School Beliefs about Literacy and the Role and Purpose of Literacy Instruction

Nadres and Virtucio Elementary School holds fundamental beliefs about literacy and the pivotal role
of literacy instruction in shaping the futures of its learners. The school aims to cultivate lifelong
learners who are empowered, empathetic, and equipped to make meaningful contributions to society.

Key approaches / strategies to adopt

To effectively implement the model of literacy instruction described for Nadres and Virtucio
Elementary School, several key approaches and strategies can be adopted. Here are some approaches
aligned with the beliefs and purposes of literacy instruction:

1. Integrated Literacy Across Subjects -Implement a curriculum that integrates literacy instruction
seamlessly across all subject areas. Encourage teachers to incorporate reading, writing, speaking, and
listening activities into lessons in mathematics, science, social studies, and other disciplines.

2. Differentiated Instruction- Recognize and address the diverse learning needs and abilities of
students by implementing differentiated instruction strategies. Provide various instructional
approaches, materials, and assessments to accommodate different learning styles, levels of readiness,
and interests.

3. Explicit Instruction- Provide explicit instruction in foundational literacy skills, such as phonics,
fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies. Model and scaffold these skills through guided
practice and feedback to support students' development as proficient readers and writers.

4. Technology Integration- Incorporate technology as a tool to enhance literacy instruction and

provide access to diverse resources and digital texts. Use educational software, multimedia tools,
digital libraries, and online platforms to support reading, writing, research, and communication skills
development.

5. Family and Community Engagement- Involve families and communities as partners in literacy
instruction by providing resources, workshops, and opportunities for family involvement. Foster
home-school partnerships that support literacy development and encourage families to reinforce
literacy skills and habits at home.
