Find the mean x̅.

x̅ = sum of all values in the sample / number of values in the sample

x̅ = ((1x2) + (2x5) + (3x8) + (4x12) + (5x12) + (6x0) +(7x1)) / (2+5+8+12+12+0+1)
x̅ = (2 + 10 + 24 + 48 + 60 + 0 + 7) / 40
x̅ = 151 / 40
x̅ = 3.775
Find the samples standard deviation, s.
The samples standard deviation, s = the square root of the variance.
Data Frequency Deviation Deviation^2 Fred x Deviation^2
1 2 1 – 3.775 = - 2.775 (-2.775)^2 = 7.700625 2 x 7.700625 = 15.4012
2 5 2 – 3.775 = -1.775 (-1.775)^2 = 3.150625 5 x 3.150625 = 15.7531
3 8 3 – 3.775 = -0.775 (-0.775)^2 = 0.600625 8 x 0.600625 = 4.805
4 12 4 – 3.775 = 0.225 (0.225)^2 = 0.050625 12 x 0.050625 = 0.6075
5 12 5 – 3.775 = 1.225 (1.225)^2 = 1.500625 12 x 1.500625 = 18.007
6 0 6 – 3.775 = 2.225 2.225 (2.225)^2 = 4.950625 0 x 4.950625 = 0
7 1 7 – 3.775 = 3.225 3.225 (3.225)^2 = 10.400625 1 x 10.400625 = 10.400
Total = 64.975
The sample variance, s2 is equal to the sum of the last column (64.975) divided by the total
number of values in the sample minus one (40 - 1):
s^2 = 64.975 / (40 - 1) = 1.666025641
The sample standard deviation, s is equal to the square root of the sample variance:
s = 1.2907461567
Therefore, the sample standard deviation, s is 1.2907461567
Complete the Relative Frequency column and the Cumulative Relative Frequency Column.
X Frequency Relative Frequency Cummulative Relative
1 2 2/40 = 0.05 0.05
2 5 5/40 = 0.125 0.05 + 0.125 = 0.175
3 8 8/40 = 0.2 0.175 + 0.2 = 0.375
4 12 12/40 = 0.3 0.375 + 0.3 = 0.675
5 12 12/40 = 0.3 0.675 + 0.3 = 0.975
6 0 0 0.975 + 0 = 0.975
7 1 1/40 = 0.025 0.975 + 0.025 = 1
Find the first quartile.
The first quartile = middle value of the lower half of the data
= (tenth value + eleventh value) / 2
The first quartile = (3 + 3) / 2 = 6/2 = 3

Therefore, the first quartile = 3

Find the median.

The median = (twentieth value + twenty first value) / 2 = (4 + 4) / 2 = 8/2 = 4.
Therefore, the median = 4.
Find the third quartile.
The third quartile = middle value of the upper half of the data = (thirtieth value + thirty first
value) / 2

The third quartile = (5 + 5) / 2 = 10/2 = 5

What percent of students owned at least five pairs?
By looking at the cumulative relative frequency column, it’s 97.5% of students owned a least
five pairs.
Find the 40th percentile.
Let k = the kth percentile, i = index and n = total number of data
i = (k (n + 1)) / 100 = (40 (40 + 1)) / 100 = 16.4
Since i (16.4) is not an integer, we need to round it up and round it down to the nearest integer.
The 40th percentile is the average of the two data values in those two positions.
Therefore, the 40th percentile = (4 + 4)/2 = 4
Find the 90th percentile.
By using the same formula as the 40th percentile, i = 90(40+1) / 100 = 36.1
Therefore, the 40th percentile = (5 + 5) / 2 = 5
