BREIF ABOUT HARIOM EPOXY SHIELD REINFORCEMENT BARS:
HARIOM GROUP is working on its ore to core principle in its full integrated plant
where manufacturing of the Epoxy steel from steel melting to packaging of Epoxy
Coated Reinforcement bars all are done under one roof.
So, within a short span of time, the epoxy bars can be delivered against any or
displaced by the client, which obviously save their time and money. It also hastens
the construction work avoiding unnecessary delay at the work site too.
Corrosion can severely reduce the strength and life of structures ….. Ordinary steel
always prone to get corroded as and when it contacts with water. So, the FBE
coated Reinforcement bars are always recommended using in every construction
since they are more durable and their life span is four times more than that of an
ordinary bar.
Finally, FBE – Fusion Bonded Epoxy Shield Coating – A new scientific
formula & Technology from USA was introduced for the first time in
India by HARIOM GROUP.
FBE – Fusion coating Epoxy Coating is the new answer to the threat of looms over
many buildings and skyscrapers. Because, the answer should and it belong lasting
has to survive the test of the time.
When properly catalyzed and applied, epoxies produce a hard, chemical and
solvent resistant finish. They are typically used on concrete and steel to give
resistance to water, alkali and acids.
FBE coating has got many advantages. Since the coating is done on the fully
Automatic coating line, better quality control is achieved and it retains a uniform
coating thickness. Due to its adhesive properties it also helps maintain a good
bonding of coating with the steel because of flexibility, the coating does not get
damaged when the straight bar is bent during fabrication on a special mandrel.
FBE acts as an insulator for electro chemical cells and offer a strong barrier
protection to steel which prevents chloride ions pass through it.
There are four long tedious processing in the coating:
1. Surface preparation
2. Heating
3. Powder application
4. Cooling
1. Surface preparation is done by shot & grits blasting on bars. Impurities are
removed from the surface through surface preparation. Reinforcing steel is that, it
is blast – cleaned to a near white glowing metal finish using abrasives in shot
blaster. The shots clean the surface of the bar and grits provide an anchor (100 –
300 microns) to the bar surface.
2. The steel rebar pass through an induction coil for preheating. And flash heating
is done by using proper care. Temperature of the rebar rangers between 230°C to
250°C.
3. As powder leaves the gun, and electrical charge is imparted to the epoxy
powder particles. These electrically charged particles are attached to the grounded
steel surface providing a uniform coverage of the coating. When the dry powder
touches the hot steel, it melts, flows, and quickly gels as a film (100 – 300 microns
thick) on the reinforcing bars and on deformations while the residual heat cures
the coating.
4. For cooling of bars, the coated bars, after curing, are passed through a cooling
tunnel, where water is sprayed on to the bars to cool them. The bars are then
kicked off on to the final inspection rack for testing and inspection.
In the well equipped Lab, The testing on coated bars is carried out as per American
standard 775 and Bureau of Indian Standards specification requirements.
The acceptance test usually conducted is thickness measurements, flexibility test
and holiday test. Once inspected, they are bundled. Strait from the epoxy coating
line, a multi-layer poly-packing wrapping is done with an automated.
Besides all these, along with the epoxy coated bars the company also provides
after sales service solution. A FREE kit with paint brush & wire brush with epoxy
patch up compound to mend any scratches while cutting / welding & PVC coated
binding wire for binding of coated reinforcement bars at the construction site. This
is an extra post-delivery care given by the company for its valuable clients to
prevent & repair damages on the coated steel surface due to negligence.
Our product has been widely accepted in the market and is being used for
construction of Bridges, Dams, Barrages, Canals, under water construction,
Tunnels, Hydro Electric structure, Roads, Flyovers, Power plants, Cement,
Automobiles, Factories & Domestic Buildings etc.

MANUFACTURING PROCESS
After the complete melting of charge, the hot liquid metal samples are taken to analyze the chemical
ingredients present, i.e. carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorous, sulphur etc. In order to balance
chemistry of the metal as per required grade silicon, manganese and Ferro silicon is added. The
temperature of liquid metal is raised upto 1680 degree centigrade for casting.
Charging
Charging is the process by which raw materials such as following. Pig Iron and Processed Iron Ore,
Met coke are fed into the furnace. Exposure to toxic metal fumes, carbon monoxide, heat stress, and
other toxic gases are the main hazards associated with furnace charging.
Melting
Melting is the process by which the charge material is melted by giving suitable Electrical power in
Induction Furnace.
Removal of slag
This is the process by which unwanted debris is removed from the molten metal. This process is
carried out manually as per requirements in floor time to time.
Refining
Refining is the process in which required alloying additions are done and undesirable impurities are
removed from the steel through various oxidation treatments & ferro alloys killing.
Tapping
Tapping is the process of transferring the molten metal into a ladle from the furnace at required
Temperatures for casting.
