3. Installation

Mounting the repeater

The Fiplex Compact Repeater is designed for outdoor usage with a weather proof outdoor cabinet that can
be mounted without any kind of shelter from rain, snow or hail.
However, to improve reliability, it is recommended to mount the repeater on a site with some kind of shelter
from direct exposure to sun, rain, snow and hailing.

We extremely recommend not operating the repeater under very bad weather conditions, such as:
- Intense rainfall, snowfall or hail
- Storm or high wind
- Extremely low or high temperature
- High humidity of the air

Mounting

1. Mount the bracket

The repeater can be mounted on a wall or pole. These mounting cases are shown below in Figure 1 and

5. Starting Operation

BE SURE THAT “TO MOBILE” AND “TO BASE” PORTS ARE PROPERLY
LOADED EITHER WITH 50 OHMS DUMMY LOADS, OR RADIATING
SYSTEM.

REPEATER IS FACTORY PRE-CONFIGURED WITH MINIMUM GAIN AND

DISABLED POWER AMPLIFIERS, TO AVOID THAT REPEATER INTERFERE
DURING STARTING PROCESS

1. Turn on the repeater, connect computer to repeater through USB cable, and run Fiplex Control
Software. Defaullt configuration is: minimum gain (60dB) and disabled power amplifier at UL and DL
bands. If repeater is not configured with this default configuration, please disable power amplifiers and
set gain to 60dB at UL and DL band

2. Setup desired channel frequencies. Since Fiplex Repeater is channel selective, user has to know what
frequencies are used in base station. Moreover, for each channel is necessary to set system
modulation: TETRA, TETRAPOL, P25 PHASE1, P25 PHASE2, DMR or NADC.

3. Turn on UL and DL power amplifiers, and check that any alarm indicator is active.

User Manual– Fiplex Compact Repeaters – Version 5.0 – July 2015 10

4. Setup desired operating gain using FCS. UL and DL chain are independent, so both values must be
set. To set DL band gain is recommended that AGC works around 3 - 6dB in each channel, in this way,
maximum output power is achieved and risk that coupled signal due to poor isolation between
antennas overload RF input is avoided.

To perform this action:

a) Check that cancellation is enabled. Otherwise, repeater can oscillate depending on isolation
between antennas.

b) It is strongly recommend increasing gain in 5dB steps (even smaller) until condition of AGC equal
to 3 - 6 dB is reached in downlink channels, and always keeping isolation indicators between
limits. Gain is limited to isolation plus 15dB

c) UL band usually is set to the same value than DL band. Check that isolation indications are in its
operating range (i.e. isolation > gain -15dB)

5. Set up squelch settings. Controls are independent in UL and DL bands. Typical values for UL are -
100dBm for squelch threshold. For DL, recommended value for squelch threshold is minimum level
received in any active channel minus 10dB.

6. Setup desired filter bandwidth, depending on presence of adjacent channels. In principle,

recommended bandwidth filter is the available wider filter due to its low delay, but if adjacent signal is
detected, narrow filters can be used. Spectrum analyzer of FCS can be used to know rejection to
undesired signals. It is recommend that adjacent channels output power be, at least, 10dBc lower than
useful carrier.

User Manual– Fiplex Compact Repeaters – Version 5.0 – July 2015 11

Next figure shows how integrated spectrum analyzer can help to select bandwidth filters:

7. In case of repeater with 3G Router, insert SIM card and configure 3G Router. In order to perform this
action, see section 7.2 about Remote Connection configuration.

Status Indicators

There is an indicator panel located at the front panel of the repeater. This led panel works as a status
monitor, in order indicate warning or alarms of repeater
There are four leds, first one the power ON indication led, labelled “PWR”.
A Second led, labelled “STS” summarizes warnings regarding critical operational conditions of the repeater.
Third and fourth led summarizes operational conditions for uplink “UL” and downlink “DL” chains.

Part 2 SOFTWARE

6. Introduction

Fiplex repeater can be fully configured and monitored in local and remote mode.
• Local mode:
o Local Web server
o USB port with Windows desktop application
• Remote mode:
o Web server through 3G Router
o SNMP Agent through 3G Router

In following section, each control mode (configuration / monitoring) are described.

7. Local / Remote Web Server

7.1. Local connection

Fiplex repeaters use an Ethernet module and 3G Router to give TCP/IP connectivity (webserver and SNMP
Agent). In local mode, user can connect directly a computer to the Ethernet module using the inside Ethernet
cable. For remote mode, the Ethernet cable placed in the repeater is plugged to the 3G Router to convert a
Local Area Network to WAN. Therefore, repeater can be reached from any IP location. Note that these two
modes cannot work simultaneously, because local connection implies disconnection between Ethernet
module and Router.

