ORDINARY LEVEL

COMPUTER SCIENCE (PROJECT)

4021/04
NOVEMBER 2022
EXAMINER REPORT

Generally, quite a number of candidates performed fairly well. Some candidates submitted
presentable and neat projects with defined sections such as table of contents and page numbers as
expected by the guide.

However, some candidates had challenges on following the project guide. Some even used
Advanced Level Project guide to carry out their research which made it difficult for examiners to
award marks. Teacher and candidates are encouraged to download the correct project guide from
the ZIMSEC official website. Some candidates did not include a table of contents in their projects
hence making it difficult to locate different sections of the project.

Some candidates used spiral binding on their projects which made their projects presentable and
easy to work with.

In some projects, there were no individual assessment mark sheets which indicate teacher’s marks.
Each project should contain an individual assessment mark sheet as well as project assessment
form. The individual assessment mark sheet is used by examiners to record the final mark for each
candidate.
SECTION A
SELECTION, INVESTIGATION AND ANALYSIS
The project guide requires candidates to specify the name of the system. Some candidates could
not come up with meaningful names of their systems relating to the intended solution to the chosen
problem. Most candidates were able to specify the population size as required by the guide.
However, most candidates did not clarify when the problem started, instead they stated when the
organization or company started.

Investigation of the current system

This section was done well by most candidates. They used the required research instruments which
are questionnaires, interviews, record inspection and observation. Few candidates on this section
did not provide filled in questionnaires, sample interviews, observation reports and copies of
existing paperwork or record inspection reports which show research has been carried out. Some
candidates provided questionnaires without responses and interview questions without responses
which resulted in candidates not scoring the 2 marks allocated to this section.

Broad description of the current system

Some candidates were following Advanced level project guide on this section. They used data
flow diagrams and entity relationship diagrams to describe their systems which is not required by
the Ordinary level project guide line. Candidates on this section are expected to describe the inputs,
processes, outputs and storage used by the existing system.
Evaluation, requirements, aims and objectives were properly done by most candidates.

SECTION B
Design
Most candidates were able to give at least two alternatives to the existing system and provide
justification to the alternative they have chosen. However, some candidates faced challenges on
input-output design. The most common response was using programming languages like Visual
Basic and MS Access to design input and output forms which was not appropriate at the design
stage. Candidates are expected to design data capture forms and output design using a drawing
software or any application program such as a Word processor, Spreadsheet or even a hand drawn
design. Although candidates mentioned different test plans, they used the textbook approach
therefore they could not link their test plan to their systems.
SECTION C
System Development
Very few candidates achieved marks on this section. Most candidates produced flowcharts for
minor modules like login. The section requires candidates to produce flow charts, pseudo codes
and codes for major modules. Candidates are not awarded marks for login modules.

SECTION D
Testing and Evaluation
Most candidates were able to test for standard, extreme and abnormal data. Error messages were
displayed to show abnormal data. Candidates spelt out achievements, failures and opportunities
for future developments. However, some candidates failed to link their achievements and failures
with their objectives. Learners ended up giving achievements and failures which were not in line
with their systems.

RECOMMENDATIONS

 Subject teachers should mark the projects and provide individual assessment mark sheets
for all candidates
 Candidates should be encouraged to do spiral binding on their projects as per project guide
requirements
 Candidates should follow the Ordinary level project guide.
 Candidates are advised to document every activity undertaken as they carry out the project.
 Teachers should provide ongoing support, guidance and supervision while candidates carry
out the project.
