Motivation 1: The students are ask to do the following activity with their group.
Materials:
 customize Cartesian plane on a ¼ manila paper
 ruler
 pilot pen
Procedure
1. Draw a coordinate plane on a ¼ manila paper and draw a parabola
2. In the graph of parabola created, identify the center, focus, vertex, and directrix by giving its ordered pairs.
3. Choose a representative to explain your output in the class.

Motivation 2: The students are ask to identify the parts of the given conic section.

Guide Questions:
1. What conic section is being shown in the picture?
2. What are the different parts of the conic section given?

Motivation

Motivation 3: The students are ask to do the following activity with their group.
Materials:
 ¼ manila paper
 ruler
 pilot pen
 pencil
Procedure
1. Think of an object that resembles paraboloids or parabolas or simply think of an example of parabola that you can see in real life.
2. Draw it on a ¼ manila paper
3. Label the vertex and the approximate location of the focus, then draw a line for the axis of symmetry.
Guide Questions:
1. What are the important features or parts of a parabola?
2. What is the standard form of the equation of a parabola that opens upward? How about a parabola that opens downward?
3. What are some of the other real-life applications of parabolas?
The teacher will provide wide range of understanding of the following lessons by providing variety of activities:

Instruction Day 1: Definition and Equation of a Parabola
