Problem Sheet of Module 2

1. Determine the pressure difference between L and M as shown in the diagram.

2. A multi tube manometer using water and mercury is used to measure the pressure of
air in a vessel, as shown in the figure. For the given values of heights, calculate the
gauge pressure in the vessel h1=0.4m, h2=0.5m, h3=0.3m, h4=0.7m, h5=0.1m and
h6=0.5m.

3. An inclined tube manometer measures the gauge pressure Ps of a system S as shown

in figure. The reservoir and tube diameters of the manometer are 50mm and 5mm
respectively. The inclination angle of the tube is 30ᵒ. What will be the percentage
error in measuring Ps if the reservoir deflection is neglected.
4. Calculate total pressure and centre of pressure for the following objects as shown in
the figure.

5. A square plate is fixed to the opening of tank in such a way that one of its diagonal is
in vertical position which measures 2.4m. The upper position of plate is hinged and
the tank is filled with a liquid of SG 1.2. If the centre of plate is 1.8m below the free
surface, Calculate the thrust for and position of its COP.
6. The gate shown in the figure is 3m wide and for analysis can be considered massless.
For what depth of water will the rectangular gate be in equilibrium as shown?

7. The diagram shows a rectangular sluice gate AB, 3m wide and 4.5 m long hinged at
A. It is kept closed by a weight fixed to the gate. The total weight of the gate and
weight fixed to the gate is 515 kN. The centre of gravity of the weight and gate is at
G. Find the height of the water h which will first cause the gate to open.
8. The diagram shows a curved surface LM in water, IF the width is unity, calculate the
resultant force and its inclination with horizontal.

9. A circular cylinder of 1.8m diameter and 2.0m long is acted upon by water in a tank
as shown in figure. Determine horizontal and vertical components of hydrostatic force
on the cylinder.

10. A hot air balloon (approximated as a sphere of diameter 15 m) is to lift a basket of

load 2670N. To what temperature must be the air to be heated in order to achieve lift
off?
11. A solid cube of sides 0.5m each is made of a material of relative density 0.5. The cube
floats in a liquid of relative density 0.95 with two of its faces horizontal. Examine its
stability.
12. A cylindrical buoy is 2m in diameter and 2.5m long and weighs 22 kN. The specific
weight of sea water is 10.25 kN/m3. Show that the buoy does not float with its axis
vertical.
