Authority of India (Irdai), to ensure interoperability and faster
processing of health insurance claims.

 The NHA and Irdai last year joined hands to operationalise the NHCX.

  The Irdai, through a circular in June 2023, had advised all insurers and
providers to onboard the NHCX.

 Close to 50 insurance companies, nearly 250 major private hospitals,

and other stakeholders have been holding meetings and participating in
workshops jointly conducted by NHA and Irdai for full integration of
the health insurance companies with NHCX.

  The regulator also fined Yes Bank Rs. 91 lakh, for violation of certain
norms on ‘Customer Service in Banks’, and ‘Un-authorised Operation of
lnternal/Office.

 The bank inspection for FY22 showed that the private sector lender had
levied charges for non-maintenance of minimum balance in certain
savings accounts having insufficient/zero balance and had opened and
operated certain internal accounts in the name of its customers for
unauthorised purposes like parking funds and routing customer
transactions.

Recent Penalties imposed on Banks by RBI

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed Rs 3.10 lakh penalty on Hero
Fincorp Ltd for rule violations.
• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 10 lakh
on NABFINS Limited, a subsidiary of NABARD, for non-compliance with
certain rules.
• IDFC First Bank (Rs.1 crore) – for non-compliance with certain directions on
‘Loans and Advances – Statutory and Other Restrictions’.
• LIC Housing Finance (Rs. 7 lakh) – for non-compliance with certain
provisions of the Fair Practices Code
• Nashik’s Janalaxmi Cooperative Bank (59.90 lakh) – for non-compliance with
certain regulatory norms.
• Solapur Janata Sahakari Bank (28.30 lakh) – For sanctioning fresh loans
carrying risk weights of more than 100 per cent in FY22.
• Chikkamagaluru District Cooperative Central Bank, Karnataka (50,000
rupees) – for delay in reporting of frauds toh NABARD Rural Development
(NABARD)
• DCB Bank (63.6 lakh) – for non-compliance with certain directions related to
‘interest rate on advances’

Ques : What is BHIM Aadhaar Pay ?

 BHIM Aadhaar Pay was launched by the Government of India (GoI)

on April 14, 2017, as a merchant-based mobile application for accepting
payments from customers.

 The BHIM Aadhaar Pay service is currently available only in India and
operates 24x7 through merchants.

 NPCI does not charge any fees to merchants or customers for transactions
made on BHIM Aadhaar Pay.

 BHIM Aadhaar Pay functions only with banks that are live on the BHIM
Aadhaar Pay service.
 For AEPS transactions and BHIM Aadhaar pay banks have put a
standardised limit of 5 cash withdrawal per month.

 There is a cap of INR 50,000 on total transactions per month for

everyone.

 The maximum withdrawal limit for AEPS cash withdrawals is 10,000 per
transaction.

 While some banks may allow transactions totaling up to INR 50,000 in a

day, the limit of Rs. 10,000 per AEPS cash withdrawal ensures
uniformity and security across different banks.

 Ques : What are NPAs ?

 NPA expands to non-performing assets (NPA). Reserve Bank of India

defines Non Performing Assets in India as any advance or loan that is
overdue for more than 90 days.

 Asset means anything that is owned. For banks, a loan is an asset because
the interest we pay on these loans is one of the most significant sources of
income for the bank.

 When customers, retail or corporates, are not able to pay the interest, the
asset becomes ‘non-performing’ for the bank because it is not earning
anything for the bank. Therefore, RBI has defined NPAs as assets that
stop generating income for them.

 When the ratio of NPAs in a bank's loan portfolio rises, its income and
profitability fall, its capacity to lend falls, and the possibility of loan
defaults and write-offs rise.

 To address this issue, the government and the Reserve Bank of India have
introduced various policies and methods to manage and reduce the
amount of non-performing assets (NPAs) in the banking sector.
