Remarks on Problem Set 5

Math201B: Winter 2011

1. Let Td = T × T × · · · × T denote the d-dimensional Torus. For s > 0, let

H s (Td ) denote the space of functions f ∈ L2 (Td ) such that
X 2
1 + |n|2s fˆ(n)

< ∞.
n∈Zd

Prove that if s > d/2 and f ∈ H s (Td ), then f ∈ C(Td ).

Remarks.

• Roughly speaking, this result means that the existence of more that
one-half a weak L2 -derivative per space dimension implies that the
function is continuous.

• Analogous Sobolev embedding theorems hold for Lp -derivatives, in

which case at least k > d/p weak Lp derivatives (more than 1/p deriva-
tives per space dimension) are required to imply continuity. When
p 6= 2, however, a proof using Fourier analysis is not straightforward.

2. Suppose that f ∈ L1 (T) is weakly differentiable and its weak derivative

f 0 = 0 is zero. Prove that f = constant (up to pointwise a.e. equivalence).

Remarks.

• The same result, with essentially the same proof, holds for distribu-
tions: If T ∈ D0 (T) has zero distributional derivative, then T is con-
stant.

3. Define the principal-value functional T : D(T) → C by
Z x
hT, φi = p.v. cot φ(x) dx
T 2
Z − Z π x
= lim + cot φ(x) dx.
→0+ −π 2

(a) Show that T ∈ D0 (T) is a well-defined periodic distribution.

(b) Compute the Fourier coefficients T̂ (n) of T .

Remarks.

• The principal value distribution

1 x 1 X
p.v. cot = (−i sgn n) einx
π 2 2π
n∈Z

is the kernel of the periodic Hilbert transform

H : L2 (T) → L2 (T)

defined by the convolution

x−y
Z
1
Hf (x) = p.v. cot f (y) dy.
π T 2

The Fourier expression is

[)(n) = −i sgn nfˆ(n)

(Hf

i.e. multiplication by −i sgn n. The Hilbert transform is a unitary map on

the space of periodic L2 -functions with zero mean, and is a basic example
of a singular integral operator.

2
4. (a) If T ∈ D0 (T) is a periodic distribution, show that there exists an
integer k ≥ 0 and a constant C such that

|hT, φi| ≤ C kφkC k for all φ ∈ D(T) (1)

where
k
X
kφkC k = sup φ(j) (x)
j=0 x∈T

denotes the C k -norm of φ.

Remarks.

• This result depends on the compactness of T. An example of a distri-

bution T ∈ D0 (R) that does not have finite order is given by

X
T = δ (n) (x − n),
n=1

meaning that T is a sum of derivatives of δ-functions whose order

increases as their support moves further away from the origin.
