The step efforts count, meaning even their final results are wrong, we will give them points

for the right step

I will give you the flexibility of how to cut partical credits within each part

HW2: Review of Introductory Differential Equations and Linear Algebra

Problem #1: Linear ODEs 60 points with each part of 20 points

Find the general solution to the following linear ODEs:
a. y''  6y'  8y  40 sin 2x

b. x2 y''  0.4xy'  0.49y  0

e2 x
c. y''  4 y'  4 y 
x

Problem #2: Linear Algebra 40 points

 2 0 0 
Perform the following tasks on matrix A , where A   2 0 0  .
 0 0 2 

a. Compute the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of A . 15 points with each eigenvalue/eigenvector of 5'
1
b. Perform the operation D  M AM to determine matrix D , where M is the modal matrix
containing the basis vectors of A (the basis vectors are the linearly independent
eigenvectors). 10 points
1
c. Parts a and b should be done in detail via hand calculation, including the computation of M
and the matrix multiplications implied above. Now, for Part c, do the same computations
within Matlab to verify your hand calculations. Include the Matlab m-file and a hardcopy
listing of the output file generated by your program as documentation. Address any
differences you observe. 15 points

Documentation
Documentation for this assignment should include detailed analytical solutions to the problems
given (be sure to show all the steps) by hand-writting paper; a listing of any Matlab script and
function files generated, the resultant Matlab plots, and a brief description of the data and results
of your analyses as zip.file and upload through the blackboard. Please note that the material for
each problem should be well organized and contained in a separate sub-section of your HW
package. Be sure to keep each problem completely separate. An overall professional job is
expected on every HW!
