etc. Note that
the world coordinate system must be used.

3. Perform the CMM Prealignment. If the part is difficult to prealign, a Surface Points alignment can be used.

PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2022 - Release Notes 85

2022 IR0 Major Release

Once a measurement sequence contains a measurement context and the required alignments, users can then
easily add selected objects to the sequence while creating an optimized measurement path by either using the
Add Objects to Sequence dialog box or by using the corresponding toolbar in the 3D scene.

Users save time when preparing a measurement sequence thanks to the existing innovative assisted sequencing
technology used to add objects to a sequence. The smart technology automatically takes care of the following to
generate an efficient path, all while avoiding collisions, including:

 Determining if different tool orientations are needed and inserting them at the right locations within the
sequence.

 Adding go to position points, avoiding collisions and out-of-reach issues.

 Only allowing the addition of measurement objects to a sequence once, avoiding duplicates.

Collision detection on multi-axis operations is not available yet. That is why the assisted sequencing technology
is used to generate a collision-free measurement sequence before combining the operations into multi-axis
operations.

Collision detection, which is activated by default, flags any issues that may need further investigation if needed. If
there are any issues, users can also use the Analyze Path tool, offered under the Tools menu item of the
Sequence Editor pane.

Phase 2: Using new tools to easily optimize a measurement sequence for a PH20 probe head

In Phase 1, a collision-free 3-axis CMM measurement sequence was generated with the assisted sequencing
technology, using the UCCserver offline mode, to be able to CNC probe the corresponding objects.

Now, the user can easily optimize the measurement sequence for the PH20 probe head using the I++ Multi-Axis
Utilities toolbar, which offers the following operations:

 Inserting Renishaw probe head CNC parameters.

 Combining Tool Orientation and Go to Position steps into multi-axis movements.

 Editing object properties to use the head touch measurement method, a new object measurement script
offered for features and comparison points.

Once these operations are completed, the user can then connect to the UCCserver online and execute the
measurement sequence.

The operations offered on the I++ Multi-Axis Utilities toolbar are explained in the subsections that follow and
would typically be used in the following order.

1. Insert Renishaw Probe Head CNC Parameters Step into Sequence

The corresponding button, shown to the right, of the I++ Multi-Axis Utilities toolbar inserts a CNC parameters
macro script step that is specific to the Renishaw probe head, into the measurement sequence. The step is
inserted above the first selected step or, if no steps are selected, at the end of the sequence. This step should
be inserted before any 5-axis movements or head touch measurements.

The default Renishaw probe head CNC parameter values in the macro script correspond to the Renishaw
recommended default values. If desired, users can edit the CNC parameter values by editing the macro script
in the Macro Script Editor pane, which is displayed when pressing the Edit button of the Edit step dialog box.

2. Insert Multi-Axis Go to Position Steps into Sequence

The corresponding button, shown to the right, of the I++ Multi-Axis Utilities toolbar groups the selected Tool
Orientation and Go to Position steps into 5-axis movements. Since the PolyWorks assisted sequencing
technology has already defined the tool orientations to be used, they now just need to be combined into 5-
axis movements.

PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2022 - Release Notes 87

2022 IR0 Major Release

To do so, select the Tool Orientation steps in the measurement sequence, as well as the Go to Position steps
right before or after those tool orientation changes. Then press the toolbar button to combine the selected
steps into 5-axis movements.

The steps are grouped into the Multi-Axis Go To Position Group step, shown in (a), which is inserted into the
sequence above the first selected step or, if no steps are selected, at the end of the sequence. The step
contains the corresponding macro script for the 5-axis movement, as well as the tool orientation and go to
position, shown in (b), which is displayed when expanding the step.

(a) (b)

A Multi-Axis Go To Position Group step combines the tool orientation change and the go to position steps
to perform them simultaneously using the associated macro script. More than one pair of tool orientation
and go to position steps can be selected at a time. If a tool orientation change has go to position steps both
right before and after it, users can select the one that is the most relevant.

PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2022 - Release Notes 88

2022 IR0 Major Release

3. Renishaw Head Touch Measurements

Once the Renishaw probe head CNC parameters have been inserted, and all tool orientation changes and go
to positions have been combined into 5-axis movements, users can then modify the object measurement
parameters for head touch measurements. This includes changing the CNC Probe measurement method to
the new CNC Probe Using Head Touch scripted measurement method. This can be done by measurement
object type, for features and comparison points. Note that collision detection is not supported for this
scripted measurement method.

 For features, users can select the objects in the tree view and press the Renishaw Head Touch
Measurement for Features button, shown to the right, on the I++ Multi-Axis Utilities toolbar, which
displays the corresponding dialog box.

In the Features list box, users can select which

features will be measured using head touches,
choosing from all the supported features available
in the project. Note that the features selected in the
tree view are selected in the list box by default.

Next, they can specify the type of movement to use

between each measured point:

 Movement along the axis of the hole to be

measured. Then, using head touches to
acquire points from the center of the feature
using a rotational movement. This item is
supported for internal circle, cylinder, and cone
features.

 5-axis movements between each measured

point, while still using only head touches to
acquire points.

 3-axis movements (fixed tool orientation angle)

between each measured point, while still using
only head touches to acquire points.

The Orient tool along hole axis check box is offered to enable the tool orientation to change based on
the hole axis. The tool orientation change is done during the preceding clearance movement, using the
5 axes simultaneously. If the check box is cleared, the current tool orientation is used. This parameter
must be used for the Keep probe head along hole axis type.

Lastly, users can specify whether the selected features are inserted into the measurement sequence,
inserting the corresponding steps and object measurement script above the first selected step or, if no
steps are selected, at the end of the sequence. Note that the Insert measurement objects into
sequence check box is cleared by default since, when using the two-phase workflow, the features have
already been added to the measurement sequence in Phase 1 using the assisted sequencing technology.

2022 IR0 Major Release

 For comparison points, users can select the objects in the tree view and press the Renishaw Head Touch
Measurement for Comparison Points button, shown to the right, of the I++ Multi-Axis Utilities toolbar,
which displays the corresponding dialog box.

In the Comparison points list box, users can select

which comparison points will be measured using
head touches, choosing from all the comparison
points available in the project. Note that the
comparison points selected in the tree view are
selected by default in the list box.

Next, they can specify the type of movement to use

between each measured point:

 5-axis movements between each measured

point, while still using only head touches to
acquire points.

 3-axis movements (fixed tool orientation angle)

between each measured point, while still using
only head touches to acquire points.

The Optimize performance by grouping consecutive measurement objects check box, which is
selected by default, enables a different sequence of steps to CNC probe a group of comparison points in
a more efficient way. Instead of assigning an object measurement script to each comparison point, a
single object measurement script is used for the corresponding Comparison Point Group. This applies
to all selected comparison points that are consecutive in the measurement sequence.

Lastly, users can specify whether the selected comparison points are inserted into the measurement
sequence, inserting the corresponding Comparison Point Group step, shown in (a), above the first
selected step or, if no steps are selected, at the end of the sequence. The step contains the corresponding
macro script, as well as the comparison points in that group, which are displayed as ignored, when the
step is expanded, shown in (b). Note that the Insert measurement objects into sequence check box is
cleared by default since, when using the two-phase workflow, the comparison points have already been
added to the measurement sequence in Phase 1 using the assisted sequencing technology.