In order to access to web browser in local mode, default IP addresses of Ethernet module are detailed in the
next table:

IP Address 192.168.1.10
Network submask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.2

NOTE: in order to restore default IP address, push the button placed close to USB Connector
during 5 seconds.

Computer network adapter configuration needs to be set to same network submask and gateway. IP address
can take any value in this IP range (192.168.1.11, for instance). These addresses cannot be changed by
user.

7.2. Remote connection

Remote access through 3G Router, requires a SIM card to access 3G mobile network. Once SIM card is
inserted, user has to configure router with the login, password, APN related to the SIM Card.

3G Router is configured through its internal web server.

Router IP address 192.168.1.2

User Manual– Fiplex Compact Repeaters – Version 5.0 – July 2015 14

Connect an Ethernet cable directly to 3G Router and type this URL http://192.168.1.2 in a web browser, and
following webpage will be loaded:

Access to SIM configuration menu, clicking on “Setup” link on left side of webpage. This menu is protected by
password:

Login admin
Password admin

WAN Setup configuration page is shown in the next figure:

User Manual– Fiplex Compact Repeaters – Version 5.0 – July 2015 15

User only has to change “User Name”, “Password” and “APN” fields, and optionally edit “PIN” text field if SIM
has PIN authentication enabled. It is recommended to disable PIN authentication in SIM card, to avoid that
SIM will be blocked, in case of mistake during configuration.

Furthermore, since depending on SIM contract characteristics, many wireless providers can drop wireless
connections that have no traffic for a certain period of time, it is necessary to leave activated the ‘Keep Online
Detection’ feature of the modem with a period not longer than 60 seconds. Either the ‘Ping’ or ‘Route’
methods of detection can be chosen, but it is necessary to provide at least one ‘Detection Server IP’ address.
That server has to be online and accessible for this procedure to work. When the WAN IP address given to
the SIM is on a public network, any known reliable, public server can be used. If the WAN IP is on a private
network, then it is the responsibility of the user to provide that server. For instance, a host running the SNMP
manager can be used for that purpose, since its address has to be known to configure the SNMP agent in the
repeater.

The rest of setup data, has been factory pre-configured, therefore user has not to modify any text field.
Especially, logging and NAT configuration MUST NOT BE CHANGED, otherwise the host managing the
repeater supervision would not be able to pass through the router.

Configuration has to be saved clicking in “Save” and “Apply Changes” button at bottom side of webpage.

If router has correct 3G connection, correct WAN IP will be shown at right of webpage header, and “Online”
LED of router front panel will turn on.

Moreover, 3G quality connection can be checked with 3G Router internal webserver, in Status WAN
menu. This page shows connection status, input signal level from 3G Network, and IP address. Input level
higher than -90dBm is desirable to consider good quality connection. Next snapshot shows WAN status page

It is VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to use SIMs with FIXED IP address, since knowing that address in
advance, greatly eases remote supervision. Otherwise, IP address can be changed frequently by the mobile
operator.

User Manual– Fiplex Compact Repeaters – Version 5.0 – July 2015 16

Once router connection has been checked, user can disconnect Ethernet cable to the computer and
reconnect internal Ethernet cable from Ethernet module. After that, connection quality can still be read from
this page, but using port 8080 on the assigned WAN IP address.

7.3. Web pages description

Once the Ethernet module and 3G Router are properly configured, user can connect to the repeater, writing
IP address in URL toolbar of any web browser available in its computer. For local connection, default URL is
http://192.168.1.10. For remote connection, IP address will depend on SIM card and mobile operator, and it
can be known following previous section

First screen to appear is Authentication. Default login and password are:

Login admin
Password admin

Password can be changed by user, using menu described in next sections.

NOTE: in order to restore password and default IP address, push the button placed close to USB
Connector during 5 seconds.

After authentication, web browser will load the main page of Fiplex Repeater showing RF configuration and
monitoring parameters. In case of remote connection, and depending of quality of 3g mobile connection,
page loading process can take 1-2 minutes.

User Manual– Fiplex Compact Repeaters – Version 5.0 – July 2015 17

At left side of webpage, configuration menus are shown:
• Content

• Status: whole RF configuration and monitoring parameters are shown. These parameters are
described in the next section.

• Tag: user can set a tag to ease repeater identification. For modifying the TAG, write a new
value in text field and click over Apply Changes link

• IP: At this page, IP addresses of SNMP Managers are shown. User can set addresses of two
SNMP Managers (IP where SNMP agent will send TRAP information). To modify, click over
Apply Changes link after writing new values on text fields. Also router 3G IP address can be
viewed in this screen (if 3G router option is installed)

User Manual– Fiplex Compact Repeaters – Version 5.0 – July 2015 18

• Password: to modify webpage password, old password is required, and new password needs
to be written two times. After clicking on “Apply Changes” link, new authentication screen
appear, where user must write new password.

