Electronic Circuit Design Lab Lab#08

Lab # 08
Frequency Response of a Common Source
Objective:
To analyze and plot the frequency response of a single stage common source amplifier.

Apparatus:
• MOSFET ( BS 170)
• Oscilloscope
• Power supply
• Resistors
• DMM
• Function generator
• Capacitors
• Wires

Common Source Amplifier:

The output voltage is produced across the resistor at the load in the drain terminal after the input
signal is applied at the gate terminal and source terminal. A common source amplifier is what
this is. In this case, the source serves as a connecting terminal for the input and output. It is also
referred to as a transconductance amplifier or a voltage amplifier. Depending on the input and
output impedances, it generates current gain and voltage gain. FETs are employed in these
circuits to provide high input impedances and voltage gain.

Common Source Amplifier Circuit

The circuit diagram of the common source amplifier with N-channel FET along with the
coupling and biasing capability is shown below. This circuit will be similar to the common-
emitter follower of Bipolar Junction transistor. If we use P-channel FET, the polarity of the input
voltage will be reversed.

Frequency Response:

The frequency response of this amplifier is the most important factor. The circuit designs of low
frequency and audio transistor circuits are different from RF applications. The capacitors and the
type of FET used in the operation may affect the frequency response of the amplifier.

The frequency response of this amplifier is limited. This is the main drawback. The amplified
output voltage can be applied to either a common-drain circuit (voltage follower) or a common-
gate circuit (current follower). To obtain better frequency response, common-drain and common-
gate circuits are combined to form a cascade amplifier circuit.

Graph:

Procedure:
• In the very first step we take all the components and arrange them on the circuit.
• In the next step we Connect the power supply and other components to the components
• Then we apply the frequency from function generator
• In the next step we increase the frequency and note all the values of output voltage.
• In the next step the gain should be calculated in Db
• In the last step we note the values and plot the graph

Conclusion:

Safety Precautions:
1. Use proper tool handling techniques and ensure that all tools are in good condition before
use.
2. Follow all lab safety rules and procedures, including those related to handling hazardous
materials, operating equipment, and disposing of waste.
3. Keep the lab clean and organized, and ensure that all chemicals and equipment are properly
labeled and stored.
