The Lord requires His people to use their reason, and not lay it aside for impressions. His work will be intelligible
to all His children. His teaching will be such as will commend itself to the understanding of intelligent minds. It is
calculated to elevate the mind. God's power is not manifested upon every occasion. Man's necessity is God's
opportunity. . 1T 230.2

The personality of the Father and the Son, also the unity that exists between Them, are presented in the
seventeenth chapter of John, in the prayer of Christ for His disciples:
“Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on Me through their word; that they all may
be one; as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be one in Us: that the world may believe that
Thou hast sent Me.” John 17:20, 21.
The unity that exists between Christ and His disciples does not destroy the personality of either. They are one in
purpose, in mind, in character, but not in person. It is thus that God and Christ are one. . MH 421.7-MH 422.1
Let the brightest example the world has yet seen be your example, rather than the greatest and most learned
men of the age, who know not God, nor Jesus Christ whom he has sent. The Father and the Son alone are to be
exalted. . YI July 7, 1898, par. 2

control him as the head, nor to be trampled under his feet as an inferior, but to stand by his side as an equal, to
be loved and protected by him. A part of man, bone of his bone, and flesh of his flesh, she was his second self,
showing the close union and the affectionate attachment that should exist in this relation. “For no man ever yet

As we partake of the divine nature, hereditary and cultivated tendencies to wrong are cut away from the
character, and we are made a living power for good. Ever learning of the divine Teacher, daily partaking of His
nature, we cooperate with God in overcoming Satan's temptations. God works, and man works, that man may be
one with Christ as Christ is one with God. Then we sit together with Christ in heavenly places. The mind rests
with peace and assurance in Jesus. OFC 364.8

The Father wrought by His Son in the creation of all heavenly beings. “By Him were all things created, ... whether
they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him.”
Colossians 1:16. Angels are God's ministers, radiant with the light ever flowing from His presence and speeding
on rapid wing to execute His will. But the Son, the anointed of God, the “express image of His person,” “the
brightness of His glory,” “upholding all things by the word of His power,” holds supremacy over them all. Hebrews
1:3. “A glorious high throne from the beginning,” was the place of His sanctuary (Jeremiah 17:12); “a scepter of
righteousness,” the scepter of His kingdom. Hebrews 1:8. “Honor and majesty are before Him: strength and
beauty are in His sanctuary.” Psalm 96:6. Mercy and truth go before His face. Psalm 89:14. . PP 34.1-PP 34.2
The King of the universe summoned the heavenly hosts before Him, that in their presence He might set forth the
true position of His Son and show the relation He sustained to all created beings. The Son of God shared the
Father's throne, and the glory of the eternal, self-existent One encircled both. About the throne gathered the holy
angels, a vast, unnumbered throng—“ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands” (Revelation
5:11.), the most exalted angels, as ministers and subjects, rejoicing in the light that fell upon them from the
presence of the Deity. Before the assembled inhabitants of heaven the King declared that none but Christ, the
Only Begotten of God, could fully enter into His purposes, and to Him it was committed to execute the mighty
counsels of His will. The Son of God had wrought the Father's will in the creation of all the hosts of heaven; and
to Him, as well as to God, their homage and allegiance were due. Christ was still to exercise divine power, in the
creation of the earth and its inhabitants. But in all this He would not seek power or exaltation for Himself contrary
to God's plan, but would exalt the Father's glory and execute His purposes of beneficence and love. . PP 36.2
The great Creator assembled the heavenly host, that He might in the presence of all the angels confer special
honor upon His Son. The Son was seated on the throne with the Father, and the heavenly throng of holy angels
was gathered around them. The Father then made known that it was ordained by Himself that Christ, His Son,
should be equal with Himself; so that wherever was the presence of His Son, it was as His own presence. The
word of the Son was to be obeyed as readily as the word of the Father. His Son He had invested with authority to
command the heavenly host. Especially was His Son to work in union with Himself in the anticipated creation of
the earth and every living thing that should exist upon the earth. His Son would carry out His will and His
purposes but would do nothing of Himself alone. The Father's will would be fulfilled in Him. . SR 13.2 (The story

Every one who transgresses the laws of health will surely be visited with God's displeasure. Oh, how much of the

Christ volunteered to lay aside His royal robe and kingly crown, and come to this earth to show to human beings
what they may be in cooperation with God. He came to shine amidst the darkness, to dispel the darkness by the
brightness of His presence....
The Father and the Son in consultation decided that Christ must come to the world as a babe, and live the life
that human beings must live from childhood to manhood, bearing the trials that they must bear, and at the same
time living a sinless life, that men might see in Him an example of what they can become, and that He might
know by experience how to help them in their struggles with sin. He was tried as man is tried, tempted as man is
tempted. The life that He lived in this world, men can live, through His power and under His instruction.... . RC