• Downlink Spectrum: this page shows estimation for downlink input and output spectrum.
Estimation for output spectrum takes into account RF input levels, and gain, bandwidth filters
and squelch options programmed by the user, and it can be a useful tool for users to know
how the undesired signals are rejected by the channel selective repeater. Available frequency
spans are 1,2,3,4 and 5MHz.

• Date and Time: page to modify real time clock. When the repeater is not powered, this clock
runs with a voltage supply provided by a 3V lithium battery, button type of 20mm (CR2032)
with 220mA·h. This suffices for at least half year. When the repeater is powered, no current is
drained from the battery. So, actual battery life will depend on repeater usage. For battery

User Manual– Fiplex Compact Repeaters – Version 5.0 – July 2015 19

replacement, please locate battery holder between USB and Ethernet connectors on main
board. Battery positive side is UP, i.e. on holder clip.

After clicking on “Apply Changes” link, next message will appear, warning the user that system
needs to be rebooted.

• Configuration
o Apply Changes: as it is said above, this link is used to load changes to the repeater,
in configuration, tag, IP, password and date and time menus. After any configuration
change, web page will show and icon that allows user to know if configuration has
been successfully applied:

o Reload Settings: clicking this link, repeater configuration data is refreshed.

• Version: shows hardware, firmware and software versions of repeater and serial number.

7.4. RF parameters description

“Status” menu shows whole RF configuration and monitoring data, that are distributed along the webpage.
The first frame called “CONTROL” is placed in top of webpage, showing general configuration of repeater.
Below this, some frames titled “CHANNEL 1”, “CHANNEL 2”... . There is one for each active channel, and
configuration and status information related to each channel can be viewed. Next figures show these frames:

User Manual– Fiplex Compact Repeaters – Version 5.0 – July 2015 20

9.1.3. Trap manager

In this section, information regarding trap notifications is described.

• alarmStateTable
o notificationID: table index
o trapSequenceNumber: auto-increment counter field contained in each trap. Table stores
the last counter value regarding each trap type.
o perceivedSeverity: abnormal conditions detected in the repeater are tagged as ‘critical’
while other conditions which are not necessarily a malfunction, are tagged as warning. A
‘cleared’ severity removes former notifications with the same identification.

User Manual– Fiplex Compact Repeaters – Version 5.0 – July 2015 31

o timeStamp: trap contains timestamp number. It is number of seconds elapsed since
01/01/1980 0:00:00h
o utcTimeDate: this field is a string containing time and date when alarm condition was
produced. It is based in real-time clock of Ethernet module
o trapDescription: trap description string associated with notificationID for readout
convenience.
o deviceSerialNr: trap contains repeater serial number
o deviceTag: trap contains repeater tag
o modemIpAddr: trap contains router WAN IP address, which is periodically recovered.
o trapDisabled: each trap type can be disabled (0: trap enabled, 1: trap disabled)
individually.

• trapCounter: actual value of auto-increment trap counter

• trapAllStateSet: severity condition of all notifications can be set at once with this control. Six
different values are possible: (0: indeterminate, 1: critical, 2: major, 3: minor, 4: warning, 5:
cleared) but Fiplex repeater only uses 0,1,4 and 5.
• trapAllDisableSet: (0: all trap types are enabled, 1 all trap type are disabled)
• trapAllRemove: if it is set to “1”, alarmStateTable is cleared and trapCounter is set to 0.
• heartBeatPeriod: Period in minutes between each heart-beat traps. If this field is set to 0, no
heartBeat traps are thrown.
• networkWatchdogPeriod: The network supervision system can reboot after this period (in minutes)
without receiving any HTTP or SNMP request, for ensuring network functionality. Only network
system reboots, while signal handling remains always operative. A value of 0 disables this network
reboot. Default value is 1440 minutes = 24hours

9.1.4. Trap notifications

System can send different type of traps, depending on status or alarm condition. All trap types are described
in the next table:

Table 4
Name Description
supervisionBoot System sends this trap after booting. Its severity is always ‘indeterminate’.
System sends this trap when shutdown occurs. Its severity is always
supervisionShutdown
‘indeterminate’.
Periodically system sends this trap. Period is set with heartBeatPeriod field
heartBeatTrap described above. When this traps is thrown, trap counter is not incremented.
It is always in cleared state
Systems with dynamic IP addresses, send a trap noticing that IP has