After Ladle Set on the CCM Stand Ladle Slide Gate Opened through Hydraulic Force & Molten Metal
Poured into the Tundish. After Tundish Level gained for billet casting then Tundish Nozzle Opened for
Continuous Casting of Billets & molten Metal started pouring in Copper Mould Tube . With the Help Of
Oscillation Process Hot Billet Starts coming out from Copper mould Tube through Machine Radius
cooled with pressure water Jets towards withdrawal strands. After that Billet goes through automatic
Shearing Cutting of Hot Billets and shipped to Rolling Mill with high Speed Conveyors for Rolling Of
TMT Bars to Rolling Mill Division.
1.1 PROCESS OF MANUFACTURING HSD/QST BARS
100 mm square M. S. Billets we receive from Continuous Casting Machine which is Directly Hot
Charged to our Rolling Mill as per our required Rolling Size sheared by Hot Shearing Machine
automatically with fully computerized PLC Unit and it is directly Rolled to TMT Bars as per Size
and Quality.
In our 16” Roughing Mill there are 4 stands driven with the help of 1250 HP motor, flywheel,
reduction gear, and pinion into several passes to achieve intermediate and finishing mill size. The
Cutting/Shaping of Grooves/Passes in Rolls being taken care by experienced Foreman/Engineers In
charge of the Rolling Operations. The material feeded into the first pass of the roughing mill travels
via various Intermediate Stands and to the finishing stands in between the front and the back end
(split ends ) of the material Sheared by the help of Alligator type shearing machine. The forth stand
of Roughing Mill is exclusively for Finishing Pass of Dia 25, 28 and 32 mm only. The hot material
moves through various passes in oval-square series in the rolling mill.
From the third stand of roughing mill material moves to the first stand of intermediate mill. From
first stand it goes to second, third, fourth stand. Which is the finishing stand for 16 & 20, mm dia
from the last stand of intermediate mill material passes through the first finishing mill which is the
finishing stand of 12 mm dia. HSD/QST Bars. From the second stand of first finishing mill there
are four continuous stands from where the 8 mm and 10 mm dia. HSD/QST Bars gets finished.
Hot Rolls bars from the finishing stands of rolling mill passes through the Ra TMT system where
the bars gets quenched by water under controlled pressure. The temperature of Bars at the entry
point to Ra TMT system is 950 to 1000 °C and after passing through the cooling pipes of the Ra
TMT system the temperature of Bars is reduced to 580 to 620’C to get desired grade of Fe-500. At
cooling bed bars having temperature of 580 to 630’C get natural thermal exchange of temperature
as the inner core of bar which remain hot expends temperature towards the outer surface of bars and
extra hardened surface of bars get normalize and a hardened tempered surface of marten site at
periphery and the fine grain ferrite perlite structure in the central zone forms. The cooling pipes of
Ra TMT system gets cooled water from cooling tower via cold water pumps the quantity and
pressure of water entering through the pipe is control as per the size being rolled of different grades
such as Fe-500.
1.2.5 PHYSICAL TESTING OF HSD/QST BARS.
After the Ra TMT process every 20 minutes taken a sample of bars checked the section weight As
per IS: 1786 then physical tests done at UTM for Yield stress, Ultimate load & Elongation % of Bar
sample as per IS: 1786 all tested done at our fully computerized laboratory by Experienced Quality
Control Engineers & Chemists.
Bars after getting thermo Mechanical Treatment reaches to the cooling bed where is being cooled by
natural cooling upto handling condition and cut to the required length of 12 Meters and bundling of
bars done and stacked in a lot or batch for commercial Sales.
The finished material marked with tag containing the details of marking like lot No. / Size / etc. after
complete mechanical / Physical testing etc.

4.0 MANUFACTURING PROCESS FOR FBE COATINGS DIVISION
I. SCOPE OF PROCEDURE
The procedure is based on the assumption that the principal contractor named in this job shall
provide material for coating after their certification for the quality of the reinforcement steel
bar with respect to relevant project specifications and / or IS-1786:1985.
This procedure defines production method used by HARIOM EPOXY SHIELD for FBE
coating of rebars at BHILAI EPOXY COATING DIVISION. This procedure is a part of ECL
Quality Control Programme.
II.1 The coating material shall meet the requirement of specification as per Annexure-A of IS –
13620:1993.
II.2 The patching/repairing material shall be compatible with the coating while in use in coating
plant or in the field. The patching or repair shall be performed in accordance with ECL
recommendations.
All Steel to be used shall be high yield strength deformed bars conforming to IS – 1786:1985
unless otherwise specifically approved by inspection agency / Client. All reinforcement shall
be coated with fusion bonded epoxy powder. Coating of bars, testing, handling etc. shall be
done as per IS- 13620:1993/ASTM 775M. The bare bars received shall be checked for bar
dia., weight & surface defects.
III.1.1 Random checks shall be made on the rebar supplied for coating and in case of any problems
noticed shall be intimated to the principal contractor.
(Format attached as per BARE BAR INSPECTION REPORT)
The surface of the steel, reinforcing bars to be coated shall be cleaned by impact of steel
shots/Grits during shot blasting operation. The blasted surface should visually look to be near
white metal and may meet the requirement of SA 21/2 of Swedish Standard SIS-055900.
