As of 2017, it is estimated that the world population is

about 7.6 billion.

World leaders, sociologists, and anthropologists are

interested in studying population, including its growth
Mathematics can be used to model population growth.
Recall the formula for exponential growth.
A = Pe rt
where :
A =size of population after it grows
P = initial number of people
r = rate of growth (in decimal)
t = time
e = Euler’s constant with an approximation value of 2.718

* The time “t” should coincide with the given rate.

If The time is in years, then the growth rate should also be a yearly growth rate
Substitute the given values in the formula
𝐴 = 𝑃𝑒 rt to find the missing quantity .

P =680,000
r = 12% peryear
t = 8 years
What is A?
P =680,000
r = 12% per year

What is A?
𝐴 = 𝑃𝑒 rt
𝐴 = 680,000𝑒 0.12( 8) 680,000e^(0.12x8)
𝐴 = 680,000𝑒 0.96
𝐴 = 1,775,953.602
𝐴 = 1,775,954
The exponential growth model 𝐴 = 30𝑒0.02tdescribes
the population of a city in the Philippines in thousands,
t years after 1995.
a. What was the population of the city in 1995?
b. What will be the population in 2017?
𝐴 = 30𝑒0.02tdescribes the population of a city in the
Philippines in thousands, t years after 1995.
a. What was the population of the city in 1995?
Since the population is in 1995, then we consider that t = 0
𝐴 = 30𝑒 0.02(0)
𝐴 = 30𝑒 (0)
𝐴 = 30( 1)
𝐴 = 30 s𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑖t 𝑖s 𝑖𝑛tℎ𝑜us𝑎𝑛𝑑s s𝑜, 30x1000 = 30,000
Therefore, the city population in 1995 was 30,000.
𝐴 = 30𝑒0.02tdescribes the population of a city in the
Philippines in thousands, t years after 1995.
b. What will be the population in 2017?
Since the population is in 1995, then we consider that t = 22
𝐴 = 30𝑒 0.02 22 30e^(0.02x22)
𝐴 = 30𝑒 0.44
𝐴 =30(1.55271)
𝐴 = 46.581216956 × 1000 = 46,581
Therefore, the city population in 2017 was 46,581.