No Destruction of Personality—Christ is one with the Father, but Christ and God are two distinct personages.
Read the prayer of Christ in the seventeenth chapter of John, and you will find this point clearly brought out. How
earnestly the Saviour prayed that His disciples might be one with Him as He is one with the Father. But the unity
that is to exist between Christ and His followers does not destroy the personality of either. They are to be one
with Him as He is one with the Father (The Review and Herald, June 1, 1905). . 5BC 1148.2

And in whatever way we make known the athe Son, we glorify God (Manuscript 16, 1890). . 7BC 979.4
God and Christ and the heavenly host were John's companions on the Isle of Patmos. 7BC 954.6
In the beginning the Father and the Son had rested upon the Sabbath after Their work of creation. DA 769.2
Heaven and earth will unite in praise, as “from one Sabbath to another” (Isaiah 66:23) the nations of the saved
shall bow in joyful worship to God and the Lamb. DA 769.2
We shall be judged according to the light we have had, according to the privileges we have been granted,
according to the opportunity we have had to hear and understand the word of God. These privileges have been
given us through an infinite cost to the Father and the Son. The plan of redemption has been devised and carried
out so far through the sacrifice of all heaven, and the gift of the Holy Spirit has been provided, that the divine may
unite with the human, and man be elevated in moral and spiritual worth.. YI June 15, 1893, par. 1
From eternity there was a complete unity between the Father and the Son. They were two, yet little short of being
identical; two in individuality, yet one in spirit, and heart, and character.. YI December 16, 1897, par. 5
And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.” “And he
went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them.” “And Jesus increased in wisdom and
stature, and in favor with God and man.” Let the brightest example the world has yet seen be your example,
rather than the greatest and most learned men of the age, who know not God, nor Jesus Christ whom he has
sent. The Father and the Son alone are to be exalted.. YI July 7, 1898, par. 2
Christ the Word, the Only Begotten of God, was one with the eternal Father,—one in nature, in character, and in
purpose,—the only being in all the universe that could enter into all the counsels and purposes of God. By Christ
the Father wrought in the creation of all heavenly beings. “By Him were all things created, that are in heaven, ...
whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers” (Colossians 1:16); and to Christ, equally with
the Father, all heaven gave allegiance. . GC 493.1
I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.” Y:22. The people of God
are privileged to hold open communion with the Father and the Son. “Now we see through a glass, darkly.” 1
Corinthians 13:12. We behold the image of God reflected, as in a mirror, in the works of nature and in His
dealings with men; but then we shall see Him face to face, without a dimming veil between. We shall stand in His
presence and behold the glory of His countenance. . GC 676.4
Having engaged in the work, the amazing work of our redemption, Christ determined in council with His Father to
spare nothing, however costly, to withhold nothing however highly it might be estimated, that would rescue the
poor sinner. He would give all heaven to this work of salvation, of restoring the moral image of God in man.... To
be a child of God is to be one with Christ in God, and to put forth our hands in earnest, self-sacrificing love to
strengthen and bless the souls that are perishing in their sins. OFC 34.1
Notwithstanding this special direction of God, some did go out to gather manna on the seventh day, but they
found none; and the Lord said unto Moses, “How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?” That
there might be no mistake in the matter, the Father and the Son descended upon Mount Sinai, and there the
precepts of His law were spoken in awful grandeur in the hearing of all Israel.—Manuscript 3, 1885. . CTr 109.6
Adam and Eve assured the angels that they should never transgress the express command of God, for it was
their highest pleasure to do His will. The angels united with Adam and Eve in holy strains of harmonious music,
and as their songs pealed forth from blissful Eden, Satan heard the sound of their strains of joyful adoration to the
Father and Son. And as Satan heard it his envy, hatred, and malignity increased, and he expressed his anxiety to
his followers to incite them (Adam and Eve) to disobedience and at once bring down the wrath of God upon them
and change their songs of praise to hatred and curses to their Maker (The Story of Redemption, 24-31). . LHU
20.7-LHU 20.8
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.... So God created man in his own image, in the
image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Genesis 1:26, 27.
After the earth was created, and the beasts upon it, the Father and Son carried out their purpose, which was
designed before the fall of Satan, to make man in their own image. They had wrought together in the creation of
the earth and every living thing upon it. And now God said to His Son, “Let us make man in our image.” 13 .
TMK 13.1-TMK 13.2
With what intense interest the whole universe watched the conflict that was to decide the position of Adam and
Eve. How attentively the angels listened to the words of Satan, the originator of sin, as he ... sought to make of
none effect the law of God through his deceptive reasoning! How anxiously they waited to see if the holy pair
would be deluded by the tempter, and yield to his arts! They asked themselves, Will the holy pair transfer their
faith and love from the Father and Son to Satan? Will they accept his falsehoods as truth? 17 . TMK 14.5
6. Mildest Test Given—With what intense interest the whole universe watched the conflict that was to decide the
position of Adam and Eve. How attentively the angels listened to the words of Satan, the originator of sin, as he
placed his own ideas above the commands of God, and sought to make of none effect the law of God through his
deceptive reasoning! How anxiously they waited to see if the holy pair would be deluded by the tempter, and yield
to his arts! They asked themselves, Will the holy pair transfer their faith and love from the Father and Son to
Satan? Will they accept his falsehoods as truth? They knew that they might refrain from taking the fruit, and obey
the positive injunction of God, or they might violate the express command of their Creator. . 1BC 1083.3
Even as Christ was in the world, so are His followers. They are the sons of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; and
the kingdom and dominion belong to them. The world understand not their character and holy calling; they
perceive not their adoption into the family of God. Their union and fellowship with the Father and Son is not
manifest, and while the world behold their humiliation and reproach, it does not appear what they are, or what
they shall be. They are strangers. The world know them not, and appreciate not the motives which actuate them.
—Testimonies for the Church 1:286. . WGD 79.4 (with God at dawn)
The inhabitants of all worlds will be convinced of the justice of the law in the overthrow of rebellion and the
eradication of sin.... The working out of the plan of salvation reveals not only to men but to angels, the character
of God, and through the ages of eternity the malignant character of sin will be understood by the cost to the
Father and the Son of the redemption of a rebel race. In Christ, the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world,
all worlds will behold the marks of the curse, and angels as well as men will ascribe honor and glory to the
Redeemer through whom they are all made secure from apostasy. . TA 296.1
The Father and the Son began the mighty, wonderful work they had planned—of creating the world. The earth
came forth from the hand of the Creator astonishingly beautiful. There were mountains and hills and plains,
interspersed with rivers and bodies of water. The earth was not one extensive plain, but the sameness of the
scenery was broken by hills and mountains, not high and ragged as they are now, but regular and beautiful in
shape. The bare, high rocks were never visible on them, but lay beneath the surface, like bones to the earth.
The waters were evenly dispersed. The hills, mountains, and very beautiful plains were adorned with plants and
flowers and tall, majestic trees of every description, which were many times larger and much more beautiful than
trees are today. The air was pure and healthful, and the earth seemed like a noble palace. Angels saw this and
rejoiced at the wonderful, beautiful works of God.
After they created the earth and the animals on it, the Father and Son carried out their intention, planned before
the fall of Satan, to make human beings in their own image. They had worked together in the creation of the earth
and every living thing upon it. And now God said to His Son, “Let us make man in our image.” SH 10-SH 10.3

If persons are as deserving of being separated from the church as Satan was of being cast out of heaven, they
will have sympathizers. There is always a class who are more influenced by individuals than they are by the Spirit
of God and sound principles; and, in their unconsecrated state, these are ever ready to take sides with the wrong
and give their pity and sympathy to the very ones who least deserve it. These sympathizers have a powerful
influence with others; things are seen in a perverted light, great harm is done, and many souls are ruined. Satan
in his rebellion took a third part of the angels. They turned from the Father and from His Son, and united with the
instigator of rebellion.. 3T 114.2

The hour for joyful, happy songs of praise to God and His dear Son had come. Satan had led the heavenly choir.

All self-exaltation and self-admiration are the result of ignorance of God and of Jesus Christ, whom He has sent.
How quickly will self-esteem die, and pride be humbled in the dust, when we view the matchless charms of the

1178.5
There is the throne, and around it the rainbow of promise. There are seraphim and cherubim. The angels circle
round Him, but Christ waves them back. He enters into the presence of His Father. He points to His triumph ...—
those raised with Him, the representatives of the captive dead who shall come forth from their graves when the
trump shall sound. He approaches the Father; and ... says: Father, it is finished. I have done thy will, O my God. I
have completed the work of redemption. If thy justice is satisfied, “I will that they also, whom thou hast given Me,
be with Me where I am.”—The Youth's Instructor, August 11, 1898.
The arms of the Father encircle the Son, and His voice is heard, saying, “Let all the angels worship Him.”—
Selected Messages 1:306.
The angelic throng ... bow in adoration before Him, saying, “Worthy, worthy, is the Lamb that was slain, and lives
again, a triumphant conqueror.”—The Signs of the Times, June 17, 1889.
When Christ passed within the heavenly gates, He was enthroned amidst the adoration of the angels. As soon as
this ceremony was completed, the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples in rich currents, and Christ was
indeed glorified, even with the glory which He had with the Father from all eternity. The Pentecostal outpouring
was Heaven's communication that the Redeemer's inauguration was accomplished. According to His promise He
had sent the Holy Spirit from heaven to His followers, as a token that He had, as Priest and King, received all
authority in heaven and on earth, and was the Anointed One over His people.—The Acts of the Apostles, 38. . TA

Is full obedience to God’s requirements possible?
Christ came to the earth, taking humanity and standing as man’s representative, to show in the controversy with
Satan that man, as God created him, connected with the Father and the Son, could obey every divine
requirement. Speaking through His servant He declares, “His commandments are not grievous.” It was sin that
separated man from his God, and it is sin that maintains this separation. . ST June 9, 1898, par. 6
Christ's Crucifixion
The Son of God was delivered to the people to be crucified.... They laid on Him the heavy cross ... but Jesus
fainted beneath the burden. They then seized ... a man who had not openly professed faith in Christ, yet believed
on Him. They laid on him the cross and he bore it to the fatal spot. Companies of angels were marshaled in the
air above the place.—Spiritual Gifts 1:57.
Who witnessed these scenes? The heavenly universe, God the Father, Satan and his angels.—The Bible Echo,
May 29, 1899. . TA 201-TA 201.6
All who will put away their sins by repentance toward God and faith in Christ are offered pardon. 13. CC 41.5
Jesus was free from all sin and error; there was not a trace of imperfection in His life or character. He maintained
spotless purity under circumstances the most trying. True, He declared, “There is none good but one, that is,
God;” but again, He said, “I and my Father are one.” [Matthew 19:17; John 3:16.] Jesus speaks of Himself, as
well as the Father, as God and claims for Himself perfect righteousness. . 16LtMs, Ms 141, 1901, par. 5
It is not essential for us to be able to define just what the Holy Spirit is. Christ tells us that the Spirit is the
Comforter, “the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father.” It is plainly declared regarding the Holy Spirit
that, in His work of guiding men into all truth, “He shall not speak of Himself.” John 15:26; 16:13. AA 51.3
The nature of the Holy Spirit is a mystery. Men cannot explain it, because the Lord has not revealed it to them.
Men having fanciful views may bring together passages of Scripture and put a human construction on them, but
the acceptance of these views will not strengthen the church. Regarding such mysteries, which are too deep for
human understanding, silience is golden. AA 52.1
We may have had a measure of the Spirit of God, but by prayer and faith we are continually to seek more of the
Spirit. LDE 187.3
The disciples did not ask for a blessing for themselves. They were weighted with the burden of souls. The gospel
was to be carried to the ends of the earth, and they claimed the endowment of power that Christ had promised.
Then it was that the Holy Spirit was poured out, and thousands were converted in a day. . CCh 98.5
1230. We are to keep advancing heavenward, developing a solid religious character. The measure of the Holy
Spirit we receive will be proportionate to the measure of our desire and faith exercised to get it, and the use we
shall make of the light and knowledge that shall be given us. We shall be entrusted with the Holy Spirit according
to our capacity to receive it and our ability to impart it to others.—The Review and Herald, May 5, 1896. . HL

God has given in His word sufficient evidence of its divine character. The great truths which concern our
redemption are clearly presented. By the aid of the Holy Spirit, which is promised to all who seek it in sincerity,
every man may understand these truths for himself. God has granted to men a strong foundation upon which to
rest their faith.
Yet the finite minds of men are inadequate fully to comprehend the plans and purposes of the Infinite One. We
can never by searching find out God. We must not attempt to lift with presumptuous hand the curtain behind
which He veils His majesty. The apostle exclaims: “How unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past
finding out!” Romans 11:33. We can so far comprehend His dealings with us, and the motives by which He is
actuated, that we may discern boundless love and mercy united to infinite power. Our Father in heaven orders
everything in wisdom and righteousness, and we are not to be dissatisfied and distrustful, but to bow in reverent
submission. He will reveal to us as much of His purposes as it is for our good to know, and beyond that we must
trust the Hand that is omnipotent, the Heart that is full of love.
While God has given ample evidence for faith, He will never remove all excuse for unbelief. All who look for
hooks to hang their doubts upon will find them. And those who refuse to accept and obey God's word until every
objection has been removed, and there is no longer an opportunity for doubt, will never come to the light.
Distrust of God is the natural outgrowth of the unrenewed heart, which is at enmity with Him. But faith is inspired
by the Holy Spirit, and it will flourish only as it is cherished. No man can become strong in faith without a
determined effort. Unbelief strengthens as it is encouraged; and if men, instead of dwelling upon the evidences
which God has given to sustain their faith, permit themselves to question and cavil, they will find their doubts
constantly becoming more confirmed. . GC 526.2-GC 527.3
